Chili Peppers to Showtime -- You Stole Our Name!

The Red Hot Chili Peppers filed suit today against Showtime Networks over a new show called "Californication." In 1999, the band released a hit album with the same name. That album was named one of Rolling Stone's Top 500 Albums of All Time.

The suit, filed today in Los Angeles Superior Court, alleges Showtime and others violated federal trademark law. In the court documents, the band says the song "Californication" and the album achieved "extraordinary critical and commercial recognition," and according to a statement by lead singer Anthony Kiedis, "'Californication' is the signature CD, video and song of the band's career. For some TV show to come along and steal our identity is not right."

Band members want the show to stop using the name and to turn over any profits it made.

A rep for Showtime could not immediately be reached for comment.

61. I was surprised when i heard the name of the show, and thought it was a lawsuit waiting to happen. It's a great twist on words, and certainly should be considered the band's 'property'. I hope they win everything they ask.

62. The annoying thing is that the RHCP seem to think the shows sucess is based completely on the title. No show makes money and keeps viewers because of a great title.
Get over yourselves guys, you didn't even create anything new with the term, it's been around longer than the Chili Peppers .

63. i love it how they waited until that show got enough exposure in order to sue, although we all know that they were aware of the show since it most likely began. i've never been a fan of them and now they're just another washed up band trying to make money off of a show. pathetic.

65. The peppers sucked then and they suck now. They are dead in the music world. I personally dont care about this show but I am tired of dead musicians and actors trying to get back in the limelight by suing people. Just fade away and be gone, please oh please!!!

68. There Ass Holes. That band is so over that there just trying to get there name out in the Press again. The Showtime show has been out for a long time now, and it took the Chilli Peppers this long to sue. They should get a life.
