Dennis Quaid's Newborn Twins in Medical Nightmare

TMZ has learned that Dennis Quaid's newborn twins are fighting for their lives after being inadvertently overdosed at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles.

Sources tell us the twins -- Thomas Boone and Zoe Grace -- were accidentally given a massive dose of Heparin, an anti-coagulant. Babies typically get 10 units. Our sources say they were each mistakenly given 10,000 units. The drug is used to flush out IV lines and prevent blood clots. We're told one dose was given on Sunday morning, another on Sunday evening.

We're told late Sunday night, both babies started to "bleed out." Both babies are now at Cedars in the neo-natal intensive care unit where we're told they are stable.

The twins were born to Quaid and wife Kimberly Buffington November 8 via surrogate.

A rep for Quaid did not immediately return our call for comment and there was no immediate comment from Cedars.

We're told a technician stored the Heparin in the wrong place, and when a nurse grabbed the medicine for the babies without looking -- it was the wrong dosage.

A source says the babies are now being given Protamine, which reverses the effects of Heparin.

UPDATE: We're told as many as thirteen patients at Cedars were mistakenly given the overdose of Heparin, but the effects are more critical because of the age and weight of the twins.

68. I hope every one of those nurses are fired on the spot...especially the neonatal ones! It's unexcusable for any nurse to administer any medication to anyone without looking at the damn bottle! 13 nurses gave 13 overdoses to 13 patients because they didn't even bother t look at the label on the bottle of the medication they were drawing up. And to think people don't belive me when I say that the new nurses that are graduating from school now a days have no common sense!

69. This kind of error is FREQUANTLY made due to the Medico Psycho babble and abbreviations used, in treating patients. The differance between MG and MCG is THOUSANDS of miligrams, and a little blink of an eyes, can start some poor unsuspecting patient to the road of misery, or even, death. I grieve for Dennis' babies and pray, that this can be reversed, without damage to those little innocents. I think it time that simple ENGLISH be used, to treat people, not this abbreviated nonsense that OFTEN, places people in HARMS way...FIRST, DO NO HARM......

72. What a tragedy! May God shine his light and love on these two precious babies.

There are strict protocols for administering medication. Not checking and double checking is a gross negligence on the nurses part. There should be no excuse for this!!

In light of this tragedy - Please lets not forget that there are a lot of professional and caring nurses if you ever get hospitalized, they are the ones that will be responsible for your care.

73. This is absolutely so sad and should never had happened. I am SO ANGRY at this nurse. I know people make mistakes but I, myself, am an RN and there are steps to med-dispensing and this nurse obviously didn't do them. They are: Check patient's name, Check med, Check dose and then recheck 3 Times prior to administering med. She should LOOSE her license and I hope she is haunted by this incident for the rest of her life! My prayers go to those babies and their parents and family.

74. Comment number 70 by Jennifer Bush:

You stupid moron. "That's what he gets for cheating on meg Ryan!" You can't be serious. You think that innocent little babies should die because their father made a mistake? I will pray for your soul and that something so tragic never happens to you or your loved ones even though you are Satan's spawn.
