Oprah: "No Reason" to Check Out Adams -- Really?

After nearly two weeks of radio silence, Oprah Winfrey has finally responded to TMZ's numerous requests for comment on Dr. Jan Adams and why she promoted him on her show when he is not board certified in plastic surgery.

Adams was featured on the Oprah show in 2003 with other cosmetic surgeons. In just a few hours of investigating, TMZ found DUIs and malpractice suits -- among other things. How could Oprah have missed it -- and not known or cared that Dr. Adams was not a board-certified plastic surgeon?

A rep for Oprah tells TMZ, "Dr. Jan Adams appeared as a guest on the 'Oprah' show just once, in 2003, as the host of the Discovery Health Channel series, 'Plastic Surgery: Before and After.' The show he appeared on focused on various television series that highlighted trends in cosmetic surgery. Since he was booked as a guest commentator on the subject of medical television, not in his capacity as a surgeon, and since we did not promote him as a cosmetic surgeon, there was no reason to do a background check on him. We have removed all references to him from our website."

Dr. Adams: Click to watchBut on the show, an audience member says she's interested in getting several procedures done. Oprah, who is sitting next to Dr. Adams, says, "Let me see if I can hook you up." Oprah then leans into Dr. Adams and says, "We may know somebody."

Dr. Adams performed several cosmetic procedures on Kanye West's mother the day before she died. He told TMZ that he "did nothing wrong."

61. Maybe he took Oprah's advice about The Secret and he just wished he was a plastic surgeon. According to The Secret, which Oprah recommended to everyone and did a special on it, you just have to order things in your mind from the universe and if you really, really believe in it, no matter what it is, it will come true for you. Maybe he took her seriously and made his magic Secret wish. Maybe he should sue Oprah now that he has finally realized that he isn't a real plastic surgeon. Damn that Secret book!

62. As much as I like Oprah, I have to side with TMZ. Oprah has WORLDWIDE appeal and power. What did uncle Ben say to Peter Parker? "With great power, comes great responsibility." I think Oprah needs to remember that and the amount of influence she has over the public.

63. #53, I am sure you think you are a rational and reasonable person, perhaps even not a racist. I guess it is simply irony that you posted after #52 (Go back to Africa!). Anyway, I am curious as to whom the whites in the U.S. are a minority? Last I heard, Causasian Americans were the plurality, i.e., there is no more populous ethnic/racial group in the U.S. Of course, if you think it is white people v. everyone else (blacks, Hispanic, Asian-Americans, Native Americans, etc. -- you know every other non-white group), then I guess whites are the "minority." WHITE POWER! BTW, maybe it's time to look up the difference between "loose" and "lose."

As for many other posters suggesting that Oprah has a bias towards anything black, perhaps you should do a quick internet search of certain rappers' beef with Oprah because she doesn't/hasn't regularly brought very famous black rappers on to her show. Oprah seems to have gone out of her way not to curry favor with only African-Americans ... or maybe I missed the all-black Favorite Things audiences.

64. No one should have plastic surgery by someone who is not a board certified plastic surgeon. We have a lot of glorified ENT doctors and general surgeons trying to make extra money by performing cosmetic surgery which they call plastic surgery for which they really aren't qualified. I had an ENT tell me he was a board certified plastic surgeon (over 20 years ago when there were no resources to check these things out) and he claimed he would make my nose look better when he fixed my deviates septum. Well, he made it look so much worse - it was horrible. He shouldn't even be taking out tonsils! Patients beware!

67. Oprah needs to be taken down a few notches, she is not the QUEEN of all, she thinks she is.

Her popularity has decreased tremendously lately, because people are finally seeing who she really is.
I bet in the coming months you will see her ratings drop even MORE.Its about time people. see her for what she is.Stedman did.
Especially now that she is on the Campaign trail....Gee let me guess ???????who will she campaign for??????????

68. I think that this is certaintly being over dramatised. Oprah did not say that Dr.Adams could and would perform the surgery. Oprah simply stated that "Let me see if I can hook you up" and "We may know somebody" . Without seeing the whole show we can not insinuate that she was referring to Dr. Adams. As far as Dr. Adams recod goes, it speaks for itself. He has been sued by many for malpractice and his liscense was suspended. I thnk that TMZ needs to tone it down a little. People need to be careful of what they say as it may be cosidered slander. TMZ is only stating this to lure you into the site and keep money flowing in their direction also.

69. it's odd that tmz keeps talking about Oprah when the same doctor has been featured on other shows as well.

Hell the man had a show!!! but you want to point a finger at Oprah?

Perpahs she should "lighten" up!! wink,

TMZ is garbage...and Oprah knows this....

70. TMZ please use your research to educate and not to point fingers, Oprahs show is too engrossing for Oprah to do research, she hires people to do these things for the show.
There are plenty of plastic surgeons who aren't board certified, it isn't required. There are drs who are board certified who have multiple malpractice claims. If a dr. doesn't have malpractice claims, she/he either graduated this morning or she/ he's not actively practicing. There isn't a such thing - if a dr has any malpractice claims, in fact he/she will have malpractice claims no matter how competent he/she is. Those are the facts. This particular dr was on TV with his own show, what network gave him the show? Thats how Oprah heard about him. Oprahs not perfect, but none of us are. Stop putting all your expectations on her, let her enjoy her life and her giving and her helping others. Sometimes no matter how much checking you do and background research you do, sometimes you just don't receive all the facts pertaining to the subject- sometimes its the timing. Pray for Kanye and his family and hope that whoever needed to hear the story, heard it.

71. Who cares what Oprah thinks or says, why do you peopel worship her as if she's a God???? So you really think she will go against one of her own kind???? She's a disgrace and it's about time you people who idolize her realize this.

72. Why does TMZ.com always got negative things to say about everyone? They are a bunch of bottom feeders. The gut that started TMZ.com is such a loser. He must of sucked as a lawyer to have to switch to being a member of the paparazzi. They all need to start sueing them all for breaking the Privacy laws.

73. I have been wondering who did her work. She can't have lost that much weight and not had the extra saggy skin.

74. I think plastic surgery and Obstetrics (yes, geriatric specialists, haah) have the highest rate for insurance for obvious reasons. It is easy to sue...

75. I swear it never fails that no matter what the topic of discussion is, some redneck klansmen will bring race into it. What does Dr. Adams being a "bro" have to do with anything? This is about plastic surgery and Kanye's mom losing her life because of it and some idiot had to make a funky comment about Oprah and the Doctor being black. People can say whatever they want about black people and use every stereotype imaginable but it will never take away from the fact that white people in this country can be so damn HATEFUL and EVIL based solely on a damn color of skin!!!!!! Nobody should be throwing stones in Amerikka!!!!!
