Brandy Almost Off the Hook

The clock is ticking for the L.A. City Attorney's Office to file criminal charges against R&B singer Brandy, who was involved in a multiple car crash that killed Awatef Aboudihaj, the mother of two boys. The first anniversary of the accident, December 30, is fast approaching, but Brandy has not been charged.

Sources tell TMZ that the City Attorney's Office plans to make a decision at the very last moment. If charges aren't filed, chances are the public wouldn't notice over the holidays -- and the case would quietly go away.

TMZ spoke exclusively with Bill Sayed, lawyer for the victim's husband, Marouane Hdidou. Sayed questioned the delay, saying, "There is a death and obviously reckless driving involved, which is enough evidence for an involuntary manslaughter charge. As to why the City Attorney has taken this long? I think we would all like to know."

Over the past year, Brandy has pursued her usual activities; shopping, partying and living a normal life. Sayed says, "Brandy continues to live life with really no negative results ... doing what Brandy is doing ... as if though nothing has occurred here." He also describes how life has become a roller coaster for his client. "Thanksgiving just passed and he was all alone -- he has no family here."

On December 30, 2006, around 10:30AM, Brandy was driving her brand new Range Rover northbound on the 405 Freeway at about 65 mph -- and didn't notice when traffic in front of her slowed down. She then hit Awatef Aboudijah's car, which veered to the left and was hit by another vehicle before crashing into the center divider. Awatef died at the hospital eight hours later, from massive internal bleeding.

61. Any driver could have caused that accident. We speed on the highways and do not pay attention all the time which isn't good. I guess all drivers should be locked up and thrown in jail. Accidents happen all the time. It can happen to anyone even with a great driving record. We are all human and not perfect.

62. All of you are so perfect and self-righteous standing on your soap boxes demanding justice. Wait until you have an accident with your car on the highway: I bet you all will be singing a different tune. Yeah, none of you have ever had any tickets in your life. lol

63. Hi everyone,
I wrote comment #3 and I guess I am pretty stupid for not getting my facts straight. The fact is, I just lllooovvveee Brandy and I wanted to stand up for her so she didn't get punished for not having her eyes on the traffic ahead of her. Oh well, at least I tried.

66. Excuse me, you losers. What Brandy did was illegal! And speaking of people who got away with murder, let's not forget Matthew Broderick. Oh, I forgot. He's a double murderer.

67. ...I honestly can see the delay...they only like ot prosecute if they feel charges can be upheld in crt....don't know much abt this...but the posting states she hit the car by not slowing down....with the car veering off.....the other car technically is what caused the fatality...who knows...just puttin in my 2 cents...but in Canada, charges would have been laid with consequences...no doubt..feel bad for all involved....thankgod I have a dogsled and huskles for when I come out of my igloo, and the RCMP r their with their flags directing me!!!!!!! hahha...ok..bad time for joking ...but we all need a litlle laugh!

68. i'm sure all these fools would be singing a different tune if they were the ones who had caused the accident....throw the book at her...haha...it was as so many others have said, an accident....not like she was drunk or driving 90 miles an hour...

71. lmao @ bossman.... But Brandy should go to jail.... And this is because she was TEXT-MESSAGING on the freeway doing 65 MP. She has no friggin excuse, she should be in jail for involuntary manslaughter, just like the idiot Lane Garrison.

72. She was not text messaging or using her cell phone Alia. Those have already been ruled out. How stupid can some of you people be by posting false accusations? Read the case before you bring up unfounded lies.

73. Like it's been said a million times before, accidents are accidents. She wasn't speeding. She has expressed remorse. Things happen like this every day. The plantiff's atorney is trying to become famous by launching a case against Brandy. She wasn't on the phone. She wasn't text messaging. Anyone who lives in LA knows that traffic comes to haults all of the time. Things like this are bound to happen. Quite frankly I feel more sorry for Brandy than the victims family for making her feel horrible about an accident. Money can't bring her back, so the family should move on!

74. By today's standards, most drivers should be in jail and not allowed to drive. I would hate to be some of you people....

75. She should be charged with negligent driving, but I sure don't see a murder charge coming against her. Maybe involuntary vehicular manslaughter.
