Leno Flips: OK, I'll Pay Everyone

He totally screwed with us -- in a funny way -- but last night Jay Leno also set the record straight about the financial controversy regarding his "Tonight Show" employees.

Watch the video to hear Jay's side ... and no, we weren't having problems with our audio -- turns out Jay is part mime.

Jay's about-face is in contrast to what his rep told TMZ on Friday night -- that Jay was "more than generous" by giving his staff a Christmas bonus.

16. Jay, pay everyone but the writers. It's their strike and they knew going in that they will not get paid.

17. He's paying the non-writers ... you people need to learn how to read ... the non-writers (I am one for another show) make between $1000 - $1500/ wk. People in this tax bracket can't afford to take months off work like many of the greedy writers/actors. Contrary to popular belief, most of the non-writer/actor crews DON'T support the writers strike. Most of the writers striking don't even rely on entertainment writing for their living. They write in other capacities to pay the mortgage. I NEED to work to pay my bills, this is all that I do ... nothing else. I think it's great what these guys are doing for their crews. Actors on the other shows frozen by the strike should follow ...

18. Why on earth would he have to pay the writers or any one else that gets laid off because of the strike?? Companies have lay offs all the time and the CEO or President of those companies don't pay the people that get laid off out of THEIR own pockets. I think this is ridiculous that they would even think that he should pay them. Hire new writers!

21. Or just break the strike line like Ellen and walla, problem solved. She can afford to do the same thing yet she crosses the picket line every day. I guess the strike somehow inconveniences her even though she is a member of the WGA.

22. My sentiments exactly #17 except for the 'hire new writers' part. The people who are getting paid by the late night guys are the non-writers. The writers are striking and they have a union. They pay union dues so the union should take care of them and their salaries.

BUT - if non-union people down the line get laid off because of a union strike it's called 'UNEMPLOYMENT' - apply for it!

An individual should not be responsible for everyone's salary.

25. When I was writing my comments #17 was PSR. Now PSR is moved to #16. They are who I was responding to - not the current 17 about double chin.

26. #13 Jimbo is right on. Pay the staffers, not writers. and Jay, why the delay to pay until you saw what Conan, Dave and the others did. shame on you.

27. #1... it's not the writers Leno is paying, it's the other staff that aren't writers... receptionists, audio and lighting people etc.

28. He seems like the type who would pay his people quietly under the table. And he ROCKED in his subtle anti-pap camera blocking technique!!!

29. I just love Jay Leno.. He's such a good guy it's ridiculous. I dont why tmz is trying to make him out to be a chump. There's no body that has bigger heart than Jay. If you know his history and what he does for others, you (tmz) would'nt be posting this crap.

30. The staff hasn't gone without a single paycheck. Last week's post was not only inaccurate, it was premature. Why should he volunteer to pay his staff while NBC was still doing so? NBC paid the staff for 4 weeks. This is the first week that they have stopped doing so, so Leno is stepping up because he is a stand-up guy and is doing the best for the staff in order to support the writers (in spirit, not financially) who are all going without pay while standing up for their rights. Now if the studios would stop being petty money-grubbers and let the writers in on what they've earned, everybody can go back to work.
