Rapper Pimp C Found Dead in Hollywood Hotel Room

12/4/2007 4:12 PM PST BY TMZ STAFF

Pimp CUPDATE: Homicide detectives are now at the Mondrian Hotel investigating the death.

Pimp C, real name Chad Butler -- and one half of the rap duo UGK, was found dead in a hotel room this morning. He was 33.

L.A. County Fire responded to a 911 call at the Mondrian Hotel, located on trendy Sunset Strip in Hollywood. They arrived to his sixth floor hotel room to find him dead in bed.

UGK is best known for appearing on the Jay-Z track "Big Pimpin'" in 2000, and more recently with Outkast on the song "International Player's Anthem (I Choose You)." Pimp C had just performed with fellow rapper Too Short at the "House of Blues" in L.A. on Saturday night.

UPDATE: Jive Records has issued the following statement regarding Pimp C's death:

"It is with great sadness that Jive Records announces the passing of Chad "Pimp C" Butler, a member of the celebrated rap duo UGK (Underground Kingz). Jive Records' President and CEO Barry Weiss states: "We mourn the unexpected loss of Chad. He was truly a thoughtful and kind-hearted person. He will be remembered for his talent and profound influence as a pioneer in bringing southern rap to the forefront. He will be missed and our prayers remain with his family and Bun B. I've known Chad since he was 18, and we loved him dearly and he was a cherished member of the Jive family."

Born in Port Arthur, Texas, Butler's father was a trumpet player who played professionally with Solomon Burke. Outside of his father, the 33-year old rapper's influences varied, ranging from Bobby Bland, Jimmy McGriff, the 1960's Motown artists to Run DMC. Butler met his inseparable partner Bernard "Bun B" Freeman in high school where they formed UGK. In 1992, the duo signed to Jive Records and went on release a total of eight albums for the label. They earned their highest achievement earlier this year when their most recent album, UGK (Underground Kingz), debuted in the number one position on the album pop chart. According to the New York Times, UGK "helped inspire a generation of Southern hip-hop stars, from OutKast to Lil Wayne."

Bun B is not available for comment at this time."

For those of you who are making light of the situation. I hope no one shows you and your family the same disrespect that you are showing this man. Someone's child died and it's funny to you. Your ignorance is awesome. May God have mercy on your souls.

OK! Who is this thomas jefferson? Chad''PIMP C'' Butler was a rapper that grew up with nothing and became rich speaking about certain street knowledge. He was very good at what he did and PEOPLE respect him for that. Now if this bothers your ill minded altered ego, then you just need to learn how to accept how people are and feel. This is not an idea but reality. GROW THE PH_CK UP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

RIP PIMP C. Just because a man lived a negative lifestyle doesn't mean he should be disrespected. Even Hitler and Stalin should be respected. Every make mistakes and should be forgiven in the end. Even if you dislike/d his ways he should still be respected as a human. Maybe his name signified he wanted money and to live wealthy like pimps. The grills are just another style just like bell bottoms, abercombie and fitch etc. He expressed himself differently than others. Even though he went to jail for assault he was trying to change his life around. He was promoting positiveness. You be who are rude need to rethink things. The people who say it is black on black violence should really be less closed minded. Other races kill black people for the same reason that black people do. So do not assume and disrespect him just because you do not understand him.

I dont appreciate anyone making jokes about a dead person that can not defend themselves. To all you jacka$$es that think its a joke probably will not be fortunate enough to pass away in your sleep; you will probably die a slow miserable death and then people will joke about you; KARMA is a mutha!

for real you should be a little more respectful for the dead. If you dont know who pimp c is then chances are your in the minority. If you keep up with the music scene at all, not just rap music, you would realize that these artists influence our youth and our society as a whole and to say that his passing wasnt any big deal is way off. you might be able to post a comment about his death but Im pretty sure you never had a #1 single or album, like he did, so show some respect for the guy. R.I.P Pimp C.

For all of you idiots that don't know Pimp C, he is and always will be a legend. This man has produced nothing but hits since the early 90s when he came out with "Front Back, Side to Side." There are not too many artists that can boast that. His music and his talent will be remembered, by the ones that know whats up!!! For all of you others, I feel sorry for you that you are such dumb asses and will not realize what you missed out on!! He fully represented the dirty South and will be missed!! Rest in peace, Pimp C, we will miss you!

R I P Pimp C, this was really a shock, especially after the Sean Taylor murder. Some one mentioned that all the rapper's where dying, I'm looking at how many people that have spent time in TDCJ that are dying weekly including Chad. I hope it's not the food they are feeding them. I hope that Bun and his family will be alright especially his Mother and wife.
