Matt Lauer -- Pulling a Britney with Thijs?

He gave Britney Spears a hard time for driving with her son in her lap -- but Matt Lauer did something similar this weekend in New York, though he wasn't breaking the law.

TMZ cameras caught Lauer with wife Annette and son Thijs outside the Marc Jacobs store in SoHo on Saturday, with Lauer holding his son on his lap as his SUV took off. No car seat in sight.

Back in June of 2006, Lauer quizzed Britney in that infamous "Today" sit-down, and asked her why should would ever drive with her son in her lap -- pointing out how much negative press she got from the incident.

17. So true at #15 but he's not Britney Spears so nobody will care or
report on it! Britney Spears is the only parent in the WORLD to drive
with her child in her lap! *Sigh* I hate paps they basically have no
lives they follow Britney ALL-DAY! How could you follow one person
all-day? Don't they have lives? Don't they have family? Paps and
Brit are family actually, one big disfunctional family!

18. It's not about the law, it's about lives. Carseats save lives and if he wasn't using one then he's a dumbass just like Spears is. It doesn't matter if it's a hired car or not, the kid will still bounce around the back of the car like a ping pong ball should a collision occur. Bad move, Lauer!

21. There is NO carseat. None. At the end of the video you can CLEARLY see that Matt scoots ALL the way over to the left-most seat, then puts the baby in his LAP. The SUV drives off. PERIOD. NO CARSEAT. NO BUCKLING THE BABY IN. SUV DRIVES AWAY WITH BABY ON LAP.

He is a LIAR if he denies this. I dare him to challenge this. Someone needs to send this to Child Services and the news outlets. His smooth actions look like he's done this before. How many times?

24. That doesn't prove anything. These days the car seat is built into the car. And I agree, maybe he was just trying to get the hell out of there. I would too with all the cameras around.

25. Matt is a runaround there is no reason to his logic....or should I say lack of logic.

Posted at 8:21PM on Dec 10th 2007 by Matt is busted!

26. #25--trying to "get the hell out of there?"

OK, i get it...at the expense of his baby's SAFETY.

Yes, I see where his PRIORITIES lie. Got it.

He could have put his baby in a carseat BEFORE driving away. EASILY. Those SUV windows were blacked out.

He's disgraceful. And in your scenario, hugely self-centered over safetiness.

27. Hey you idiot HEADLINE READERS... read the entire article and maybe you won't come off as morons when giving your opinions. There is NO LAW requiring a child seat in hired vehicles... so therefore NO LAW WAS BROKEN.

28. Matt Lauer could care less what you morons think, he surely has better things to do than read what YOU PEOPLE think of how he conducts himself. You people are so jealous and petty you're trying so desperately to find dirt on a guy that broke no laws or did anything wrong other than be better than YOU. So, get a life morons and stop hating on people with real lives.

30. Why do you say it isn't against the law? As far as I know, it is.
