He gave Britney Spears a hard time for driving with her son in her lap -- but Matt Lauer did something similar this weekend in New York, though he wasn't breaking the law.
TMZ cameras caught Lauer with wife Annette and son Thijs outside the Marc Jacobs store in SoHo on Saturday, with Lauer holding his son on his lap as his SUV took off. No car seat in sight.
Back in June of 2006, Lauer quizzed Britney in that infamous "Today" sit-down, and asked her why should would ever drive with her son in her lap -- pointing out how much negative press she got from the incident.
For the record, unlike Brit, Lauer was in the backseat with his child and not behind the wheel. According to New York's Taxi & Limousine Commission, the child does not have to have a car seat because hired cars are exempt.

I like seeing the tables turned for a change. He always acts so damn smug and 'holier than thou' in his interviews. Guess its time for him to answer the questions.
What a lazy a-hole, taking such a senseless risk. The law is stupid too, accidents happen...hired car or not.
I am happy to see that you at least took the time to find out somr facts before you posted the story
Who cares what they're doing. I just can't get over the kids awful name. What the f--- is Thijs? They could have at least named him something people can pronounce. He's going to grow up hating the name.
So unsafe, so hypocritical, such a big SUV. He points fingers at Brit when he should be pointing at himself. You should know better than diving with babies on you lap.
Matt, get out of your SUVs and private jets. Buy a baby carseat with your "carbon credits."
Phony Global Warming person and phony good father. Notice that he hops into a huge SUV, yet he spouts Global Warming!!!!.
Every year for years, he's been circling the earth in private jets, expelling tons of CO2 in a massive carbon footprint in his silly segment "Where in the World is Matt Lauer?" for the Today Show? Katie: "Where are you NOW, Matt?" Matt: "Hi Katie, I'm on the North Pole, but tomorrow I'll be at the South Pole, then I'm off to....."
He's is using enough energy for a whole city of people, every time he hops on a private jet. So off course he drives around in a big SUV too.
I sincerely doubt that this incident will be reported on The Today Show like it was with Britney. NBC had the Britney episode plastered ALL over it. Day and night.
Sensational BS for TMZ to get lookers. Find him doing something improper. No, you go for the headline with no substance. You TMZ people get paychecks. Why don't you purchase lives?
what a self rightious a---hole knocking moron britney and he does the same after that prove every kind of celebrity are idiots
It's called hypocrisy Matt, "do as I say not as I do". You were called a cheeze ass, I like that but let me modify that to a "cheeze ass hypocritical wimp" also called a "girley man". Does your mommy still tie you shoes?
Hey............I think he is "Country, y'all"..............please let Britney interview him next time.
Basically what you are saying is that these two incidents are TOTALLY dissimilar, but you are making an issue out of them anyway. Buttney has people so snowed that they stay on the lookout for anything to throw the heat off of her. The world has been witness to all her transgressions. Mr. Lauer "had the nerve" to call her on some of her abject stupidity so her entourage spends time concocting a way to make him look bad. What a ration of CRAP!!! The stupid skank and everyone who assumes the role of enabler, should do the world a favor. SHUT UP AND DROP DEAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Someone said that maybe he was just trying to get away from all the paps.
There was ONE camera and ONE guy. Thanks to TMZ we have been made aware of his parenting technique with his baby in cars.
And like someone else pointed out, Matt is SO good with "gotcha" pressuring in front of international camera broadcasting, but this ONE time he can't deal with it himself. And he does need to be asked questions about this--ON CAMERA.
