Pet Store "Horrified" and "Appalled" by Puppy Mills

The chi-chi pet store where Paris Hilton and Britney Spears got their pooches says they're "horrified" and "appalled" by the possibility that their dogs might've come from a puppy mill, but stopped short of admitting that that's where they came from.

In a statement issued to TMZ, Pets of Bel Air says that it would "never knowingly buy a dog from a puppy mill," as the Humane Society of the United States has alleged. Pets of Bel Air also says that "to the best of our knowledge," all the puppies are from approved breeders. As for its permit to sell animals, which had expired, the shop says it was a clerical error that allowed it to expire. They've provided TMZ with the renewed permit.

Pet store: Click to watchDear Customers, Friends and Neighbors,

We are horrified by the recent video released by the Humane Society of the United States showing footage of puppy mills. We do not condone puppy mills; we would never knowingly buy a dog from a puppy mill; and we are appalled by the possibility that this may have happened. We are investigating all of our sources so that we continue to nurture the finest and most reputable dogs from the best breeders, a practice that we've held central to our business since we opened nine years ago.

To the best of our knowledge, our beautiful puppies purchased out-of –state are from USDA approved pet breeders. We rely on our governmental agency to be sure that these breeders are inspected. All of our puppies are given health checks by our store veterinarian when they become part of our family and before joining their new families. Our puppies are all sold with a health warranty, and are not available to go home to their new families until they have been cleared by a veterinarian.

It has been brought to our attention that our permit to sell animals has expired and we have remedied this issue. The permit fee went inadvertently unpaid due to a clerical error. Upon completion of an inspection by Animal Services, which is scheduled for Thursday, Pets of Bel Air will reopen.

Pets of Bel Air has been a trusted neighborhood business for many years. Every employee at Pets of Bel Air is an animal lover, as evidenced by the care and love we show our puppies and kittens each day; the healthy environment we provide; and the respect we show each of you. We continue to be a community pet store you can trust.

Thank you for your continued support.

Pets of Bel Air

UPDATE: The HSUS issued TMZ the following response: "The Humane Society of the United States' investigation makes it clear that Pets of Bel Air puppies came from puppy mills. The store's claim of ignorance just doesn't measure up: they made absolute assurances to their customers of the sources of their puppies - noting specifically on their website that their "babies come from private breeders". These claims are typical of slick pet store sales techniques - and Pets of Bel Air would have kept on making them if not for The HSUS' investigation.

They also can't deny the confessions of their store staff about the health of the animals, and their description of how they mislead customers.

Pets of Bel Air claims they set the standard for the pet store industry - that's exactly our fear. Pets of Bel Air's deceitful tactics are standard fare in pet stores across the nation. The pet store industry knowingly supports the cruel and reckless business of puppy mills. The HSUS will continue to work tirelessly to shine a spotlight on this indefensible abuse and let the public know how to avoid supporting it themselves."

16. I bought a domestic short haired kitten from a pet store, and after all the T’s were crossed and I’s dotted, they bring out the cat’s medicine for me to take home. They failed to mention it was sick! My first thought was “I don’t want that thing”, but I felt sorry for it and took it home. It gave its infection to my other cat, a purebred persian that I had bought from a breeder. So then I had TWO vet bills. I don’t think I’d buy another pet from a pet store, but you have to feel sorry for the ones in the store. I’m p.o’d at the pet store, but I feel like I rescued the cat. It's not her fault she ended up in there.

17. I SHOP AT PETS OF BEL AIR and their secondary store, puppies and babies on 3rd street.

Everyone that works there loves the animals and treats them kindly. The pups are always in an open environment for socialization. They only have one or two available at a time and i have never seen one that wasn't hearty and healthy. I cant personally attest to where they get the animals, but they are a far cry from those wretched souls at the beverly center. My dog loves their store, we stop by on our regular walks and my pooch is always excited to go in (even though she is about 10x the size of the dogs they have in the store.) The staff gives her personal attention and treats... even a smidge of training, as she IS a bit energetic sometimes.

I love these stores and I'll continue to give them my business! If you live near them, you should too!

Dont believe everything you read on TMZ!

18. Please do not buy a puppy from a pet store. Next time you are at the mall go into the pet store. If you see the dogs lying in the feces tell the clerk and speak LOUDLY so the whole store can hear you. They sell dogs from puppy mills 99% of them are sick and have kennel cough. We need to shut all of them down.!!!!!! They make them lie on those metal grates and they don't even have a blanket or toy.

19. All petstores buy from puppy mills! The Amish Country in PA is the main source of puppy mills in this country. Why not rescue a puppy and give your money to the shelters instead of these over priced, inhumane pet stores!!!!!!!!

THIS TOO IS RELEVANT FOR SHELTERS, THEY ARE THE WORST. THEY HIRE PEOPLE WHO ONLY CARE FOR A PAYCHECK AND LEAVE THESE ATTENTION STARVING ANIMALS IN CAGES BY THEM SELVES. WHEN I BOUGH MY DOGS FROM A BREEDER (WHAT YOU IDIOTS CALL A PUPPY MILL) AND WAS SHOCKED TO SEE HOW CLEAN AND CARING THEY WERE TOWARD THEIR DOGS. ALL THE DOGS HERE WERE HAPPY, FED WELL AND HEALTHY. WITH TMZ CHOOSING ONLY THOSE THAT ARE DIGUSTING BREEDER AND MAKING IT INTO EVERYONE WHO BREEDS ANIMALS...WHY NOT DO THE RESEARCH ABOUT THE GOOD BREEDERS AS MUCH AS YOU DO WITH THE BAD. IT SEEMS THAT TMZ ALWAYS LOOKS FOR THE FAILURES AND DOES NOT BRING UP THE SUCCESS OF THE BREEDERS THAT TAKE CARE OF THEIR ANIMALS, LIKE THE BREEDER I GOT MY DOGS FROM. SPCA AND OTHER SHELTERS ONLY WANT YOUR MONEY SO THAT THEY MAY EUTHANIZE THEM QUICKLY. PETA HAS BEEN RUNNED BY STUPID IDIOTS THAT DO WRONG TO PEOPLE BEFORE THINKING, I WILL NOT SUPPORT A NAST MEAN ORGANIZATION LIKE PETA OR THE SPCA. I HAVE GIVEN DONATIONS TO THEM IN THE PAST AND WHAT I SAW AT THEIR SHELTERS WAS HORRIFYING AND DISGUSTING. DFO NOT GIVE MONEY TO THESE FARCE OF ORGANIZATIONS WHO USES THE ANIMALS, THAT THEY MISTREAT FOR PROFIT. MY MONEY WAS ON A BREEDER AND BOY WAS I HAPPY. THESE BREEDERS YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT ARE FEW AND BETWEEN, THESE ARE PEOPLE WHO KNOW NOTHING ABOUT CARING FOR A DOG...LET ALONE SELL ONE. LIKE SOMEONE HERE STATED...BUY YOUR DOG YOUR WAY AND ALL THESE SUPPOSEDLY RIGHTGEOUS PEOPLE DO A RESEARCH BEFORE BITCHING!
MY DOGS ARE HAPPY DOGS, MY CAT IS A HAPPY 14 YEARS OLD, THEY HAVE NO COMPLAINTS..

22. The worst thing Paris Hilton ever did was march around with her cute little dressed chihuaha. Now everybody wants a miniature, purebred dog they can pretend is their baby. PLEASE - get your pets from the pound. If people stopped buying designer dogs, the pet overpopulation problem would be reduced. Also, don't forget to spay and neuter!!

23. Dear MY DOGGIE CAME FROM A STORE AND NOT THE SPCA

Instead of being caught up in how much you paid for your dogs and not letting anyone dictate where you buy them from, perhaps you should step back and reflect on how many puppy mills there actually are in the country, and the atrocities associated with them. I commend you for doing your research on the breeder where you bought your expensive dogs, but I don't believe anyone is accusing every single breeder of being a puppy mill. The reason that dogs have to be put down is not because they simply feel like murdering them, but because of the overpopulation of non-purebred dogs that people will not adopt. Perhaps because they aren't a testament to how much money someone has or won't fit in a louis vuitton dog carrier. I got my dog for 80 dollars, I adopted him. He's the best dog anyone could ask for.

24. Comment for posting #10. I to have shopped at both of their stores just because they are pleasant and smile when you walk in doesn't make them a good environment for selling puppies. Yes, the baby beds they have the puppies in are clean but how about what their parents have to endure living in cages all their life. I guess you don't care about that living in Beverly Glen. Do some research on puppy mills and you wil see how ill informed you are on the subject. Just last month a puppy mill in Western Virginia was shut down due to poor conditions for the animals. I will never shop in either of their stores or any store in the future that sells puppies .

28. Buying those little dogs like the celebs have from anywhere is a crap shoot. It's just like gambling. Some live, some die. Most have genetic problems. But rich people are stupid and spend their money like water, most of them are too shallow to give a damn so then they will probably just replace their dog when it dies and buy another one for $3000. They are meerly accessories to the wealthy. No wonder they like that store, it's just an easy way to buy pets off a shelf. Too bad no one has regard for living things.

29. That's a pile of cowplop. This pet store knows full well where these dogs come from. We adopted a golden retriever from a group who rescued him from a puppy mill. The dog was kept in a cage for two years, beaten and abused. He was heartworm positive and had to endure expensive treatment which made him very ill.

And yes, there is a huge difference between a reputable breeder and a puppy mill. Mills are disgusting, dirty places where the only objective is money. They care nothing about the dogs. Please, people, don't patronize these pet shops who deal with puppy mills. There are too many wonderful animals that are in need of a loving home! Our golden is a happy, loveable guy who has seen both sides of the fence.

30. ALL pet stores buy from puppy mills. No reputable breeder worth their ass would sell to a pet store. And to all you "mind yur own biznizz! u dont no me!!" idiots who do buy from these types of places - you have more money than brains and something tells me you should be neutered. When people become educated about how these dogs in mills are treated, when people finally open their eyes and stop buying animals from pet stores, only then will the mills close down. Puppies from mills have a higher chance of disease, guaranteeing vet bills that most buyers don't anticipate, causing them to dump their ill puppy at a shelter because they can't afford those bills. Closing down puppy mills = decreased dogs and cats in shelters.
