Pet Store "Horrified" and "Appalled" by Puppy Mills

The chi-chi pet store where Paris Hilton and Britney Spears got their pooches says they're "horrified" and "appalled" by the possibility that their dogs might've come from a puppy mill, but stopped short of admitting that that's where they came from.

In a statement issued to TMZ, Pets of Bel Air says that it would "never knowingly buy a dog from a puppy mill," as the Humane Society of the United States has alleged. Pets of Bel Air also says that "to the best of our knowledge," all the puppies are from approved breeders. As for its permit to sell animals, which had expired, the shop says it was a clerical error that allowed it to expire. They've provided TMZ with the renewed permit.

Pet store: Click to watchDear Customers, Friends and Neighbors,

We are horrified by the recent video released by the Humane Society of the United States showing footage of puppy mills. We do not condone puppy mills; we would never knowingly buy a dog from a puppy mill; and we are appalled by the possibility that this may have happened. We are investigating all of our sources so that we continue to nurture the finest and most reputable dogs from the best breeders, a practice that we've held central to our business since we opened nine years ago.

To the best of our knowledge, our beautiful puppies purchased out-of –state are from USDA approved pet breeders. We rely on our governmental agency to be sure that these breeders are inspected. All of our puppies are given health checks by our store veterinarian when they become part of our family and before joining their new families. Our puppies are all sold with a health warranty, and are not available to go home to their new families until they have been cleared by a veterinarian.

It has been brought to our attention that our permit to sell animals has expired and we have remedied this issue. The permit fee went inadvertently unpaid due to a clerical error. Upon completion of an inspection by Animal Services, which is scheduled for Thursday, Pets of Bel Air will reopen.

Pets of Bel Air has been a trusted neighborhood business for many years. Every employee at Pets of Bel Air is an animal lover, as evidenced by the care and love we show our puppies and kittens each day; the healthy environment we provide; and the respect we show each of you. We continue to be a community pet store you can trust.

Thank you for your continued support.

Pets of Bel Air

UPDATE: The HSUS issued TMZ the following response: "The Humane Society of the United States' investigation makes it clear that Pets of Bel Air puppies came from puppy mills. The store's claim of ignorance just doesn't measure up: they made absolute assurances to their customers of the sources of their puppies - noting specifically on their website that their "babies come from private breeders". These claims are typical of slick pet store sales techniques - and Pets of Bel Air would have kept on making them if not for The HSUS' investigation.

They also can't deny the confessions of their store staff about the health of the animals, and their description of how they mislead customers.

Pets of Bel Air claims they set the standard for the pet store industry - that's exactly our fear. Pets of Bel Air's deceitful tactics are standard fare in pet stores across the nation. The pet store industry knowingly supports the cruel and reckless business of puppy mills. The HSUS will continue to work tirelessly to shine a spotlight on this indefensible abuse and let the public know how to avoid supporting it themselves."

31. #7 you are in TOTAL denial. To label all shelter organizations as "fools" and "filthy" etc. is just totally FOOLISH. I can personally attest to the opposite experience more than once. And no one is suggesting that buying a dog from a good breeder is a bad thing to do (though thank GOd so many of us will be saving lives adopting out of shelters/pounds instead). Whether or not someone's precious and expensive dogs are healthy and cute isn't the point here -- the point is that those dogs parents might have been in living HELL for years and you are supporting that brand of torture! Guilt by association applies to anyone who knowingly supports the cruel evil reality of puppy mills, and to anyone who chooses to stick their head in the sand rather than investigate the true origin of the puppy they paid dearly for.

Think of it this way: would you lock a little chihuahua in a cage for ten years and force it to have puppies over and over again? They were certainly as cute and loveable as the two you currently own. If the answer is no, then you shouldn't speak out in defense of pet stores, the vast majority of which purchase from mills and deny it.

32. I hold the pet stores & Vick in the same esteem! And what is up with grown men wanting those little feminine dogs. Men, stay away from those little dogs!!! They decrease from your manhood, not increase. Get a dog more your size. Women, generally, are smaller than men, so its no secret that they gravitate towards smaller breeds. But men, you are full size, and so you need a fullsize companion. Be a man! Get a dog that you can't pick up & put down like your old lady's purse. Git-R-Done!

33. Another Nobody- be a SOMEBODY!

Don't let these puppy mill pimps rip you off. They are in the business of animal abuse.

Instead, get involved with a small dog rescue program and you can really be somebody. There are lovely small dogs in the pound that need rescuers. And groups you can work with.

You can change the world for these dogs.

37. Like everyone says, no reputable breeder would sell to a petstore. A GOOD breeder does not pump dogs out like a factory. A GOOD breeder usually has a few dogs they breed and take good care of them. My dad bought us a dog from a breeder nearly 10 years ago, we visited their home and the dogs were very well taken care of. On the other side, I bought my dog from a shelter 2 years ago and he was in foster care, being very well taken care of as well. People don't do enough research when they adopt a pet, if they did they wouldn't buy from pet stores and if pet stores did their research they wouldn't buy from "breeders". Everyday I get at least 10 emails about dogs in southern missouri who are going to be put down simply because they have no room for them - good dogs too, great dogs. These are puppies, they are malteses, chihuahuas, the kind of dogs people pay big money for. PLEASE at least first CHECK your local shelter before contacting a breeder. There might be a cute little puppy waiting for you down the street for $150 instead of $1,000 across the country.

38. That link just shows you the USDA permit of the puppy mill. That means nothing. Butchers have USDA permits as well. A USDA permit just means that they were inspected and the animals had food, water, cage big enough to turn around in. That's still a puppy mill. BTW the link is messed up.

39. You are the BIGGEST idiot. I just jumped around thanking GOD that I am not you. How incredibly sad for you that you are so incredibly stupid. 1st of all Breeders & Puppy Mills are two totally different things. You should know which one you purchased your dogs. Anyone with half a brain could tell the difference.

1.Puppy mills are where hundreds and hundreds of dogs are kept in cages. Never interacted with and only used for breeding. Yes, the puppies get out and are usually placed into good homes. BUT THAT IS NOT THE POINT. What about the PUPPY’S PARENT'S they NEVER get out. Stop buying dogs at pet stores your not “saving" that one puppy you’re perpetuating the disgusting cycle of mistreatment.

2.Back yard breeds or hobby breeders are your average Joe who doesn’t really know anything but breeds their dogs for profit/ fun. I personally wouldn’t buy from a BYB but its better than a pet store.

3.Reputable Breeders. These are the people who truly have the dog’s best interest in mind. They only breed the best examples of the breeds (this is what dog shows are for). They do EXTENSIVE health testing. Before they Breed the dog the do multiple tests (hips, heart, genetic testing, etc) to ensure the dog they are about to breed is not going to pass down bad genes/ health problems. These Breeders also only sell their dogs to people who will spay/ neuter and agree to certain other stipulations.

4.The SPCA/ Shelters. For anyone who thinks theses places are dirty and don’t care for animals YOU ARE SERIOUSLY INSANE. Most people who work at shelters do so for the love of animals only. Why else would they be there? They work for almost no money. And besides the paid staff there are literally hundreds of volunteers to work there for FREE!!!! They spend their free time walking, bathing, training these poor homeless animals and get no compensation for it. They do this so that these animals get the second chance they deserve. And yes sometimes dogs are euthanized. It’s terribly sad but there are occasions where the animal is aggressive and cannot be rehabilitated. Or far too sick to be adopted. But when these dogs are euthanized they are with staff or volunteers who show them more love & care then they received by the original owners who screwed them up in the 1st place. Many staff workers put there own lives at risk to sit with these aggressive dogs while they die so that the dog is held lovingly and shown compassion. Other workers go out of their way to bring these dog’s burgers and fries for their last meals. This is unfortunate but as long as there are irresponsible dog owners dumping dogs there will be shelters that have to euthanize. However there are FAR more animals saved by these organizations then euthanized.

5.Breed Specific rescues. These are networks of people (AGAIN MOSTLY VOLUNTEERS) who save specific breeds. They have foster homes for the dogs while they are waiting to place them. They ensure the dogs are spayed/ neutered, receive vet care, training, and anything else the dog may need. If you cannot find a reputable breeder then rescues are a fantastic place to get a purebred dog. They even occasionally have puppies.

I am willing to guess that poster #19 is pissed at the SPCA because they turned her down and didn’t let her adopt a dog. It happens all the time. The SPCA & Rescues are picky about where the dogs are placed (i.e. they sometimes do home checks). This is in the best interest of the dog. He/ she has already been dumped by one idiot so they do all that they can to ensure the dog doesn’t get into the wrong hands again. So I am sorry that you weren’t approved but I assume they had a good reason. And after reading your post I think I know what the reason was (refer back to my 1st sentence).

40. THEY KNEW EXACTLY WHERE THE DOGS WERE COMING FROM. Sure it's easy to blame the government agency who ALSO WASN'T DOING THEIR JOB.

Once again, nobody takes responsibility and blame just gets shifted down the line. While ignorant people continue to support these money hungry businesses.

JOKE.

41. The ONLY way to get rid of puppy mills is to get the stores to stop buying from them and for the public to stop patronizing the stores.

Don't be misled because the puppies in the stores have been bathed and cleaned up. Puppy mills and backyard breeders are a disgusting business.

Real simple.

42. Another Nobody, if you shop at these puppy-selling pet stores and support these losers, then your name describes you well.

43. Another Nobody -- wow, it's a good thing these posts are anonymous, because your last one was really embarrassing. And, your still supporting puppy mills by championing these pet stores, whether or not the people that work there are friendly or not. Get a clue.

44. Pet stores buy their puppies cheap from puppy mills...jack the prices way up and make a HUGE profit. It's a joke that they are saying that they try to buy from "reputable" breeders. If that were the case, they would buy their puppies locally where they could inspect the kennels. You know they are getting them cheap when they can afford to have the puppies flown in from another state, and still make a big profit.

Stop buying from pet stores...it keeps the puppy mill's in business. If you must have a pure bred dog, check your local shelters and breed rescues first...if that doesn't pan out, check your local classifieds, go to the homes...be picky!
