Pet Store "Horrified" and "Appalled" by Puppy Mills

The chi-chi pet store where Paris Hilton and Britney Spears got their pooches says they're "horrified" and "appalled" by the possibility that their dogs might've come from a puppy mill, but stopped short of admitting that that's where they came from.

In a statement issued to TMZ, Pets of Bel Air says that it would "never knowingly buy a dog from a puppy mill," as the Humane Society of the United States has alleged. Pets of Bel Air also says that "to the best of our knowledge," all the puppies are from approved breeders. As for its permit to sell animals, which had expired, the shop says it was a clerical error that allowed it to expire. They've provided TMZ with the renewed permit.

For the statement in full, read after the jump.

Pet store: Click to watchDear Customers, Friends and Neighbors,

We are horrified by the recent video released by the Humane Society of the United States showing footage of puppy mills. We do not condone puppy mills; we would never knowingly buy a dog from a puppy mill; and we are appalled by the possibility that this may have happened. We are investigating all of our sources so that we continue to nurture the finest and most reputable dogs from the best breeders, a practice that we've held central to our business since we opened nine years ago.

To the best of our knowledge, our beautiful puppies purchased out-of –state are from USDA approved pet breeders. We rely on our governmental agency to be sure that these breeders are inspected. All of our puppies are given health checks by our store veterinarian when they become part of our family and before joining their new families. Our puppies are all sold with a health warranty, and are not available to go home to their new families until they have been cleared by a veterinarian.

It has been brought to our attention that our permit to sell animals has expired and we have remedied this issue. The permit fee went inadvertently unpaid due to a clerical error. Upon completion of an inspection by Animal Services, which is scheduled for Thursday, Pets of Bel Air will reopen.

Pets of Bel Air has been a trusted neighborhood business for many years. Every employee at Pets of Bel Air is an animal lover, as evidenced by the care and love we show our puppies and kittens each day; the healthy environment we provide; and the respect we show each of you. We continue to be a community pet store you can trust.

Thank you for your continued support.

Pets of Bel Air

UPDATE: The HSUS issued TMZ the following response: "The Humane Society of the United States' investigation makes it clear that Pets of Bel Air puppies came from puppy mills. The store's claim of ignorance just doesn't measure up: they made absolute assurances to their customers of the sources of their puppies - noting specifically on their website that their "babies come from private breeders". These claims are typical of slick pet store sales techniques - and Pets of Bel Air would have kept on making them if not for The HSUS' investigation.

They also can't deny the confessions of their store staff about the health of the animals, and their description of how they mislead customers.

Pets of Bel Air claims they set the standard for the pet store industry - that's exactly our fear. Pets of Bel Air's deceitful tactics are standard fare in pet stores across the nation. The pet store industry knowingly supports the cruel and reckless business of puppy mills. The HSUS will continue to work tirelessly to shine a spotlight on this indefensible abuse and let the public know how to avoid supporting it themselves."

46. I think the owners of Pets of Bel-Air (puh-lease, their name says it all!) need to be boxed and shipped to one of those puppy mills for the holidays. HoHoho!

47. I buy them from a pet supply store...that sells SUPPLIES not pets...and that believes that pet stores that sell puppies are supporting animal cruelty in the form of puppy mills. Stores like this are pretty common seeing as an enormous lot of people do not condone puppy mills and/or animal cruelty. It's great that you adopted your dog -- it would be even greater if you could admit that puppy stores that support puppy mills do not deserve our business (again, no matter how "friendly" the clerks are.) Now THAT would be a really Big Deal.

48. # 7/ #19 I am willing to guess that poster is pissed at the SPCA because they turned her down and didn’t let her adopt a dog. It happens all the time. The SPCA & Rescues are picky about where the dogs are placed (i.e. they sometimes do home checks). This is in the best interest of the dog. He/ she has already been dumped by one idiot so they do all that they can to ensure the dog doesn’t get into the wrong hands again. So I am sorry that you weren’t approved but I assume they had a good reason. And after reading your post I think I know what the reason was (refer back to my 1st sentence).

#40 - Buy your supplies at petco/ petsmart or other stores that don’t sell dogs. The two I mentioned give space to rescue adoption events on the weekends and support shelters by donating supplies

49. I BOUGHT A MALTESE FROM PETS OF BEL AIR (MY 3RD) AND IT WAS SO SICK IT ALMOST DIED. THEY EVEN TOOK IT BACK TO "TREAT" IT AND IT STILL DID NOT GET BETTER (THERE WERE TWO OTHER DOGS, DIFFERENT BREEDS SICK THAT HAD BEEN SOLD AND 1 THAT HAD NOT BEEN SOLD UPSTAIRS SICK AT THE SAME TIME). I TOOK IT TO THEIR VET AND HE GAVE IT TWO ROUNDS OF ANTIBIOTICS AND SHE KEPT LOSING WEIGHT, MY HUSBAND EVEN SAID SHE LOOKED LIKE A RESCUE. I THEN TOOK IT TO MY VET AND NURSED HER BACK TO HEALTH. PETS OF BEL AIR WOULD NOT PAY OR BE RESPONSIBLE BECAUSE THEY WOULD ONLY PAY IF IT WAS THEIR VET EVEN THOUGH THEIR VET WAS NOT HELPING HER AND WOULD NOT DO THE TESTS SHE NEEDED.

50. Apparently you read my post all wrong. Well.. technically you read INTO my post all wrong, but people are good for that online.

So if the pet supply store I patronize has a dog in it for sale... with papers about the breeder it came from... that is IN THE LOCAL AREA. They support Puppy Mills?

Maybe you can help me understand... if they give you the phone number and address of the breeder.... if they encourage you to make a visit to see the bitch before you take the puppy home.... thats supporting a puppy mill??? If the bitch and the sire are registered with the AKC or the UKC.... are you getting my drift?

I agree that 99% of pet stores are selling animals from puppy mills, I have always known that and thats why I went to a shelter. (As i briefly mentioned in my first post)

All I was saying is that THIS pet store is one of the FEW stores that sells healthy animals, bred in a healthy and responsable kennel that follows all the appropriate breeding practices mentioned by Elaine. They should not be chastised because some celebrat purchases more dogs than than average person could afford. Like the french bulldog that was delivered by cesarian because the dog's head is so large.... HELLO RESPONSABLE BREEDING PRACTICES.

Let me reiterate....... THIS store is a GOOD STORE that encourages the purchase of a dog from a reputable breeder and they should not be lumped into the same category as a pet store who continues to feed the cycle of abuse.

There is nothing wrong with supporting your local breeder. This store supports its breeders and should not be rolled into one lump with the rest.

52. I found this information on the USDA website as it has the lists of all USDA active licensed and registered facilities and this includes breeders and/or dealers who sell for the petstores. The USDA license number of 48-A-1486 belongs to Weaver, Richard and Cynthia, Weaver Row Kennel, 328 Rd 31, Elk City, KS 67334. The letter "A" in the USDA license means this is a breeders license. This breeder breeds and then sells the puppies to a dealer/broker who then sells to the petstores. The dealer/broker has a "B" USDA license. A dealer/broker can also own breeding dogs and sell their own puppies directly to the petstores.

I rescued a breeding mom, 4 years old and 3 of her pups, 3 months old, from a dog auction earlier this year. It was a dealer/broker getting out of the business. The mom has cataracts and may have a thyroid problem. Only one of the pups was healthy but it will need health tests done later in life. One of the pups has an eye problem, a luxating patella, and urinary problems. The other pup has limited vision in one eye and has problems with the other. I am familiar with the breed and know what health tests to have done. These are the kind of puppies that are being sold in the petstores. The only reason these did not go to a petstore is because their birthday was in mid December and could not be sold as Christmas puppies. The market for petstore puppies really slows down after Christmas and these pups would not have been available for sale until mid to late February. Usually the pups for my breed being sold in a petstore start at $1200-$1500 each. One can get a puppy from a reputable breeder who does health testing for $600-$800.

Watch out for breeders selling on the internet on certain websites as many of those are USDA licensed commercial breeders. Basically you are just buying a petstore puppy from these breeders. If the dealer/broker does not buy their pups then they can just sell them on the internet. For my breed, a dealer/broker usually pays only $200-$300 for each pup.

For more information about puppymills and dog auctions which are held every weekend from Feb-June and then from Sept-Dec., go to www.nopuppymills.com. There is a huge dog auction this coming weekend in MO where 570 dogs are being sold in one day.

53. I SHOP AT PETS OF BEL AIR and their secondary store, puppies and babies on 3rd street.

Everyone that works there loves the animals and treats them kindly. The pups are always in an open environment for socialization. They only have one or two available at a time and i have never seen one that wasn't hearty and healthy. I cant personally attest to where they get the animals, but they are a far cry from those wretched souls at the beverly center. My dog loves their store, we stop by on our regular walks and my pooch is always excited to go in (even though she is about 10x the size of the dogs they have in the store.) The staff gives her personal attention and treats... even a smidge of training, as she IS a bit energetic sometimes.

I love these stores and I'll continue to give them my business! If you live near them, you should too!

Dont believe everything you read on TMZ!

The fact that the people that work there love the pets is irrelevant. It is the owners of the store that buy these pets that are under investigation, not the employees. It is absurd to think that the owners would have no idea where there pets are coming from, as they have to know who they are paying for them. If they are actually from a puppy mill, they sure as heck are not going to tell the employees. Less chance of someone ratting them out. Next time, read the entire article and get all the facts before you post.

54. Nobody is saying that ALL breeders are puppy mills. Unfortunately the REPUTABLE breeders are VERY FEW AND FAR BETWEEN. And as stated before, reputable breeders DO NOT SELL TO PET STORES. AKC is a joke and will register ANYTHING as long as the parents have papers. That means that the "'clean healthy" dogs that you are so proud of "spending so much money on" may or may not have genetics that are even close to being healthy or even good. Any backyard breeder who KNOWS NOTHING about genetics can put dog A and dog B together and sell you " clean healthy puppies" and they can also be expensive so you can be so proud of that. Why people choose badly bred expensive dogs over dogs that for whatever reason are already needing homes is beyond me. You think the poor dogs should pay just because you hate 'self righteous' people or PETA or whatever your rant is???
Quit bashing the SPCA with it's " dirty scrungy dogs" . 1 out of 4 of these "dirty scrungy" dogs is a purebreed and most likely came from "such a great breeder, not a puppy mill!!" ( see 'backyard breeder' ) And PETA has nothing to do with the SPCA or the County Animal Shelters. A lot of people dont support PETA but are intelligent enough to see the difference between PETA and Animal Shelters..
And just to clarify things, the 'dogcatcher' does NOT inspect your house and the "enormous" adoption fee is between $30 and $100 for most L.A. County shelters.
Just because you spend a lot of money on an animal does NOT mean that you got a genetically healthy or temperamentally sound pet and it honestly does not even ensure that you got a purebred pet , since that seems so important to some people.

55. i've been to a few town animal shelters. If puppy mkills are in the same condition as they are-pet stores should stick to selling birds and fisf

Posted at 11:28PM on Dec 12th 2007 by Jo

56. If buying from a local breeder buyers really should keep in mind that having AKC papers means NOTHING. AKC couldn't care less if the person doing the breeding is responsible and is breeding for health and temperament. They will literally register ANYTHING as long as the parents have papers no matter how poorly bred the animals are. That is not to say that ALL are poorly bred and there are no good breeders. But if you MUST have a purebreed dog do not rely simply on " well, I saw the parents and they look healthy". Badly bred dogs ( and other animals ) can look perfectly healthy but have horrible genetic or temperament problems that dont show up right away. Research this breeder .. Having AKC papers means NOTHING. Having healthy LOOKING parents means NOTHING.

57. We need more lawmakers to get involved in shutting down puppy mills. Everyone from local lawmakers to the President should take a stand against this horrific abuse & neglect. The only politician I know of who's actually doing something is Gov. Ed Rendell from Pennsylvania. (and I'm from Colorado)

DON'T BREED OR BUY WHILE HOMELESS PETS DIE

Posted at 8:35PM on Dec 12th 2007 by Don't Breed Or Buy While Homeless Pets Die

58. On the flip side..isn't it a good thing that the puppies purchased at Pets of Bel Air were all given a clean bill of health, and went to loving homes? I don't really agree with puppy mills, but my dog did come from one. She is healthy, happy, and I just adore her! It's the outcome
that should be applauded! So....RELAX!

59. The USDA is a joke!!!! Anyone who buys a dog when there are so many in shelters is not an animal lover!!! These celebrities buy dogs as a "Trend" or as a status symbol, and when they tire of them they disgard the dogs like used trash. When you adopt from a shelter, as I have done, you have to prove that you have a current veterinarian and that you can provide references from that vet as a responsible pet owner. Anyone can go into a pet store with a credit card, purchase a dog, and then take it home and abuse it.

People like Spears and Hilton have no values, anyway, so why should they care if a dog comes from a puppy mill. If it dies, they can afford to buy others to replace it. They can barely take care of themselves as evidenced by their constantly bizarre behavior, so can you expect them to research where the dogs they buy come from, or even care about it ????

BOYCOTT PUPPY MILLS! Write to your congressman and tell him/her to support a bill to stop the USDA from licensing these businesses and to shut them down, and any USDA official caught taking a bribe from a puppy mill to turn his/her back, should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law, along with the owners of the puppy mills.

As evidenced by the jail sentences of Michael Vick and his cronies, this behavior will no longer be tolerated.
Also, please send letters of protest against reducing Vick's 23 month prison term by 3 months for good behavior. He needs to sit in jail for every minute of those 23 months!!!!
Thanks!

60. There are a few rescues run by truly dedicated volunteers, trying to help, like www.milldogrescue.org - but the problem is too overwhelming.

Animals have no voice, no choice. If we don't defend them and speak up for them, who will?
