Pet Store "Horrified" and "Appalled" by Puppy Mills

The chi-chi pet store where Paris Hilton and Britney Spears got their pooches says they're "horrified" and "appalled" by the possibility that their dogs might've come from a puppy mill, but stopped short of admitting that that's where they came from.

In a statement issued to TMZ, Pets of Bel Air says that it would "never knowingly buy a dog from a puppy mill," as the Humane Society of the United States has alleged. Pets of Bel Air also says that "to the best of our knowledge," all the puppies are from approved breeders. As for its permit to sell animals, which had expired, the shop says it was a clerical error that allowed it to expire. They've provided TMZ with the renewed permit.

Pet store: Click to watchDear Customers, Friends and Neighbors,

We are horrified by the recent video released by the Humane Society of the United States showing footage of puppy mills. We do not condone puppy mills; we would never knowingly buy a dog from a puppy mill; and we are appalled by the possibility that this may have happened. We are investigating all of our sources so that we continue to nurture the finest and most reputable dogs from the best breeders, a practice that we've held central to our business since we opened nine years ago.

To the best of our knowledge, our beautiful puppies purchased out-of –state are from USDA approved pet breeders. We rely on our governmental agency to be sure that these breeders are inspected. All of our puppies are given health checks by our store veterinarian when they become part of our family and before joining their new families. Our puppies are all sold with a health warranty, and are not available to go home to their new families until they have been cleared by a veterinarian.

It has been brought to our attention that our permit to sell animals has expired and we have remedied this issue. The permit fee went inadvertently unpaid due to a clerical error. Upon completion of an inspection by Animal Services, which is scheduled for Thursday, Pets of Bel Air will reopen.

Pets of Bel Air has been a trusted neighborhood business for many years. Every employee at Pets of Bel Air is an animal lover, as evidenced by the care and love we show our puppies and kittens each day; the healthy environment we provide; and the respect we show each of you. We continue to be a community pet store you can trust.

Thank you for your continued support.

Pets of Bel Air

UPDATE: The HSUS issued TMZ the following response: "The Humane Society of the United States' investigation makes it clear that Pets of Bel Air puppies came from puppy mills. The store's claim of ignorance just doesn't measure up: they made absolute assurances to their customers of the sources of their puppies - noting specifically on their website that their "babies come from private breeders". These claims are typical of slick pet store sales techniques - and Pets of Bel Air would have kept on making them if not for The HSUS' investigation.

They also can't deny the confessions of their store staff about the health of the animals, and their description of how they mislead customers.

Pets of Bel Air claims they set the standard for the pet store industry - that's exactly our fear. Pets of Bel Air's deceitful tactics are standard fare in pet stores across the nation. The pet store industry knowingly supports the cruel and reckless business of puppy mills. The HSUS will continue to work tirelessly to shine a spotlight on this indefensible abuse and let the public know how to avoid supporting it themselves."

61. I'm frustrated that people would imply that it is necessary to stay away from pet stores in order to solve this issue. While I certainly cannot comment on this store in particular, there are plenty of wonderful independent pet stores that only provide dogs and cats that either are in desperate need of a home (helping out the local shelters) or come from great local breeders. There certainly are good breeders that deal with pet stores, and not all breeders that do are puppy mills. I think the best action is to be as knowledgable as possible about your local stores, and to not make rash decisions when deciding to buy a new furry friend. The local pet store is one of the few remaining decent independent industries, and while yes they have a bottom line, the majority of people who own or work at a pet store are animal lovers through and through. Please continue to support your local stores; just make sure you do research, examine closely that the animals are happy and healthy, and really get to know your favorite pet shop!

62. Try Petfinder.com.....
Designer clothes, designer dogs. Pathetic, snobs. I have 2 dogs adopted as strays, they didn't come with papers or pedigrees and I wouldn't trade them for the world.

63. I thought Britney bought her puppy at Posh Puppy (I'm pretty sure), the same place as the Kardashians did.

64. If you want to close your eyes and pretend that everything's fine when you buy a puppy from a store, go ahead, but you're only kidding yourself and adding to ungodly suffering for dogs and puppies at the puppy mills. Just explore and educate yourself on the subject. Don't depend on the store or government "explanations" because it's all self-serving to make money to sell animals, regardless of the conditions the animals are housed in. Educate yourself & see what's really going on. Find a breeder, look at the conditions the animals live in, see the parent dogs, see how the breeder treats the dogs. All these things are important. These are living breathing creatures. How can we turn our backs on them? Just educate yourself before you buy. And go even further. If you see abuse, report it. We have to take care of the animals. We're their only hope. It's our responsibility.

65. They get their dogs just like every other pet store. From the Hunte Corporation and Lambriar Inc. These are 2 Brokers are sell the dogs to the store. Although they are not the actual breeders, they do buy the dogs from puppy mills for cheap, set their price for the pet store, microchip, vaccinate & deworm the pups. Any Pet Store that tells you otherwise is full of crap.

67. Sick, inbred puppies are only a part of the horror of puppy mills - at least the puppies get to leave, generally to a pet store where even if it's sick the odds are good it'll still be "puppy cute" and some fool will buy it anyway. The worst part of the tragedy is the mother dogs, who are generally bred twice a year, never leave their cramped, filthy cages until they are killed (maybe humanely but more likely not) when they can no longer produce.

If you want a purebred, either try breed rescue or at least find a reputable breeder who will be happy to show you the mom (and the sire if he's on the premises), where the litter was raised, and provide you with valid vet records. And a reputable breeder will always take the dog back in the event you are unable to keep it (even years later), that is a surefire sign of a responsible and caring breeder. Ethical breeders want to approve who their babies go to personally, and will never ever sell to pet stores!

Please do NOT pay a marked up price to a pet store to support filthy, evil puppy mills (because remember, the broker, the transportation company and the pet store are all getting a piece of the selling price, so you are overpaying wildly) for a puppy conceived and raised in canine HELL. It doesn't matter how "nice" and "caring" the people in the store may seem, in the end they are just pimps. A pet is a 10-20 year commitment to a life, is it too much to ask that you spend a day or two to choose wisely rather than making an impulse purchase at the mall? PETCO doesn't sell puppies and kittens, ask yourself WHY that is!

68. I pass two such puppy mills near the Missouri/Arkansas border. The homes look like crap. One breeds yellow labs. The other home offers different breeds depending on the season. Both have large signs in their yards that can be seen from Highway 65.

I would like to see these places investigated... Anyone got a number to call?

69. "if they give you the phone number and address of the breeder"

Nobody, are you thick, or just pretending to be?

Do you think the hillbilly bubba Missouri or Arkansas breeders torturing dogs are going to let you come VISIT?

(that's even if the pet store is honest, and doesn't lie about the breeder, which many do)

Yes, dimwit. If you patronize this pet store, you are SUPPORTING animal abuse with your money.

And if you'd like to see just what kind of things go on at the "breeders" that sell to pet stores like this one, check out http://www.prisonersofgreed.org

These pet stores rake in the bucks from dimwitted peasants that believe their idiotic lies.

70. And the AKC and the UKC register PUPPY MILL PUPPIES

They too make a fast buck off the ignorant who think that "papers" prove anything
or are some kind of status symbol

Suckers get suckered by the AKC and UKC

71. ruralusa, file a report at http://stoppuppymills.org/forms/tell_us_your_story.html

Keep in mind that in Missouri, the legislators and local authorities collude with the puppy mill industry and help protect them
(you have the biggest puppy mill broker in Missouri, Hunte Corportation. Notorious. In bed with the AKC. And they spread the "influence" around.)

When Missouri people contact the governor and legislators and say NO MORE PUPPY MILLS, it will stop.

There are things starting to happen in PA because people got mad and made noise.

72. ADOPT PEOPLE!
There are perfectly good pets awaiting homes at shelters, sanctuaries, rescues and foster homes. All my pets are adopted - I paid an adoption fee that was next to nothing for two purebreds and they are healthier and have less psychological problems then my friends with pet store puppies.

74. How could you even consider buying from a pet store / breeder once you know the conditions and abuses those poor breeder dogs are subjected to. We need laws to protect the voiceless victims. Until then, NEVER EVER buy a dog from a pet store. To do this is to keep the cycle of abuse and depraved conditions a way of life for thousands of innocent dogs.

Their need is so great and there are so few who care!!!!

75. To mitigate the bad press, perhaps Pets of Belair should also consider a rescue adoption area in their store for lovely animals that they have taken from kill shelters? There are an awful lot of very beautiful puppies and kittens brought in each year, as well as healthy, well behaved adult pets, even rare purebreds. People would be more than happy to pay adoption fees for the pets especially after they have been groomed, checked and assessed for socialization. People also feel good about the adoption knowing that a life was saved.

Consider it, guys! It wouldn't detract from the breeder business, it would just provide more pets to choose from and you may redeem yourselves. In the future, you may want to check Dog Fancy and Cat Fancy for lists of local licensed breeders who specialize in home raised, single breed bloodline animals.
