Pet Store "Horrified" and "Appalled" by Puppy Mills

The chi-chi pet store where Paris Hilton and Britney Spears got their pooches says they're "horrified" and "appalled" by the possibility that their dogs might've come from a puppy mill, but stopped short of admitting that that's where they came from.

In a statement issued to TMZ, Pets of Bel Air says that it would "never knowingly buy a dog from a puppy mill," as the Humane Society of the United States has alleged. Pets of Bel Air also says that "to the best of our knowledge," all the puppies are from approved breeders. As for its permit to sell animals, which had expired, the shop says it was a clerical error that allowed it to expire. They've provided TMZ with the renewed permit.

For the statement in full, read after the jump.

Pet store: Click to watchDear Customers, Friends and Neighbors,

We are horrified by the recent video released by the Humane Society of the United States showing footage of puppy mills. We do not condone puppy mills; we would never knowingly buy a dog from a puppy mill; and we are appalled by the possibility that this may have happened. We are investigating all of our sources so that we continue to nurture the finest and most reputable dogs from the best breeders, a practice that we've held central to our business since we opened nine years ago.

To the best of our knowledge, our beautiful puppies purchased out-of –state are from USDA approved pet breeders. We rely on our governmental agency to be sure that these breeders are inspected. All of our puppies are given health checks by our store veterinarian when they become part of our family and before joining their new families. Our puppies are all sold with a health warranty, and are not available to go home to their new families until they have been cleared by a veterinarian.

It has been brought to our attention that our permit to sell animals has expired and we have remedied this issue. The permit fee went inadvertently unpaid due to a clerical error. Upon completion of an inspection by Animal Services, which is scheduled for Thursday, Pets of Bel Air will reopen.

Pets of Bel Air has been a trusted neighborhood business for many years. Every employee at Pets of Bel Air is an animal lover, as evidenced by the care and love we show our puppies and kittens each day; the healthy environment we provide; and the respect we show each of you. We continue to be a community pet store you can trust.

Thank you for your continued support.

Pets of Bel Air

UPDATE: The HSUS issued TMZ the following response: "The Humane Society of the United States' investigation makes it clear that Pets of Bel Air puppies came from puppy mills. The store's claim of ignorance just doesn't measure up: they made absolute assurances to their customers of the sources of their puppies - noting specifically on their website that their "babies come from private breeders". These claims are typical of slick pet store sales techniques - and Pets of Bel Air would have kept on making them if not for The HSUS' investigation.

They also can't deny the confessions of their store staff about the health of the animals, and their description of how they mislead customers.

Pets of Bel Air claims they set the standard for the pet store industry - that's exactly our fear. Pets of Bel Air's deceitful tactics are standard fare in pet stores across the nation. The pet store industry knowingly supports the cruel and reckless business of puppy mills. The HSUS will continue to work tirelessly to shine a spotlight on this indefensible abuse and let the public know how to avoid supporting it themselves."

77. Hey, #7 You're full of it! Peta does not put down dogs, are you crazy? Puppy Mill don't care about their dogs at all, they are just products that make money. If it's true that you got these wonderful healthy dogs from a dog mill (which I don't believe at all) than you're lucky. More than likely you just haven't found out how sick they are yet. You will.

78. I bought a puppy from this store - didn't really know about it's reputation. He is a Great Pyrennes - the puppy had full blown pneumonia and spent a week at the vet. I went back and got them to refund all the money for both the dog and the vet. I kept the dog. Though a sweetie-pie the dog has been a mess from the beginning. Displaxia, car sickness, one thing after another - we love him - but that pet store should be shut down.

79. As one who bred English Mastiffs for 2 years, I say this: go to a breeder who has a website with their physical address on it. Contact the breeder when you are about 20 yards away from their front door and tell them you are in the neighborhood and interested in buying a puppy. If they wont let you drop by on the spot to see both parents, their housing and socialize with the pups and the parents, save your money and if the conditions are bad, report the breeder. Make the breeder give you references (ask to see a sheet with their akc sales on it- all breeders are required to maintain this list) and also get the name of the vet the breeder uses. Then contact them (and the closest other vets in the area) for a reference as to the health of the parents and pups the breeder brings in for shots.
Call them out on it before you buy!

80. #7 and #19, aka ATTENTION WHORE(S) USING ALL CAPS:

First, I rarely read ALL CAPS and when I do, I skim them because it always comes from morons with weak arguments that think typing in ALL CAPS will make it stronger.

Secondly, pet shops, pet brokers, pet breeders and pet mills are all different. There is also a big difference in a "backyard breeder", a responsible breeder and the breeders that border on being puppy mills. So, lumping them all together just shows your ignorance and lack of attention to detail about where you get your pets.

Backyard breeders often think they can make some money on their pet by producing and selling some of it's offspring. They don't usually bother getting the heart, hip, eye, etc tests recommended for that specific breed and often breed animals that have some innate disposition problems. The same can go for professional breeders, so buyer beware.

A truly reputable breeder will be able to produce test results/clearances by good vets and it is even better if you can see the parents on site (at least the mother) to get an idea of disposition.

The worst part of your RANTS were in bashing pounds, SPCAs, shelters and rescues. Yes, some of them are poorly run , but definitely not all and they are worth checking into first. If they have home inspection rules, it is only for the benefit of the adoptees, so they are not going to bad situations or puppy mills. The adoption fees are not high, as they are helping offset the costs of SAVING ANIMALS. Generally, if they are over $50 or so, they include things like shots, spay/neuter and sometimes even 6 months worth of heartworm prevention pills. Just ask.

I have been very active in several shelters and rescues and we often got purebreeds, some even had their papers turned in by their prior owner. Most people that adopt these pets find they have an especially wonderful pet that is grateful for their new happy home and pays you back with many years of special love.

81. Those who shop at pet stores are no better than the puppy mill breeders who disguistingly raise and breed these pets. I recommend that before you defend a pet store or you buy from a pet store you go to youtube and watch a video of pets being put in a gas chamber and killed. Or go down to your local shelter and watch your pets' littermates being put to sleep. All of the pets in shelters had to come from somewhere and your local backyard breeder and pet shops are one of the main reasons for euthanasia. Do some research and grow a heart before you go on a rampage about your chihuahuas or some other designer dog! And always SPAY AND NEUTER!!!!!

82.
68. And the AKC and the UKC register PUPPY MILL PUPPIES

They too make a fast buck off the ignorant who think that "papers" prove anything
or are some kind of status symbol

Suckers get suckered by the AKC and UKC

Posted at 9:56PM on Dec 12th 2007 by Lori

Actually the AKC and UKC are legitimate registries. It's the CKC (not the Canadian one, thats also legitimate) and other small places that puppy mills use. But let's make it clear again that papers mean nothing. Some times people even fake the papers.

A dog with papers from AKC/UKC can still be a product of BYB's. Papers only mean that they can trace the sire and dam lines back. Woohoo who cares. It's the health testing that REALLY matters. Hearts, hips, knees, etc.

People who want to buy from breeders should do their homework and find legitimate breeders, who health test, and show their dogs, and whose dogs have titles & championships to prove it.

Being registered and having a nice coat color DOES NOT cut it anymore. Look at how many dogs are put to sleep each year because of pet overpopulation.

84. Oh, they had no idea? Not that I believe it, but I'll make it real simple for them. ANY breeder who doesn't sell directly to the new owner isn't responsible and is either a backyard breeder or a puppymill. NO breeder who puts in the time, effort and money to produce dogs of good health, temperament and type would sell to them. Period. Responsible breeders want to know where their puppies go, because it's not about profit...rather lives. These are not shoes...

85. #74 PETA certainly does put down dogs and cats (among other animals), including healthy and adoptable ones. They have a very poor adoption vs euthanasia record. Completely unnecessary and sickening, with their money and power. They are also against no/low kill shelters. Here are some links and a quote:

Why does PETA kill? “In 2000, when the Associated Press first noted PETA’s Kervorkian-esque tendencies, PETA president Ingrid Newkirk complained that actually taking care of animals costs more than killing them. ‘We could become a no-kill shelter immediately,’ she admitted.”

86. I shop at these stores and know the employees very well. I do not believe the staff would knowingly buy from puppy mills. Most are honest and ethical people. I agree that the practice of the puppy mills is inhumane and should be stopped, but pointing the finger at Pets of Bel Aire just because of their clientel is wrong. These animal rights groups knew that if they attacked Pets of Bel Aire, they would make some noise and they did. Now that your cause is out in the open, go after those that really are responsible and make a difference.

87. I used to shop there for cat food and toys and I can guarantee I will NEVER shop there again! These stores need to all be shut down. The cruelty that goes on in Puppy/Kitten mills should not be supported and if we all stop buying puppies/kittens and accessories from these stores they eventually will shut down and the mills will be shut down themselves from no income.

I wish there was a law that could shut down the mills/stores of these cruel and inhuman people. You should look up on the HSUS website and listen to what goes on in a puppy mill and how they torture these animals to death (Either beating them to death or starving them) at the age of five (if they're lucky to live that long) because they can no longer produce more litters. Do you think this is right?
And don't think buying a puppy that came from a puppy mill is "saving them" - you are just in turn supporting the mill and giving it money to keep producing these innocent animals. I made that mistake with my kitten (my first pet), and although she is a loving, wonderful pet, and I could never see myself without her in my life, I had the unfortunate experience of watching something similar to an epileptic attack happen to her at the age of 8 months. Luckily she is okay, but she ended up not being able to close her eye fully and not moving one of her ears. This was all due to the fact that she came from a kitten mill and her genes were not like those of a proper breeding facility animal.

I will NEVER ever buy another animal in a pet store to support what these disgusting freaks of nature are doing, and neither should YOU.

88. What kind of morons are you??? They aren't pointing to Pets of bel air because of their clientele! If you all think that TMZ is false, then why don't you watch the local news you fools! The HSUS did a whole research and undercover investigation - it doesn't get better than that!

Everyone who will continue to shop at ANY store that supports puppy mills need to go back to school and learn a few things. I can't believe that such idiots and inhuman people live in this country. Boy, I so happy I'm not an American right now so I don't get classified with you fools.

89. It makes absolutely no difference how "healthy" or "beautiful" these pups or. Or that every employee of this pet store is an "animal lover". USDA approved breeders ARE puppy mills!! And the concern is not for the pups who end up in the homes of the rich and famous; the concern is for the miserable existence led by the parents of these pups who live out each day in squalor, breeding litter after litter, being sold at auctions and, finally, mercifully, dying young.

Posted at 6:12AM on Dec 13th 2007 by animal lover

90. All pet shops buy from brokers who who buy from commercial (puppymill) breeders licensed by USDA. It is illegal for them to to do otherwise and no reputable breeder ever sells to a pet shop. All those cute little pups the stars are carrying around came right out of Missouri puppymills. If you don't want to support the Missouri puppymill business go the AKC website, link up with the parent club of that breed, and find a hobby breeder near you where you can see the surroundings and parents.
I've been to the dog auctions where the parents of these pups are bought and sold and if you want to see real misery come see that! They go on every weekend here.
