Pet Store "Horrified" and "Appalled" by Puppy Mills

The chi-chi pet store where Paris Hilton and Britney Spears got their pooches says they're "horrified" and "appalled" by the possibility that their dogs might've come from a puppy mill, but stopped short of admitting that that's where they came from.

In a statement issued to TMZ, Pets of Bel Air says that it would "never knowingly buy a dog from a puppy mill," as the Humane Society of the United States has alleged. Pets of Bel Air also says that "to the best of our knowledge," all the puppies are from approved breeders. As for its permit to sell animals, which had expired, the shop says it was a clerical error that allowed it to expire. They've provided TMZ with the renewed permit.

Pet store: Click to watchDear Customers, Friends and Neighbors,

We are horrified by the recent video released by the Humane Society of the United States showing footage of puppy mills. We do not condone puppy mills; we would never knowingly buy a dog from a puppy mill; and we are appalled by the possibility that this may have happened. We are investigating all of our sources so that we continue to nurture the finest and most reputable dogs from the best breeders, a practice that we've held central to our business since we opened nine years ago.

To the best of our knowledge, our beautiful puppies purchased out-of –state are from USDA approved pet breeders. We rely on our governmental agency to be sure that these breeders are inspected. All of our puppies are given health checks by our store veterinarian when they become part of our family and before joining their new families. Our puppies are all sold with a health warranty, and are not available to go home to their new families until they have been cleared by a veterinarian.

It has been brought to our attention that our permit to sell animals has expired and we have remedied this issue. The permit fee went inadvertently unpaid due to a clerical error. Upon completion of an inspection by Animal Services, which is scheduled for Thursday, Pets of Bel Air will reopen.

Pets of Bel Air has been a trusted neighborhood business for many years. Every employee at Pets of Bel Air is an animal lover, as evidenced by the care and love we show our puppies and kittens each day; the healthy environment we provide; and the respect we show each of you. We continue to be a community pet store you can trust.

Thank you for your continued support.

Pets of Bel Air

UPDATE: The HSUS issued TMZ the following response: "The Humane Society of the United States' investigation makes it clear that Pets of Bel Air puppies came from puppy mills. The store's claim of ignorance just doesn't measure up: they made absolute assurances to their customers of the sources of their puppies - noting specifically on their website that their "babies come from private breeders". These claims are typical of slick pet store sales techniques - and Pets of Bel Air would have kept on making them if not for The HSUS' investigation.

They also can't deny the confessions of their store staff about the health of the animals, and their description of how they mislead customers.

Pets of Bel Air claims they set the standard for the pet store industry - that's exactly our fear. Pets of Bel Air's deceitful tactics are standard fare in pet stores across the nation. The pet store industry knowingly supports the cruel and reckless business of puppy mills. The HSUS will continue to work tirelessly to shine a spotlight on this indefensible abuse and let the public know how to avoid supporting it themselves."

92. it should be pointed out that not ALL petstores are bad either. I worked at Petco for 4 years in high school, petco doesn't have dogs and cats for sale, they bring in dogs and cats from shelters around the area to be adopted. The guinea pigs and rabbits were brought in from a REPUTABLE breeder from the local area (I have been to the house myself). As for the fish, reptiles, and mice and rats, I don't know where they came from. Also, around easter no bunnies are sold because of dumb people who buy them for the sake of having one around easter and then give them back because they poop all over the place or stink or whatever (obviously having done no research before picking up their easter bunny) . In addition, 2 or 3 times a year, Petco asks for small amounts of money from their customers when they make purchases to support local no kill shelters in the area.
As for sandmans comment, i think that is the most ridiculous argument i've ever heard in my entire life. ignorance is bliss, right?
And if shelters are "disgusting and filthy" and whatever else, could it possibly be that its because people are spending thousands of dollars for petstore puppies, and not supporting local animal shelters? surely not! they just must HATE dogs and are only in it for the money. (eye roll)
This being said, don't buy dogs and cats from pet stores, do check out animal shelters.

93. I stopped reading all these comments after the third page and decided that half of you need to stop believing what you read in Peta and elsewhere. I'm sure there are puppy mills that are bad, just like there are pet stores that are bad (I lived in a town where they threw the animals out in black trash bags). However, I bought my puggle from a puppy mill and I have to tell you, she was perfect. She came with her records from the vet, she had exams and puppy shots. I looked at our adoption agencys and after the hassel I had with my cat, forget it. Plus they were hundreds of dollars more than the puppy mill. Puppy mills, pet stores are going to be around becuase people refuse to pay the outrageous prices from breeders, they are scams. Plus, there are no guarantees that there puppies are any better. I love my baby girl and she was examined by my vet the day I got her, she is a perfect healthy puggle.

94. As an actualy breeder of dogs, a private breeder, I can attest to the fact, that never have I sold any of my puppies to a pet store. Every single one of the breeders I know, and there are plenty......would never even consider selling to a pet store. We handle the sales of our puppies ourselves.

95. Oh RIGHT!!! A responsible pet store's ownership would go to great lengths to PROVE their animals didn't come from puppy mills. I'm sure their puppies DID, but even if they didn't ignorance is no excuse. They're certainly not very bright.

96. Responsible breeders are emotionally attached to their dogs and would NEVER allow their girl's offspring to suffer in a pet store! Oftentimes the stud dog's owner has specific requirements as to what kind of homes their boy's offspring will be placed in, also.... People, THINK when you buy a dog. If you see a situation that you wouldn't put your beloved dogs puppies in (if they had puppies), then the puppies you're seeing didn't come from a loving, responsible person.... All by themselves, without their littermates, without their mommy? That's the result of a puppymill!!!!!

97. To the person who 'proudly' bought their dog from a pet store is one of the reasons why these stores are still around. I will always get my dogs fromt he humane Society, since these dogs desperately need loving homes. My toy poodle came from the shelter and did have some medical problems, but those were caused because of inbreeding on the side of the breeder who was only out to make a buck. My baby is now healthy and happy, and I will forever be glad that I was able to rescue her.

98. Jenny, the AKC is tricking you and many others.

The AKC IS in the puppy mill business. They get 80 percent of their income from puppy mill registrations.

They have a business arrangement with Hunte Corporation in Missouri, the notorious puppy mill broker who sells puppies from some of the most horrible mills in the country.

This is how the AKC pays the bills for dog shows and everything else while they con the public into thinking that they "care" about dogs. Nothing legitimate about the AKC or any registry.

It's a money game.

99. *************** BEYOND HORRIFIC !!!!!!!!! ****************

AS IF IT WASN'T BAD ENOUGH.........the way these poor animals are transported from these
"Puppy FACTORIES" is abhorrent. I spoke with a local undercover animal welfare agent not too long ago. He told me that puppies are trucked in semi tractor tailors WITH NO VENTILATION, TEMPERATURES REACHING THE UNBEARABLE (BOTH SWELTERING AND FREEZING.) They transport BOTH the SICK and "NOT SICK" (I can't use the word "healthy" - NONE of these puppies are truly healthy.) When the puppies arrive at one of their destinations (a place like" Belaire Pets") they are picked over by the store owner and the ones who are VISIBLY sick are left in the semi to endure the rest of the trip and the long haul back to the "puppy mill" they came from. THIS HAS GOT TO STOP!

The next time you're driving down the highway and see an un-marked semi truck, just think.....it's cargo could be suffering, crying, sickly, over-heated puppies.

Until people speak up and demand that their State legislature make it illegal in ALL states to operate puppy mills and to transport across state lines, this nightmare will continue.

I will tell you that virtually NO REPUTABLE dog breeder would supply puppies to these pet stores. The best breeders care about their breeds and would never have their bitches produce enough puppies to keep these places in business. It's just not done.

101. Complete BS. They know exactly where there dogs come from.

102. I understand the tragedy of puppy mills, but FORCING people to only rescue dogs is unconstitutional and unamerican. What's next? We target the problem of orphans in America and say people can ONLY adopt now and can't have your own kids? Everyone has their own choice and right to choose what to buy or what not to buy. People should be educated and try to rescue a dog, but forcing people?? I can't agree with that. Most of the high-end luxury brands people enjoy are mostly from sweatshops with 6 year old girls working there from third world countries. That to me, is inhumane.

103. #102 - no one is forcing you to do anything. Apparently you don't care that your puppy's parents are starved, mistreated, neglected and basically cast aside when they can't produce anymore (or worse). Continuing to even buy collars or leashes from stores that sell pets of ANY KIND - including birds, fish, reptiles - allows them to continue to fund puppy/kitten mills. Do you understand just how many dogs and cats their are currently languishing in shelters waiting to be euthanized? Do you understand that doing your research and only buying from reputable breeders - who WILL do a home check and who WILL ensure that their pet-quality puppies are placed in a reputable home - will end a lot of the suffering? Owning a dog or cat is NOT A RIGHT - it's a privilege. Just because you have the money to buy your "puggle" or "labradoodle" (aka mutts) doesn't mean you should.

104. If you can't see the parents of the puppy, especially the mother, and the place where the puppy came from........it was a puppy mill. Some so-called rescues buy nill pups and resell them at a profit. DON'T buy pups over the internet either. Unfortunately this is a bonanza for Backyard Breeders and puppymills.
