Pretty Woman Pretty Peeved at Paps

You'd think that after she risked life and limb to skewer a pap for filming her children at their school, photogs would be a little more respectful of Julia Roberts.

Not so. After Roberts obliged paps with plenty of shots across the street from her NYC house -- on the condition that they leave her alone, they did quite the opposite, following and shooting her the next day at her bank, and staying on her tail for three full blocks before a bystander stepped in to act as a bodyguard.

Her last word? Julia chastised the snappers for "embarrassing" themselves.

46. I don't blame her one bit. Can't say she didn't try to be nice to them. They're going to keep it up 'til something bad happens, or stars ban together, to put a stop to it. There's no sense in taking one pic. after another. They need to show more respect .., instead..., they act like a pac of animals. They could all get up to 2 or 3 shots.. and leave, but they don't, and that's wrong. I've got a feeling they're shooting themselves in the foot. They're the ones that're going to pay, before it's over. They're overbearing!!

47. I watched this video to hear what Julia said. It is so sad to see that she allowed you to take photos with only a request to leave her alone for the rest of the day and it wasn't honored. Why wasn't one photo enough? Why did you have to stalk her? TMZ please don't act as if you were above the fray. The way you wrote the article was comical, condemning the paparazzi and all the time you were there filming her and stalking her just like the rest of them. Sadly it will most likely take someone getting hurt to pass laws against the stalking of celebrities.

50. I must say I don't understand the reasoning behind the thought process that because someone is an entertainer they are not allowed a private life and that this sort of stalking comes with the territory. Being an entertainer is a job, when they are on the job promoting a movie or product, doing a charity event, attending a premiere or awards show, that is all a part of their job. However, when they are off the job and doing what a regular citizen does they should be given the same respect that any other citizen would have. I don't know of anyone that wouldn't file charges against a man or woman that followed them everywhere and was taking pictures of their homes, children, and romantic moments with their significant other. If this were you or I we would consider the individual stalking us frightening, abnormal, and in need of psychiatric care, and the label "stalker", or "peeping Tom" would be slapped upon them. Just because someone makes a great deal of money or is an entertainer doesn't mean the public owns their whole life, or excludes them from having privacy. All an entertainer owes us, as someone on here once said, is to entertain us with their work.

51. She needs to close that ugly horse mouth and pick a different profession. Fame is something 1000's of people a year come to LA to get and Millions live there hoping t be famous. She's a complaining bitch she has tens of millions all the fame and fortune she wanted and now has.

She needs to give all her money to charity since she's not greatful and get a job at Wallmart!

52. If you make a deal with someone and comply, both parties have their needs met.

In this situation one side didn't live up to their end of the bargain. That sucks no matter who you are or what you do. You don't take advantage of someone's trust. Esp when she was trying to help them.

Know how she feels. Entrapment. I once had to have a photo of mine taken at work, did so in good faith only to realize I was about to see A Simpson morph.

53. I personally hope this burgeoning bit of anti-pap sentiment takes off. Sure, it might make sites like TMZ sweat bullets, but it is worth it in the long run. It won't stop interesting and salacious stories from happening, but it will give some measure of privacy for those in the entertainment industry who do not enjoy the rabid, privacy invading Pap Nazis! Celebs obsessed with media coverage can still get their groove on, but when it's time to go home, no one wants a camera shooting over their fence. For those who argue that all celebs want this kind of abuse, you are once again foolishly over generalizing every single person into one archetype. That is a type of thinking that is ad hominem at best ( for non Latin speakers it's means arguing to raise emotions that is not logically based- something that a large portion of posters seem to revel in). My hope is that somehow a balance between the 1st Amendment and the right to privacy is reached, but that might take an incredibly wise piece of legislation to take place; something that is also in very short supply as of late!

55. Julia Roberts is one of the few celebrities who went to the states where Katrina did the most damage to bring awareness and raise funding. I don't think she is a bad person. Why is TMZ doing this to her? What is the gripe that TMZ has with Julia Roberts? TMZ followed her around to get the story didn't they? Yet they report it here as if the photographers were wrong to follow her? TMZ should pay more attention to their blogs, ie.How can posters report inappropriate comments from other posters, voting on non-story stories (such as this one), etc.

56. I'm Just Saying, CHEERS!!! Love them or hate them, celebs like Ms. Roberts and Mr. Clooney are at least standing up for their rights, despite the bashing they will incur. Good for them!

57. I see her point. The photogs could perfectly well shoot from a distance (they have the lenses to do so) but they insist on being all in your face about it.

58. A lot of the paps are ex-cons. You can't blame her for not wanting them to photograph her children.

Posted at 5:38AM on Dec 18th 2007 by Crystal

59. In a normal world, they should and WOULD be embarrassed by their own behaviour, but the U.S. is motivated by money or moreso, greed, so appropriate feelings of embarrassment have morphed into anything for a buck, and then the paps put their 'integrity' hats back on after work sittting in the bar. That's what you call 'conditional ethics'. That money motivation is also why Ms. Roberts is so over paid, and probably a good part of why she's continued to pursue acting. Works for her, too.
If she dropped out and pursued a career teaching pre-school in Podunk, U.S.A., for 32K a year, her pap troubles would quickly and permanently disappear because they would cease to follow her around in short order. If she really wanted normal, she'd have to really embrace normal. What happens today with paps certainly doesn't seem right, but there it is.
