Officials Say No Cover-Up in Gibson Arrest

TMZ has info on the report issued by the independent panel that reviewed procedures in the Mel Gibson arrest, and the conclusion is -- no cover-up.

As you may recall, on the day of the arrest, TMZ was told by Sheriff's officials that it was "without incident." In fact, Gibson went on a rant which included an anti-semitic tirade. We obtained and published four pages of an arrest report outlining Gibson's conduct that had been removed from the official report.

In its findings, the review commission noted that the four pages included "inflammatory comments." Now here's the justification for what went down.

"Because of a concern about certain information gathered during the arrest falling prematurely into the hands of media sources and because there was no clear Departmental guidance provided on how to handle this scenario presented, supervisors made spontaneous decisions with regard to how to package the information and describe the arrest. While these decisions do not indicate a violation of department policy, and were fairly sensible, they do point out the need for creating a thoughtful and systematic approach for how to handle future similar scenarios."

The findings go on -- "The initial response from first and second level supervisors was to order that the comments be entirely stricken from the police report as unnecessary. However, before being implemented, that instruction was modified by the unit commander, who proposed that the comments not be included in the narrative of the report but that they be placed instead in a supplemental report."

Here's the upshot from the review panel: "In sum, the collection and documentation of information incident to the arrest was timely and appropriately provided to the District Attorney so that he could make appropriate charging decisions."

16. What's so pathetic are all the whiners out there who are so easily offended if something rude or ignorant is said. Most people (who are reasonably intelligent) already know when something said is just plain ignorant. It's bad enough if women whine... but MEN??? Grow up and stop being such sissies!!! There's enough really offensive stuff going on in the world today without being overly sensitive about name-calling. What REALLY offends me are people who chop off other people's heads in the name of Allah.

17. There was no cover up. We know all about it don't we?

18. Leave Mel Gibson alone! He screwed up (anyone here who hasn't?) He went to rehab. He is human. Just because you are a Christian, does not mean you are perfect. He is an awesome actor, director and producer and a good family man. I wish the paps/press would just leave the man alone.

And ya know his anti-semitic tirade is a bit understandable-Now don't freak out- I have Jewish friends, and am also a Christian-I think it IS a bit frustrating at time being one of only a few (probably less than 5) countries in the WORLD, WHO SUPPORT ISRAEL! I believe it is the right stance for the US to take, based on my faith, but supporting Israel is primarily what makes the US such a target for terrorism. Doesn't that frustrate anyone sometimes? Oh, I forgot, everone on this board is perfect.

19. Cover-up or not, anti-semitic tirades aren't illegal, and have nothing to do with reckless, drunken driving.

20. Ditto on there was no coverup. We knew about it.

Mel is cool.

21. If anyone who isn't antisemetic would simply stop for a goddamn second and listen, instead of flying off the handle when someone like Gibson presents an opinion, then such events could be dealt with in an informed way. The belief that Jews are utterly innocent and guilt free is a myth that can't forever be covered up with the Holocaust.Even the financial influence that is attributed to Jews raises many many questions in terms of it's origin and prosperity (in relation to the foundations of Jews as a society as well). Some confronted with the impact of such structures, start to ask questions of how this status was achieved, and certain powerful positions were maintained by such a small group of dispersed peoples.

22. This isn't about "fairness", this is about the Jewish community making sure we all kowtow to political correctness and never, ever to dare criticize or question their place or actions as a group in society.

How long before we end up like half of northern Europe where you can be actually jailed for criticizing or questioning anything about Jewish beliefs, politics or their history?

Of course I'll be accused of being anti-semitic for questioning anything like this but thats par-for-the-course anyhow.....

23. I'm not one to stereotype people, but I'm STARTING to suspect that the Jews are so wealthy because they are just plain smarter than the rest of us. Unfortunately, acquiring wealth is something I've never been able to achieve... at least, not yet. Excuse me if I sound NAIVE, but is there such a thing as a Jew who's NOT wealthy???

24. Do you really believe that Jews are simply smarter than the rest of us? That is one hell of a blanket statement if I haven't heard one. And it is so complimenting...Did you include Woddy Allen, or is he an exception? I guess that's all the bad Jew I can come up with...where are the others hiding? I guess they are all good people. Have yet to meet one.

25. Harvey must be softening towards Mel... TMZ actually has a pic of him up that isn't (shall we say) LESS than flattering!

26. I'm not sure that Woodey Allen is such a bad guy... how old was that Soon Yi (or whatever her name is) when he "fell in love" with her??? Maybe she was underage... I don't remember. She did seemed awfully young. But it's not like Mia was his wife or Soon Yi was his real daughter. That's beside the point... I'm sure the Jews are so successful because God promised they would be (in the Bible). I forget the passage but God says "I will bless those who bless you and I will curse those who curse you", when He was speaking to Abraham.

That comment about northern europe and being jailed for "questioning the Jew's beliefs, politics or history" is a NEW one on me. I never heard of such a thing! That sounds absurd... and sorry, but I just don't believe it.

28. Oh, I'm sure there are SOME bad Jews around... I just had one on MySpace who dumped me along with every other friend he ever had. He was a real JERK.

29. Gibson was drunk and disorderly, he made some anti Semitic remarks, what was he arrested for, the remarks? If there was a law on the books on how to handle this incident I'm sure they would have done it but since there isn't then what can they do now? This story and the details were leaked to the press by the arresting officers, isn't that against the law ? Has anyone done anything about that? No one cares if he made a drunken fool of himself, it didn't seem to hurt his career any, I went to see Apocolypto, it was great. End of story. Dawg is dining with the black leaders now so no one cares, if they can use it for their own agendas then it becomes important, Harvey Levin is Jewish, I can honestly see why he is upset over this but this is an old story, it's over.

Nothing like freedom of speech, especially when you are calling someone a train wreck or a streetwalker or worse. Some of the things said on these blogs are very hurtful and mean spirited, as long as you don't use a racist remark it's OK right? Now that's classy!

30. It's a matter of perspective, I guess. Because if your 'God' 'tells' you to slaughter entire 'cities' and appropriate their wealth (since they can't anymore anyway because they're dead...), and you make a fortune off of that....since this guidance came from "your God", it is indeed hard to refute, because varying metaphysical beliefs (aka religion) are difficult subjects to address. I don't remember what part of the Old Testament it is in, but it clearly states that the "Lord commanded his people to kill everyone" in certain cities/towns/regions- whatever they were considered...kinda evil if you ask me, especially if the preexisting cultures were non-warfaring, defenseless, pacific cultures... the origin of the Jewish tradition passed along with way too much pride. If one really wants to keep to 'an eye for an eye', one is asking for trouble, and shouldn't cry if the response is similar.
