Brit Blindsided by Phil -- Hospital Acts Curiously

TMZ has learned Dr. Phil's visit with Britney Spears was not exactly as advertised.

People on the 7th floor at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center say the doctor arrived about 7:30 AM Saturday. We're told Britney did not invite him in; she didn't even know he was coming. Sources say it was Brit's parents who told Dr. Phil to go to the hospital. When he walked into her room, we're told, a blindsided Britney walked out -- and eventually came back.

Sources say Phil tried speaking with Spears for about 15 minutes -- not an hour as Dr. Phil's press release states -- but she wanted none of it. We're told Phil was doing almost all the talking. As for walking with her to the car on her way out -- again, as his release states -- we're told if he was walking behind her, that's news to her. She absolutely was not accompanied by him.

Sources say Dr. Phil somehow convinced Brit's mom and dad to be on his show, which will tape Monday and air Tuesday (it was just moved up a day), but as one person put it, "Based on the interaction between Dr. Phil and Britney this morning, it'll be a cold day in hell before Britney goes on his show." We're told she absolutely will not appear on the program.

Sources say Dr. Phil wants to do a television intervention, something that isn't sitting well with some of the people who have known for a while that Britney has a very serious mental condition -- likely a bipolar disorder that is now in the red zone.

TMZ contacted Cedars to find out why the hospital let a television doctor on a floor that has such fragile patients, particularly since Britney had no idea he was coming. It's especially troublesome that Cedars let Dr. Phil go uninvited to Britney's room, since she had already been discharged and presumably had a right to know if someone wanted to visit. A Cedars rep made it short and sweet, telling us, "No comment."

A rep from the "Dr. Phil" show had no comment as well, other than "Dr. Phil met with Ms. Spears at family members' invitation."

18. I don't think Dr Phil is trying to "cash" on her probs....I think he want's to help her and I'll bet that TMZ is trying to screw w/ the whole story b/c THEY DON'T WANT HER TO GET HELP OR GET BETTER!!!!!! Then what the hell would all their little paps do all day? No other celebrity would tolerate their anyyoying BS.........they wouldn't have anyone to stalk anymore!

19. Dr. Phil is Dr. Phil, a media whore. It had to be brutal for the parents to give in to making this a public intervention. Either they had tried to intervene many times privately (obviously without success) and this is basically as a major cry for help. Its scary to see how far this has gone. Britney turned out to be someone who was allowed to fall apart and spiral out of control in front of the world to gawk at and criticize - talk about being alone.

23. Has Dr. Phil really ever helped anyone.. besides make housewives boring home life feel less boring......
He only has helped himself... boost ratings, gain celebrity status, all while conning people into sharing there inner most private affairs on national TV...

Good work TMZ on this story...

24. Damn, Britney should sue the hospital for allowing this fame whore to walk in on her. If her parents invited him to go see her, then they are sicker than Britney is. What a bunch of bloodsuckers!

25. I think the last thing Britney needs is more media spotlight, including the attentions of a TV psychologist whose own motives here aren't really clear. If he's not interested in exploiting her, then why even give any interviews to the press about what he did/said while he was there (or even why he was there, for that matter)? Her parents' judgment is obviously way out of whack, but I would've expected better from a supposed mental healthcare "professional".

26. What if the world is wrong with her family???? Calling in an entertainer who makes money from people's problems. Even Brit in her state of mind would know not to talk to him........or it would all wind up on his program. His ego is so big...why would he think he could do something the specialists at Cedars could not? The are psychiatrists.

As for letting her be discharged, the hospital has to follow the law and it says if ia person is decleared no longer a danger to themselves or others, then they cannot be held against their will. This law protects all of us. Unless the patient is a danger to themselves or others they cannot be forced to take treatment. Sad.....but that is the way it is. Mental Illness is so complicated. My heart goes out to Britney. Most people would have this as a private moment in their lives. Her breakdown is plastered all over the news and not only that people are willing to exploit the situation for money. How will she ever get help with being famous and never knowing who will sell her out? This is sad beyond belief.

27. what a sick sick man Dr. Phil is. He's not in it for Britney's best interest. He's in it for the ratings.

Her mom is in it for the $$$. So sad. (sigh)

30. "It's especially troublesome that Cedars let Dr. Phil go uninvited to Britney's room, since she had already been discharged and presumably had a right to know if someone wanted to visit."
What a load of crap TMZ - quite possibly the most illogical statement ever made on your website. As Britney had already been discharged, as you state, she is no longer the responsibility of the hospital and the nurses are NOT required to announce visitors like they were butlers. The hospital would not regulate who ANYONE talked to who was NOT a patient. Britney made the decision not to be under the protective wing of Cedars-Sinai - it was no longer up to them to screen her visitors. A little more thought and logic in the future might be nice, TMZ, before issuing assinine statements such as this.
