Brit Blindsided by Phil -- Hospital Acts Curiously

1/6/2008 11:00 AM PST BY TMZ STAFF

TMZ has learned Dr. Phil's visit with Britney Spears was not exactly as advertised.

People on the 7th floor at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center say the doctor arrived about 7:30 AM Saturday. We're told Britney did not invite him in; she didn't even know he was coming. Sources say it was Brit's parents who told Dr. Phil to go to the hospital. When he walked into her room, we're told, a blindsided Britney walked out -- and eventually came back.

Sources say Phil tried speaking with Spears for about 15 minutes -- not an hour as Dr. Phil's press release states -- but she wanted none of it. We're told Phil was doing almost all the talking. As for walking with her to the car on her way out -- again, as his release states -- we're told if he was walking behind her, that's news to her. She absolutely was not accompanied by him.

Sources say Dr. Phil somehow convinced Brit's mom and dad to be on his show, which will tape Monday and air Tuesday (it was just moved up a day), but as one person put it, "Based on the interaction between Dr. Phil and Britney this morning, it'll be a cold day in hell before Britney goes on his show." We're told she absolutely will not appear on the program.

Sources say Dr. Phil wants to do a television intervention, something that isn't sitting well with some of the people who have known for a while that Britney has a very serious mental condition -- likely a bipolar disorder that is now in the red zone.

TMZ contacted Cedars to find out why the hospital let a television doctor on a floor that has such fragile patients, particularly since Britney had no idea he was coming. It's especially troublesome that Cedars let Dr. Phil go uninvited to Britney's room, since she had already been discharged and presumably had a right to know if someone wanted to visit. A Cedars rep made it short and sweet, telling us, "No comment."

A rep from the "Dr. Phil" show had no comment as well, other than "Dr. Phil met with Ms. Spears at family members' invitation."

Say what you will about Dr. Phil - but he has a popular show, two well-adjusted children, a beautiful wife and stable marriage. He's not in the tabloids, rehab or racking up DUI's. So, he's trying to land the most talked about celebrity on this show? Is he exploiting her? I guess so, but she's done a great job of doing that herself. I just find it amusing that finally someone tries to help her - and yes I know its not completely selfless - everyone jumps all over him. At this point, I say put her on the show, get everything out in the open and let the chips fall where they may.

83. Why on earth would Cedars let that quack onto the floor at all? He doesn't even have a license to treat patients, and it is against the law to release information on anyone held on the psych floor. In those situations, the hospital can't even confirm or deny whether they are there. You definitely can't see a psych patient unless they have placed you on their approved visitor list, and nobody is allowed visitors in the first 24 hours.

There is therefore something very wrong with this picture. Did quack-boy tell the hospital that he is her therapist? I cannot imagine any other reason why they'd let him in to see her that soon, and without her specific consent.

As stated, Britney had been discharged and was no longer a patient. She was no longer under the purview of Cedars-Sinai. Dr. Phil didn't need to be on the approved visitors list - she wasn't a patient. He was asked to speak with her by her family, that does not equal treatment. Her family could ask the janitor to speak with her and try to convince her to get help if they thought it would help and the janitor wouldn't require a license or privileges to do so.

#78 Patty.....drugs are not the end all....but they are necessary for people with major mental illness. Their brains have a chemical imbalance. The drugs alleviate some of the problems caused by that imbalance making it possible for them to receive counselling and have it mean something. As for giving advice...well anyone can do that. Counselling is not giving advice, but helping someone help themselves to change what they can in their lives. A psychologist can do that.

He's that overly optimistic never-stops-smiling minister. He wrote a book, I think it's called Your Best Life Now.

I feel sorry for Britney. Yes, she's a nut, etc. But Dr. Phil of a press-hog looking for any excuse to get himself on the news. When it is all over Britney will just have been used and not helped. Dr. Phil simplifies everything ab adsurdum. His psychiatry is targeted at morons and not real people. Britney is an adult. Her family had no authority whatsoever to ask Dr. Phi to help her. It's Britney's call or the Court's call.. Besides the Court has already ordered her to be examined. If that has not been finished yet, Dr. Phil could end up at the end of a contempt citation. But, Dr. Phil is working for Dr. Phil - not Briitney.

Just another reason why I DETEST Dr. Phil, and I use the term "DR." lightly. He's just an attention grabbing, wannabe, ratings grabbing piece of crap phony! If he really knew what he was talking about, he wouldn't have bothered Britney due to her most fragile mental status right now. BUT, he only cares about himself...AS USUAL! BOYCOTT DR. PHIL'S SHOW - IT SUCKS AND SO DOES HE!

Shame on Dr. Phil. He should know that her state of mind is seriously unstable right now, and the last thing she needs is to have her story told on his show! Doesn't he realize like the rest of the world that the media and paparazzi have already taken a toll on this poor girl. She needs private help out of the public's view. If her parents appear on the show, they are making their worst mistake yet. I know they are desperate to get her help, but the mother does seem to have money at the top of her list. I don't know what the answer is, but she needs to be evaluated, diagnosed, and treated before Dr. Phil makes a spectacle out of her. If her parents go on the show, she will never speak to them again.

She needs all the help she can get. Although, I wonder if Dr Phil is doing this only because of ratings and not to get Brittany well.

Dear god. Having dealt with bipolar disorder myself, I'm sure that a "television intervention" is about the LAST thing she needs right now. Dr Phil is NOT a psychiatrist and his specialty is NOT treating people with actual mental disorders. Giving self-help advice is not the same thing as treating a real disorder. He needs to butt the hell out before he triggers her into doing something truly dangerous to herself or others - possibly in front of his own cameras. I can't imagine what would have happened if I'd been stuck on a talk show during one of my dissociative episodes caused by my BD.
