Dr. Phil to "ET" -- The Family Speared Me

Dr. Phil responded to the TMZ stories reporting that psychiatric professionals questioned Cedars permitting the TV doc into Britney Spears' hospital room without her prior knowledge or consent.

Here's what he said about his visit on Saturday morning on today's "Early Show": "I want to set the record straight. I went to see Britney at the request of her family. I talked to Lynne, Jamie, and Brian, because they were frustrated that she wasn't going to be held for a longer time."

Asked how he had come to be involved in the saga, Dr. Phil said, "Thursday night, the phone rang, it was Lynne, clearly she was very upset. Any parent would be. I was first contacted by her family a year ago, and had maintained a running dialogue for the last year or so."

211. Whatever

See, the thing is when you deal with someone who is mentally ill, they don't trust anything or anybody. You have to actively work to gain their trust. In Britney's situation, it's 10fold because she is a Pop Star. This means that she has been building up her defenses for years - well before she was struck with whatever mental illness she now has. So you couple that with the natural paranoia of a mental illness, you have a tough situation.

So, say Dr. P did go to see her and did say, "We don't have to do a show about you. I just want to help you. I won't talk to the press about our conversations..." etc etc, But then, when he doesn't get the result he wants, he goes to the media with a press release and sits down with ET.... And, as far as I know, he still plans to do a show about her, even if she isn't there. Wouldn't that be contradictory? Wouldn't that hamper him from "helping" her in the future?

I'm just saying that what he is saying and what he is doing is two different things, imo. He claims to just want to help her, but people who are mentally ill don't like others knowing it. They are ashamed of it, so him talking at all to the media won't gain him her trust at all...

212. Oh, I see Phil- you were just there at the behest of the famiy, huh?

Then you really didn't have a show in the works, ready to air Tuesday?

You really didn't have a press release prepared BEFORE you went to the hospital?

Phil, what we really don't understand is why you are such a poor liar, given how frequently you practice it........

Oh, and just to clear up the confusion- Phil is an ENTERTAINER- he hold no licence to practice therapy of ANY kind in ANY state- which is why this hospital very much should be held liable.........

Oh wait- are they letting Jerry Springer into the cardio care unit on Wed?

213. It is not up her parents or her brother to send Dr. Phil to speak with her. Britney is an adult and it is up to her to seek help for herself. Obviously she thinks she doesn't need it. Eventually she will end up either in a hospital or like Anna Nicole. Hope she does seek treatment soon, but at a private facility out of the limelight.

214. Anita and DeeDee I understand what your saying. Britneys family were only doing what they thought was right. Dr.Phil said because his wife and Lynne were friends, he was asked to come. Right or wrong, he did not disclose the conversation. Now she is going to have to seek treatment to see her kids. You sound just like my friend j, both of you.

215. Hey dummies! Britney's family ASKED Dr. Phil to get involved. Be sure of your facts before you spew your garbage about someone you probably know very little about!

216. I sort of doubt that Britney even spoke with Dr. P, Whatever. I say that because she was avoiding him and he was there 15 minutes. Of course, that could all be rumors/lies. But, ::shrug:: I just don't think that Dr. Phil has her best interest at heart.

217. I hear you Dee, but I do think he is genuine. Nice to have a debate without hate.

218. I just want to throw this out there since so many people are saying it's not up to her parents to do this...

When I had to admit my brother to the hospital (he was over 18 at the time - an adult) the hospital gave him the option to sign a consent form that allowed me to be kept up to date on his condition and to talk to his doctors, etc etc.... It's POSSIBLE that Britney signed a form like that when she was admitted. I don't know one way or another if she did, but if she did I think that in that case it would have been okay for them to allow him to see her. As much as I know the desperation of helping a loved one who is sick, I question the intelligence of her family. I don't get them.

As a so called "Doctor" (fake or otherwise) he should know better than to blind side her like that. If he was a real doctor with no fame, it may have been a lot different. Just because someone is mentally ill, it doesn't mean that they are ignorant.

Also, to Whatever... nice chatting with you too. It's hard to get me to sling mud at fellow posters. I don't find that entertaining. ;p

219. Whatever.

He's in entertainment and she's in entertainment, so that alone is a "3 ring circus". He made a press release because TMZ and other faux media were making comments about things they didn't know about. And he didn't do an intervention in front of cameras. He didn't bring the camera with him. It's her family that continues to call him for help. As far as going to a courthouse, how do YOU know they haven't?

220. He's not a "fake" doctor you idiots. He truly has a PhD in psychology.

221. Have a good one Dee.

222. Dr. Phil should never have been involved. Like the Doc states at the beginning of these comments, Brit is an adult and not a dependent. Her rights were violated. I have a mentally ill brother and he has many rights including to meet with who he chooses - he even has a right to approve who meets with his doctors and Dr. Phil is NOT a medical doctor to boot!

223. Who cares if TMZ is saying whatever TMZ is saying??? If it is a matter between helping her or "setting the record straight" on entertainment shows, I think he should have stuck to helping her. Eff TMZ. Eff ET. Seriously, it's not like he HAS to speak to them.

==========================================
Well, therein lies the rub. Determining whether an individual is capable of making the best decisions for themselves when their actions seem chronically abnormal long term and like an ever increasing cry for help is a lengthy and complicated process. Cedars let her go this time, but perhaps some who know her well feel she is still in a mess of trouble. Her parents know her and love her, and if they wanted someone to talk to her even though and perhaps because the hospital let her go, they can certainly try.

225. What kind of doctor is he in real life?
