Skating Champ Bowman Found Dead in Motel

A former U.S. figure skating champ, Christopher "The Showman" Bowman, 40, was found dead yesterday in a motel room -- and cops say the cause may be a drug overdose.
Chris Bowman
Bowman was found by a friend on Thursday morning at a Budget Inn in North Hills, Calif., according to cops. His mother, Joyce, told the Detroit Free Press, "He just passed away in his sleep. His friend told me that he was fine. He just went to bed and didn't wake up."

As a skater, Bowman was known for his showmanship. He skated in the Olympics in 1988 and 1992. He had previously been in treatment for drug problems.

21. His skating was awesome...What a shame. To end up in a motel in the one of the least desirable ares of the
San Fernando Vally... Just goes to show what drugs do to you.

22. I was taking my family to the annual skating shows when he was one of the stars on ice and I am saddened to hear of his passing. It really does seem like yesterday when he was a champion, and it really is too soon for him to be gone. My condolences to his family.

24. I JUST WATCHED SOME OF HIS SKATING VIDEOS ON YOUTUBE.........."Bowman the Showman" was a phenomenal skater.

What a sad ending to a very talented, but obviously trouble person. It's tragic to picture him dying alone, drug o.d. or not, in a flea bag hotel in his home town. I wonder if any of his skating budddies - and they were some big names like Brian Boitano, Scotty Hamilton, Browning, to name a few - ever tried to reach out to him over the years.

Sad, very sad.

25. He was a great skater back in the early 80's but he was never consistent and sabotaged himself all the time.

29. How sad. He was one of my favorite skaters back in the day. I can't believe how different he looks. It amazes me how people who have talents, money, and advantages others don't, waste it on drugs. What a shame.

BTW, yes he was also a child actor. Tons of commercials, Little House (2 episodes, 2 different characters), 2 episodes of Archie Bunker's Place, and stunts in a couple of movies including Lost Boys. He just played in a new movie that hasn't even come out yet. All you have to do is look up his bio and you'll see.
