Martha's Dishes Made My Kids Sick!

A Pennsylvania couple is suing Martha Stewart Living and K-Mart, claiming the domestic diva's "Everyday" dinnerware -- with the lovely name "Flowers and Buds Border" -- contains lead and is responsible for poisoning their children. Get the lead out!

In the lawsuit, filed on behalf of their two kids Michael and Matthew, Sandra and Raymond Dombroski allege the boys were poisoned by lead in the dinnerware, which caused the boys to suffer "mental, emotional and cognitive impairment, learning disability" as well as speech problems and physical impairment and a host of other problems. That's not a good thing!

Flowers and Buds dishesThe Dombroskis say that the lead problem is a result of "negligent, reckless, intentional and outrageous conduct of MSLO..." (that's Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia), and they've served up a heaping lawsuit asking for compensatory and punitive damages.

A spokesperson for MSLO told TMZ "We take consumer product safety very seriously. We do not comment on pending litigation."

46. I think this is a great story and I wish them luck. I have plates that have 47,900 PPM's of lead when the "acceptable" amount is 600 ppm's. Forty-seven thousand, nine hundred vs six hundred.

This is a nation wide problem that has really fallen through the cracks. They do not limit the amount of lead that can be in dishes and there will be no recalls. There are no laws being broken.

Here is a story you may want to check out.

BTW, my dishes are Debbie Mumm Spring Bouquet. It is a scary situation.

47. Oh come on!! Tell me they've actually traced this back to the dishes they've been eating on for how long? And where are all the other people that have been contaminated with these poisoness dishes? Should be an interesting case to prove - I hope they have a good lawyer. Geoffrey Fieger, where are you when we need you?

48. "This is a nation wide problem that has really fallen through the cracks."

For those who pay attention, lead in dishes is old news. Ever hear of Fiesta Ware? Ever hear of Italian majolica?

The only "crack" involved is stupid people who will buy anything and everything, regardless of whether it was produced by some of the most amoral and disgusting people on the planet (the Chinese) or not. Do a little reading and learn about what they are doing to their own country, all in the name of "progress." They are gleefully polluting their own country's air, water and land at a rapid clip. If they are willing to kill their own families for a buck, why on earth do silly Americans think they would not be put at risk?

If stupid people can't be bothered to read a newspaper or put two and two together, they WILL suffer. Their children will also suffer. This is a fact of life.

49. Seems to me that these folks are looking for money for treatment for their kids. Why is it always someone else's fault?? Check their gene pool!!

50. I wonder if the dishes were made in China? We have been having a lot of problems over the last 6-8 months or so with products imported from China violating the Federal lead standard. We need to stop dealing with China.

51. I really hate how "sue" happy our society has become, but THIS instance seems valid. This is what happens when we stop producing our own goods and services....do you think a foreign company that pays its employees a pitance is going to care about whether their production methods are safe or whether they'll have a negative health impact on the consumer???? It's hard to for the U.S. to regulate foreign sweat shop production processes. Our only hope is that the Chineese, Indian workshps etc will rise up and demand better conditions and pay.

52. How freakin pathetic to try and make money off your kids' illnesses. Not in a million years would i do that to my kids!!

Posted at 3:06PM on Jan 17th 2008 by what's that now?

53. Do you really think a lawyer would take this case if: A) the plates don't contain abnormally high quantities of lead; B) the children's blood hasn't been tested for lead; and C) a medical doctor has attested to the children's impairments as being related to lead poisoning?
It would be really stupid for a lawyer to present this case if those three things haven't already been proven...of course, there are at least two or three lawyers out there who have done stupid things before!
If A, B & C have been proven, what will need to be shown is that OTHER things in the kids' environment (paint, toys, drinking water, etc.) don't also have high levels of lead which has added to their poisoning.
Please don't attack the kids...and hold off a little longer before attacking the parents. By the way, some people have said that the parents are cousins. Can someone please provide a link for that?

54. Re: my previous comment.
Of course, I meant that C) a medical doctor has NOT
attested to the children's impairments as being related to lead
poisoning.
Sorry -- the way I wrote it was a little confusing. I hope you understand what I was trying to say.

59. what typical B.S. IF the kids are really sick it's most likely due to the fact that the mom is a crack or meth head. sounds like your typical gold digging whore seeking a fat payment via the lawsuit lottery.

60. This lawsuit makes no sense. If there was really lead in her dinnerware then it would have been featured all over the news and it would have been recalled. plus the parents would have lead poisoing whether it affected them mentally or physically. and like someone else sid more than one family would have been affected by this set, come on out of the millions of peeps in the US they are the only family that have purchased it. its just another get rich quick scheme
