R.I.P.
Heath Ledger is Dead

Heath Ledger TMZ has learned that 2006 Academy Award nominee Heath Ledger has died in NY.

He was found dead in his bed in one of his residences in Soho by his housekeeper at 3:35 PM ET today. Law enforcement sources tell TMZ they believe it was not a crime, adding that prescription pills were found near his body.

According to NYPD a masseuse arrived at Ledger's apartment and was let in by a housekeeper. When Ledger didn't answer his bedroom door, the housekeeper and the masseuse opened it and found him unconscious. They attempted to wake him; when they couldn't, they called 911.

We're told when paramedics responded, the actor was in full cardiac arrest. They attempted to perform CPR on him, but were unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The 28-year-old actor has a two year old daughter with former fiancee Michelle Williams -- they separated in September, 2007. He plays The Joker in the upcoming Batman film, "The Dark Knight" and is perhaps best known for his groundbreaking role as Ennis in "Brokeback Mountain."

We're told Heath had dinner last night with his model girlfriend Gemma Ward.

Story developing...

31. For Heath

Another angel is taken,
Another branch has shaken,
to the core, as I wish…
the news was mistaken.

He had an honest face,
one that left many hearts breaking,
when he decided to walk down an isle,
admitting he was taken.

Then came the love of his life,
Someone even more dear than his future wife:
their tiny princess Miss Waltzing Matilda,
surrounded by a different kind of light,
so unbelievably magnetic and bright,
that it gave him enough will to try and fight,
as he dealt with his sworn enemy,
his own worst vice:
a darkness within that wouldn’t play nice.

But the light must have dimmed somehow,
because sadly, he has left for good now,
leaving behind an abandoned & broken family,
and a tearstained sea of grieving fans,
all wondering why this happened,
to such a beautiful man.

Another angel is taken,
Another branch has shaken,
to the core, as I wish…
the news was mistaken.

Those soulful eyes and that sturdy jaw,
can’t pierce our hearts anymore.
His sexy accent and freckled skin,
won’t light fires within our souls like before.
He is gone forever,
Since he lost his final fight,
Against a very cruel avenger called life.

No point asking what finally did him in...
Whether it was the drugs or the spirits,
will never change what was stolen
so cruelly from us,
too soon, without a real warning,
or much of a fuss.

Another angel is taken,
Another branch has shaken,
to the core, as I wish…
the news was mistaken.

Rest easy Pretty Angel,
you will be sober & safe now...
We hadn’t met yet, in this life,
but we’ll have our chance in another one,
someday, somehow...

May he rest in peace... the world will miss him.

32. You guys are all being silly with your OMG's and WTF's. I, personally, am not surprised at all. Moat sensible people know that those like Heath, who become VERY famous at a young age, have a hard time with it and end up drinking and partying and on all kinds of prescription drugs. Judy Garland is just one of many examples I could name. What I'd like to know is what is it about the career of acting and being famous that does this to far too many people out there.

34. Why? Why? When he appeared in the film The Closer, as a Roman Catholic sin-eater, I had the worst feeling... and wished he hadn't taken the role, it was too satanic, too dark, too scarey... and then, in the end of December, I wondered who would be the first person in January 2008 to die, the first person of fame, I mean, of 'important' fame..., and now it is him... :( i don't wonder why, in this case, i just wonder if it isn't related to that film... :( Requiem in Pace. 37. Beware of ambien people - it has bad interactions like allergic shock , heart attack and worse.. it can be abused...

I read this information on a Rx website

Ambien Overdose

Ambien with the generic name of Zolpidem belongs to a class of medicines that effects the central nervous system, called sedative hypnotics. Ambien is closely related to a family of drugs called benzodiazepines. These drugs cause sedation, muscle relaxation, act as anti-convulsants (anti-seizure), and have anti-anxiety properties. Ambien has selectivity in that it has little of the muscle relaxant or anti-seizure effect and more of the sedative effect. Therefore, it is used as a medication for sleep. People who take too much Ambien may become excessively sleepy or even go into a light coma. The symptoms of overdose are more severe if the person is also taking other drugs that depress the central nervous system. Some cases of multiple overdoses have been fatal.

When abused, Ambien tablets are taken orally, crushed and then snorted, or dissolved in water and "cooked" for intravenous injection.

Overdose of Ambien may include:

sleepiness
confusion
dizziness
clumsiness
severe nausea or vomiting
staggering
difficult or slow breathing
slowed heart rate
unconsciousness

39. I bet they will find out he overdosed on ambien by orally taken to many pills or by snorting the ambien pill powder......
on people.com..... friends and strangers which met him around the city of new york at all times in the morning...... knew he was suffering from insomnia..........

The people magazine article:

New York's Washington Square Park is sometimes a haven for the stray homeless to get some shut-eye, curled up on a bench somewhere. For Heath Ledger, it was a place to roam while sleep evaded him.

"He would walk early in the morning – around 6:30 a.m. or 7," says retired city-worker Tony Rivera, 52, who walks his dog in the park each day at that time, "because, he said, he always had trouble sleeping. That's why he'd come out so early in the morning."

Once in a while, Ledger, 28, would watch the early-morning chess players in action – sometimes even joining them. He often talked about his daughter, says Rivera, who struck up a chat with the actor during one of his sleepless strolls. "He said it was a great thing, being a dad."

But Ledger's friendly banter with park locals was always punctuated by one recurring complaint: "He'd say, 'I'm very tired,' " Rivera recalls, "and he looked it."

Ledger, the type of actor who immersed himself in his film roles, spoke in a recent interview about how work-related stress gave him insomnia. During the shooting of his last completed film, The Dark Knight, Ledger told The New York Times in November that he often took the prescribed sleeping aid, Ambien, in an attempt to coax himself into a slumber.

"Last week I probably slept an average of two hours a night," he told The Times. "I couldn't stop thinking. My body was exhausted and my mind was still going." Ledger continued to say that taking one pill had no effect on him. He'd have to take second to fall asleep, only to awake an hour later with his "mind still racing."

Partying Until Sunrise
Ledger's reported hard-partying drinking at all hours of the night may have been another way for him to try and self-medicate himself to sleep. "He partied a lot," one friend of Ledger's told PEOPLE. "He didn't really stop partying. At nights when I was going home, he was just starting. He was part of the New York scene." Another club regular recalls that Ledger would arrive at Manhattan lounge, The Beatrice Inn, at 3:30 a.m., "and he never left until sunrise."

But not home to sleep, it seems. Instead, Ledger would be out for a walk in the park and perhaps he'd play a groggy game of chess with strangers. "He didn't seem to be such a good chess player," recalls Rivera, "but I'm not sure ..."

Ledger, perhaps, wasn't interested in winning or losing. He was just trying to calm his "racing" mind so he could once and for all get some sleep as the rest of the city woke up.

PS. tragic that he died alone in a cold, large apartment without family or friends nearby to help him........

42. To respond to someone's post...Drugs are not only used in the US. They are used all around the world. I think the media overseas gives the US a bad reputation. I don't think drugs are used in every household. They are not in mine, so I don't think the US should be blamed for Heath's or anybody's drug use. It is up to an individual to ingest such things. Americans aren't druggies, sex-crazed, and violent people like the media portrays. So stop believing what you watch on television. It's FICTION.
And Amy Winehouse is not in the US, but in Britain and look at her. So please stop blaming the US for the downward spiral of some people. It happens everywhere. RIP Heath and my sympathy for your family and friends.
