Sorry, Oprah, I Want to Talk About Heath

Oscar winner Daniel Day Lewis was on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" today, ostensibly to talk about his current Oscar nomination -- but instead made an emotional statement on the death of Heath Ledger.

Breaking away from Oprah's prepared questions, Lewis choked-up as he spoke of the late actor -- even though he "didn't know him."

16. Heath was a kind soul. He affected and touched many even though we may never of met him. This isn't the typical celebrity death story. This is truly sad and tragic. He was a good guy.

17.
That was truly sincere and came from his heart. Compared to some of the other 'celebs' Ive seen speaking about him on various media outlets.

22. msfanni- well said.

They said he was depressed...........I can see that only getting 10 million a film.
We should all have such a rough life.

Pill heads OD every day.

Too bad his publicist did not do this good a job on this guy when he was alive!

25. That was so incredibly heartfelt. It's amazing that he was able to say those things as I'm sure many people were thinking the same.

27. I just watched the touching comments Daniel Day Lewis just made about Heath Ledger. What a nice man to. He really spoke from his heart. But....TMZ you said he spoke of Heath Ledger "instead" of answering Oprah's prepared questions. That is NOT true. He very kindly answered all questions. He just broke away for a moment to touch on Heath's memory. That was a very tastefully done.

28. Very eloquent statement of a fellow actor from DDL.

I hope everyone who has bad things to say about the dead will just keep it inside their very cold souls.

29. wow msfanni-
it will be interesting if the toxicology reports come back and there are no illicit drugs in his system. Word is he's been clean for awhile. You seem very bitter about this whole thing. I don't think he tried to kill himself-I think he probably had a bad combo of RX meds-an honest mistake made by someone who may have been ill with pneumonia, suffering from insomnia and jet lag. It IS tragic--
