Sorry, Oprah, I Want to Talk About Heath

Oscar winner Daniel Day Lewis was on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" today, ostensibly to talk about his current Oscar nomination -- but instead made an emotional statement on the death of Heath Ledger.

Breaking away from Oprah's prepared questions, Lewis choked-up as he spoke of the late actor -- even though he "didn't know him."

319. Hey 316, aren't you girls done with that keg yet? And, clearly, YOU didn't ignore me. I guess your sorority sisters left you hanging, figuratively speaking, of course. Get some rest. By the way, college girl, it's an apostrophe not a quotation mark.
Check your first sentence.

@318 Hunh -- exactly. What is that?

320. It's so nice to see that people are sophisicated and compassionate at a time like this. It's rare to see anyone deflect away from their their best actor nom to discuss the passing of a person they didnt know. I thought that was amazing. What a wonderful soul.

321. I have always like DDL. I think that Heath's death touched so many of us even though we did not know him personally. To people who are sensitives and can feel deeply for another human being, I find it hard to swallow the callus remarks made about this whole incident. Those who have experienced loss and understand the so many things that could have been see it as a world stopping experience. How should one be talking about anything when such a promising life slipped away too soon? When my mother passed I remember looking around at the world and thinking everyone was just going about their business- working, shopping- getting their hair done, etc....and my mom was dead. My world stopped and I was angry that the rest of the world kept going. Selfish maybe, but perhaps this compassion would be what stops wars. The sympathy shown for just one lost life. I applaud Daniel Day Lewis for interrupting and expressing the feelings many of us have. During all the craziness the media has reported without facts or ethics (which apparently reporting has come to now), Mr. Lewis was the one to stop time if only for a few seconds for a promising young life. Thank you Daniel.

322. You really are "challenged", and punctuationally wrong. Now follow along, sweetie, I'll TRY to make it clear for you. I know you haven't covered it yet in school, but I'll go slow.

In the text you wrongly critiqued, there are two ways to write it and still maintain the context (neither are YOU'RE way, though).

It can be grammatically broken into two seperate and distinct sentences as I chose to do, or it may be done with a comma AND a hyphen (,-) since the last sentence segment is a complete sentence in and of itself but can be punctuated this way as a "tag on". See, dear, it is all dependant upon how the writer wants it to be read. In THIS case the writer simply wanted a complete pause (where the (.) is used) for stress.

I know it may be a little advanced for you, but you'll get to it in another year or two, - hang in there.

324. Oprah STAGED the whole thing. They BOTH deserve an Oscar. I wonder which one would be the supporting role?

327. I think DDL is being truly real in land of phonies. We don't know actors personally, but we feel like we do. When I saw the headline on TMZ it was like a punch in the stomach. I can only imagine the grief his family & friends must be feeling. He's gone & it is a huge loss .

328. #323 English - could be that you're on the wrong thread/website? But, since I can't resist, there is no such word as "punctuationally." Also, it's YOUR way and not YOU'RE way. Oh yeah, and another critique "sweetie and dear" punctuation marks should be included within quotation marks.

Whoa, I don't know to whom you're writing, but you owe me big time. Try to be a little tolerant especially when you made so many mistakes. Ok?

329. 178. Funny how eulogizing someone seems to have taken on an element of putting them on various pedestals making them MORE than they actually were. He had little respect for himself or others which is evidenced by the drug abuse and various "lifestyle" choices that were not only a detriment to him, but would have greatly affected his little daughter if allowed to go on. More sad than his wasteful and preventable death is the void left in a very little girl's life.

I couldn't agree more. While I don't know if the "photo-op" was staged or not, I do have sneaking suspicions that won't go away. He didn't even know Ledger, and it's conspicuously close to Oscar-time. And, it's not out of reason or character for an "actor" to do this. As Perez brought out the other day on the Morning Show, Travolta has been running around doing the same thing. Putting it past no one, I just don't know. Now that he's gone, all attention needs to go back to where it should have been all along, - to a very young, very small, and very innocent, little girl who'se asked for none of it.
