Sorry, Oprah, I Want to Talk About Heath

Oscar winner Daniel Day Lewis was on "The Oprah Winfrey Show" today, ostensibly to talk about his current Oscar nomination -- but instead made an emotional statement on the death of Heath Ledger.

Breaking away from Oprah's prepared questions, Lewis choked-up as he spoke of the late actor -- even though he "didn't know him."

76. 46. oh jesus. PLEASE!!!
there are people all over this planet that live daily with illness and death and war. Somehow they survive and take care of their children that need them.

The LAST thing I want to hear is how "tragic" this all is and how it somehow relates to poor poor Heath taking on the JOKER charachter. How tough and unfortunate it must be to get paid millions to PRETEND for a living.
"poor heath just got in over his head with his joker character and couldnt have dealt with it so well".

we should all be so freaking lucky to live such lives.

my GOD you people are shallow.

77. Daniel Day Lewis is a class act, and his statements regarding Heath Ledgers situation are real and heartfelt.

To call Heath a Junkie and act as if he deserved this at this time is tasteless and irrelevent. The toxicology reports will come in in approx 2 weeks. Anything said about the situation will no longer affect Mr. Ledger. But making petty mean remarks about him will affect his family, friends and possibly his daughter in time. #54 LP - is completely right.

Talk about shallow, disrespecting the departed is pettty and serves no purpose.

84. I re-thought my comment #54.

His daughter is only two, by the time she can read she will not even remember who her bio-dad was. So this stuff will not hurt her.
Mom probably will have had several out of wedlock children with different daddies by then.

87. 73. I can not believe some of the insanely disrespectful trash coming from people mouths. You don't know what killed him yet. You don't if he had a stubstance abuse problem. Really you don't know anything. DDL said what many people are feeling, remorse for his family. BTW do you go see movies with crappy actors in it, I bet not. That what keeps DDL and Heath making the big bucks, they are truely good at what they do.

Then, by your own statement, Lewis (who also "didn't know him") doesn't know "anything", either. And, that they're "good actors" is simply YOUR opinion, - of which many disagree. I wonder if you've been fooled by just another scripted "acting job". Travolta is running around trying to do the same thing. Don't be so gullible.

90. His death is sad. The reverential attitude about him is bull, however. I am especially nauseated by the press, and places such as TMZ and Perez Hilton (the biggest hypochrite). It's already being reported about his drug use and drug problems. Are people being so reverential just because he kept his addiction hidden?

The question is: why are there some celbrities (usually women) with addiction problems, emotional issues, etc. that are considered fair game for ridicule and public humiliation? But people such as Ledger (albeit his death is tragic) Owen Wilson etc.--treated with SUCH sensitivity? Why is okay to attack some people (usually women) but not others?

Don't know if this has been brought up before, but look at it this way:
The masseuse called up Mary Kate Olsen, INSTEAD of 911???
Olsen, instead of telling the masseuse (or housekeeper) to call 911 right away--sent over her security guard???

Ah, buddy. Ah, me. Is it because they knew he had a drug problem. They thought he was passed out, too many drugs. SO they avoided calling 911 because they thought he was just zonked on drugs and could be revived? If they'd called 911 right away, even knowing his drug problem--might he have lived?

Why else would they not call 911 immediately? Even if one person was an idiot--are we to assume BOTH were? Would YOU call 911 if you found someone passed out, unresponsive? Or send over your bodyguard instead.

There's just as much to learn from tragic drug deaths as from other stuff. Kids etc. --don't blow your life away on drugs. Death can happen even to the best people.

And hey, TMZ--treat everyone equally will you? I'm not saying diss Ledger, god bless him. But be kind to others. You can report news. But treat some people special, and tear others apart just because you make money off of trainwrecks.
