Monte Carlo in Las Vegas is Burning!

The Monte Carlo Hotel in Las Vegas is on fire -- looks like about four stories from the roof down are toast. The fire may have started in one of the luxury suites on the 32nd floor, and has burned to the 24th floor. No reports of injuries yet. Traffic is snarled on the strip.


A fire spokesman said the fast-spreading blaze started around 11:00 AM PT. The hotel has more than 3,000 rooms -- minus a few now. The 35-story hotel is situated between New York, New York and the Bellagio. Firemen are battling the blaze from the roof, where four workers are trapped, according to FOX News. Guests are being evacuated to the MGM Grand, which was the name of the hotel that burned in 1980 (which is now Bally's).

AP is reporting that the fire started on the roof of the hotel, which opened in 1996, at a cost of $344 million. As of 11:52 AM PT, there are not reports of anyone trapped inside the hotel.

In a spectacular achievement in both construction and firefighting -- this fire seems to have been brought under control inside of an hour.

61. Some of your comments are sick. I too live in Vegas, and it's a sad and terrible thing when one of our casino's catches fire. Those people who work in them, work their asses off to support their families. Have some respect about this situation. Lots of people are out of work for the time being!

65. sigh. people are so ridiculous sometimes.

unfortunately, people will lose jobs because of this, in order for the hotel to use those dollars to rebuild. When a significant/iconic building is destroyed in your own town, there is an economic impact no matter how you look at it. It's never good to see something like this.

As far as the comments about Sin City burning to the ground and all the heathens with it.... would that only be restricted to the 4-miles that is The Strip, or are the rest of us doomed in the suburbs, as well? If so, I better get to enjoying the palm trees, beautiful weather, Red Rock Canyon, mountains and the rest of God's work before I burn in hell. Thanks, guys!

67. In your interest to sensationalize this news event. you have gotten the facts all wrong. The facade (outside) of the building was on fire. They did not "lose" the top 4 floors. The people who were evacuated to the MGM wer not evacuated to the hotel that burned in 1980. The hotel that did burn in 1980 is now Bally's. Try to write the story before the headlines !!!!!

68. #49..............That's exaclty the same thing I said (#42) (only in a different way). VIVA LAS VEGAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The fire is over now and NEWS : 4 workers WERE trapped by the fire!!! There was a welding team doing some work on the roof. They are safe!!! Good luck to everyone here trying to get around town w/ the traffic now!!! (USE SIDE STREETS!!!!! always works for me!!!!!)

69. Fire's been over for a while and it looks like no one got hurt- cool! A coupla months and several mill and you won't even be able to tell a fire ever happened. What is interesting is how even a story like this one got a fair # of Brit comments and even a few Winos thrown in for good measure. Mainly Brit tho. It is crazy how much absolute hate she has managed to generate so that when any catastrophe happens, people want her in the middle of it. Actually, I can't stand anything about her in the least bit, but it is still interesting none the less!

70. Just for TMZ info....the The current MGM is NOT the MGM Grand that was on fire in the 80's. That building is currently Bally's hotel, which is down the strip. If people are being evacuated to MGM, the NEW MGM is located across the street right across from New York New York hotel. The new MGM is not the actual building that was on fire in 80.

We LOVE vegas...we go as often as possible. I don't even gamble...just love it!
If you have never been there...GO MAN GO!
We love you Vegas and all the people who work there! Esp the staff of the Monte Carlo, who has for many years been great to our family. Like a home away from home....really.

73. The MGM Grand did not burn in 1980, the MGM did, which is north of where the MGM Grand is currently. The old MGM is now Bally's . Just thought that you should know!

74. You people are very cold hearted. I live in Las Vegas and you don't realize how many people work there. They will be out of work for how long? They depend on tips to feed their families. Why don't you show a little compassion. Nobody would wish that your place of work burned down.

75. The MGM Grand that burned in 1980 isn't the same MGM Grand as today. The 1980 hotel is now known as Bally's, catercorner to Caesar's Palace.
