Is Scientology a Religion? Buffy Says No

Original "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" Kristy Swanson acknowledges that Britney Spears' custody battle is "none of her business" -- but what she won't acknowledge is Scientology ... or nude photos of herself.

Either way it's win-win.

16. Anyone with the remotest idea of embracing this phony 'religion' should take the time to read the determination deliverd in the Victorian (Australian) Supreme in the 1960s. These fakers took that determination and built into this nonsense the trappings of religious ritual as well as using the US legal 'system' to assume the mantle of 'church'......these manoeurvers beg the question: when is a 'church'......a Church

17. IMHO, Scientology is just a"religious" ponzi scheme. The mythology CO$ is based on is much more far-fetched than that of other more traditional religions but if that's what gives their adherents (assuming they are willing & consenting members of the church) solace, more power to them. What I do NOT like is CO$ or any other religion throwing its weight around to subject non adherents to their rules/belief (i.e., CO$'s interference in public schools in Clearwater, FL and Arizona in their first step towards banning psychoactive drugs and psychology/psychiatry) or their bizarre fair-game attempts at destroying anyone who will opening disagree with the church and those who try to leave it (Lisa McPherson, anyone?). I do have to admit that I do get a giggle overt hypocrisy in attacking any sort of psychological counseling/therapy when that is the cornerstone of the church (theirs is just from the LHR school of psychobabble).

18. I don't think that it's considered a religion by traditional religions but the problem is if the government can declare it a non-religion then it could declare any other faith a non-religion and there by void the First Amendment protections.

19. Read about the so-called church, directly from Hubbard's son. Search for "Lyle Stuart's Open letter in the New York Times". We lived near their "church" and were creeped out on a regular basis. Watch your wallet, watch your back and most importantly, guard your soul.

20. No religious freaks deserve any rights for believing fairytales.

21. $cientology is anything but a "religion". It's a dangerous, duplicitous cult. Go to xenu.net to see for yourself, or whyaretheydead.net. They charge hundreds of thousands of dollars to learn the basic tenents of the "church", force you to disconnect from anyone who questions their tactics, collect embarassing info on its members should they ever try to leave, the list goes on and on. Bravo to Buffy!!!!!

Oh yeah, and they think Christ is an implant from the evil intergalactic warlord Xenu. Of course they won't tell you that upfront, it'll cost you about $400,000 to learn that little gem.

22. The truly one of the biggest cults and moneymaking machine in history. Tom Cruise is just a sucker just like most of Hollyweird thinking God is not the answer. These cult allow you to do thing without judgement and that's what scares the freaks in Hollyweird!

23. There is but one God, though there are an infinite number of alternatives, some of which, call themselves religions. A religion is merely, something in which you believe... It may have somemthing to do with God, but not necessarily. Personally, I don't consider myself "religious," but I do believe in the Living God. Hope that helps... Good luck!

24. OC, I have to agree with you and it was a sad day for Lisa McPherson. I just don't know what is happening with the world these days. All I can say is I love the Lord Jesus and am blessed each and every day I am alive and that God sent his only son to die for each and everyone of us. Praise the Lord almightly.

28. I have to say I am impressed at anyone who takes on the church of scientology. the c of s is relentless, pursuing anyone who they feel has defamed or challenged their religion. I knew someone who left the church and could not get them to talk about what had happened it was so stressful for them. Many groups use mental health "technologies" that are similar to what is done by the c of s, and they are also pyramid schemes in ways (such as est - now "the forum" which relies on getting new members to volunteer time to bringing in more people and provide hours and hours of labor). Still, the people who join these groups report feeling better and being happier. As long as they do not hand over all their worldly belongings to the "leader" and are able to maintain themselves (keeping jobs, paying bills, etc.), who are we to stop them? However, we are entitled to the same respect from them. By becoming a recruitment machine, TC opens himself to this criticism. Let him practice what he wants in his home, and leave us to what we want to do.

29. all she says is that she "does not acknowledge scientology". that is not the same as really criticizing it. i think many of the people in the discussion are reading too much into her comment.

30. I like how she won't acknowledge Scientology but she will have an affair with a married man. Trash his marriage and his ex's kids....then have their love child. How is her career going anyway?
