Ledger's Death Ruled "Acute Intoxication"

The NYC medical examiner has finished the toxicology report following the death of Heath Ledger, and has just ruled that the actor's death was caused by "acute intoxication by the combined effects of oxycodone, hydrocodone, diazepam, temazepam, alprazolam, and doxylamine."

The NYPD found five medications in Ledger's apartment after his death, including anti-anxiety medications alprazolam (Xanax), diazepam (Valium) and Lorazepam (Ativan). The sleeping medication zopiclone (Imovane) and the sedative temazepam (Restoril) -- which is used by people with "debilitating insomnia" -- were also found. Doxylamine is an antihistamine used in the short-term treatment of insomnia.

76. i have insomnia. i bet he kept taking those pills until he felt sleepy. ive done that. when your body is so damn tired but your mind wont stop, you really dont care how many pills you swallow. it was just an accident, suicide is usually more dramatic. i wouldnt judge this guy, who knows what kind of accident i might get into.. oh wait, i'm not a celebrity, nevermind.

77. This is so sad. I know the pain of depression and the panic that sets in when you think you are not going to get to sleep. I really believe that this last Batman movie scared the crap out of this poor boy and he went from dr. to dr. for meds. It happens all the time, he just happened to be famous. And Kelly, dr. do not get kick backs anymore, it is against the law.

78. Rest In Peace, Heath Ledger. You were amazing, and no one can ever replace you. The world was lucky to have you, but Heaven is the lucky one now. God Bless you, your family and friends. We love you, and We will always love you.

I pray to God for all the negative reports to go away now that we know what happened, and let Heath's family mourn the loss of such a loved father, brother, son, and friend. My prayers are always with Heath and his family.

79. oxycodone is percocet or oxycontin. hydrocodone is vicodin, lorcet, norco or lortabs. diazepam is valium. temazepam is restoril. alprazolam is xanax. Doxylamine is an antihistamine. it's like unisom.
so sad. the docs should be investigated for prescribing all that.

81. Guess he will get to sleep now.
He might have been going to a lot of different Doctors and they were not aware of him taking so many sleeping medications.
You have to be stupid not to know what might happen if you take all those sleeping medications at one time.
The Doctors may be to blame, but the person taking it has to take blame also.

82. John Lennon - Thanks for the heads up. I had no idea that kickbacks are now illegal. That said, are they pharmeceutical reps still allowed to buy whole doctor's offices lunch or breakfast everyday as an alternate to a "kickback"?

83. Damn it! Another hollywood star dies from DRUGS! What a waste of life. He was such a talented actor. RIP Heath. He truly was a cut above the rest.

84. You can't blame the doctors on this. They didn't shove them down his throat. AND he probably had a doctor in London, a doctor in New York, a doctor in L.A. and a doctor in Australia (when he visited in January). People who want drugs know how to get them.

85. "24. I hope the family sues the prescribing doctor(s)."

but the whole thing about doctor shoppers (people
who are clearly attaining these drugs only for abuse) is
that they are able to get away with it so easily because
they don't just have one doctor usually (unless they are
lucky enough to find someone particularly lacking in
morals and desire to retain their job).

there'll be five, six, a dozen doctors that these addicts
will go to, so that to one doctor they just seem like someone
with some anxiety who needs xanax... and then then next
doctor thinks it's someone with some backpain so they need
oxycodone... and then the cycle goes on... and eventually
you end up dead face down in your pillow.

86. Yes, Kelly, the reps still buy offices lunch--catered lunches. I know first hand. It's a blatant kickback, but just not defined as one, so no trouble is gotten into. Which is wrong...
Poor Heath. That be a WHOLE lotta benzos and opiates. Damn.

87. In my opinion, there is no such thing as an accidental overdose. Unless of course the pills accidentally fell into his mouth. Literate adults should know better than to take more than prescribed on the pill bottle.

88. Just two weeks ago i was prescribed zopiclone it is a horrendous drug, I had major side effects right from the first night i took it. I have also tried Temazapam again horrendous. These drugs are bad enough on there own let alone mixed. To any one who says Heath was irrispocible screw you because having been presribed these drugs i can tell you they do knock you about. They are short lasting so during the day no one would have known his hell while under there influence at night.

90. 32. Who gives a crap about another "torchered" artist. Oh he suffered for his art Bla Bla Bla.
I feel sorry for his girlfriend & child but other that that SO WHAT. How does this affect my life...it doesnt.
At the end of the day he's just another doper addict.

"torchered" - does that mean he was on fire? Look at a dictionary sometimes people! I agree that the doctors should be held somewhat liable, they at least need to be more cognizant of what patients are doing, what the hell reason would a doctor need to prescribe Oxycontin for? Unless he had been in SEVERE pain, which we know he was not. I wouldn't be surprised if these doctors asked no questions, as he could pay and due to his celebrity status...regardless, a life ended too soon.
