Ledger's Death Ruled "Acute Intoxication"

The NYC medical examiner has finished the toxicology report following the death of Heath Ledger, and has just ruled that the actor's death was caused by "acute intoxication by the combined effects of oxycodone, hydrocodone, diazepam, temazepam, alprazolam, and doxylamine."

The NYPD found five medications in Ledger's apartment after his death, including anti-anxiety medications alprazolam (Xanax), diazepam (Valium) and Lorazepam (Ativan). The sleeping medication zopiclone (Imovane) and the sedative temazepam (Restoril) -- which is used by people with "debilitating insomnia" -- were also found. Doxylamine is an antihistamine used in the short-term treatment of insomnia.

91. Just two weeks ago i was prescribed zopiclone it is a horrendous drug, I had major side effects right from the first night i took it. I have also tried Temazapam again horrendous. These drugs are bad enough on there own let alone mixed. To any one who says Heath was irrispocible screw you because having been presribed these drugs i can tell you they do knock you about. They are short lasting so during the day no one would have known his hell while under there influence at night.

93. The family doesn't need to sue anyone. A drug addict is a drug addict whether they are taking prescriptions or street drugs.

94. Wow. This guy was not very bright. He had a pharmacy of some of the most potent OTC drugs available and he "accidently" offed himself? I've known people that vomit after taking one Xanax, let alone micing them with other downers. This death is not tragic, it's just plain stupid. The people that are thanking god it was not "illegal" drugs are morons themselves. The vast majority of drug ODs these days is by prescription drugs. I'm not seeing a whole lot of difference between heroin and synthetic heroin (Oxycontin). Heath obviously had some deep-rooted problems and he turned to drugs to deal with them. It really does not matter if they were legal or not. They both do the same thing when abused; they kill you. He's a doper in my book and my only hope is that it will shine a light on the dangers of abusing so-called "legal" drugs.

96. Doug, With all due respect when taking these medicines they mess you up so much itis very understandable that Heath was not totaly compous mentos (sorry cant spell it) The impact of the medication is such he would have been totally out of it. I am amazed no one noticed his mood he would have been slurring his words, possibly he was even halusanating and seeing things. (sorry about my spelling) When i was taking zopiclone the effects were so bad and i was so out of it and i had no memory of events during my periods of medication. My hubsband actually phoned my shrink because he was so worried about me. But i was none the wiser because i was so out of it. These medications are lethal i was on 10mg and it knocked me off my feet.

98. There were 6 different drugs found in his system, yet only 5 found in the apartment? The oxycodone is not mentioned as having been found in the apartment - and personally I found that to be the most disturbing (although the combo was unfortunately deadly) Oxycodone is highly addictive and gives the user similar effects like that of heroin or morphine - and it also is very big in underground sales, so he may have obtained it illegally - maybe that is why it is not mentioned, perhaps the others were in prescription bottles and this he purchased and used - I mention this because unfortunately many people are doing this, buying prescription drugs illegally and abusing them and with these obviously bad results - Perhaps a bit of good can come from this horrible tragedy and Hollywood will spotlight this epidemic like they do other illnesses - He appeared to be a very kind, loving, nice man, never heard anyone saying bad things about him in the tabloids and now he is gone -

101. You know i sit here and read all these comments about heath and i can't believe how rude and evil this world is! You have know idea what this man was going through and why he took all these pills. Were you there? So if you can't say something nice about someone, don't say anything at all and leave your rude comments at home.

102. Here's my summation and you will see it is an easy mistake to make. Here is what he was taking:

1) His daily prescribed anti-anxiety medicine: Xanax (aka alprazolam)
2) His insomnia sleep disorder medication: Restoril (aka tamezapam)
3) Robitussin for his pneumonia or cold symptoms (contains the Doxylamine and hydrocodone)
4) Aspirin/Percocet/Acetaminiphine (contains the Oxycodone) for the muscle aches and headaches caused by fever symptoms.
5) Valium (aka Diazepam) (This is the only part I can't explain)

All but #5 are typical for a person who has pneumonia and also suffers from depression and insomnia. 1 & 2 are probably what he took on a daily basis. #3 and #4 probably things he just began taking for his flu/pneumonia. Again, #5 is the only one I can't explain and seems unusual for the average person to take if he was already on Xanax.

103. what about the zopiclone? were does that come into it? I was precribed it for insomnia and tamazepam it was eather but not both at the same time. Zopiclone 10mg really knocked me about why would he ever need two benzodiazapines?

104. This is a very sad outcome to a very promising life.He obviously had more troubles than he wanted to admit or get help for.The fact of the matter is he is gone, his suffering is over and we should all just let him rest in peace. He was one of my favorite actors for the last few years and I will miss seeing him in more great movies. But his death or how he died will not make me think less of him.We are all human,we all have problems.Life is too short to lay blame or have anger.Rest in Peace Heath, you will be greatly missed.

105. Ths is far more common than many people realize. My husband died in the same way. From taking pain medication for a back injury resulting from playing with our kids in the pool. FDA really needs to monitor and regulate these combinations.
