Pedro and the Cockfight -- The Horrifying Video

2/7/2008 8:14 PM PST BY TMZ STAFF

TMZ has obtained the video of three-time Cy Young award winner Pedro Martinez at a cockfight with Hall of Fame pitcher Juan Marichal in the Dominican Republic. Did Michael Vick not teach us all a lesson?

The video shows Mets star Martinez and Marichal serving as "soltadores" -- the people who release the animals into the death ring. As the fight goes on -- which we have chosen not to show -- Martinez and Marichal can be seen in the audience, smiling and laughing.

Cockfighting is legal and popular in the Dominican Republic.

It's unclear whose rooster won, but really -- does it matter?

193. Point is Yes we know the world is cruel but when is someone going to take a stand for others.. Others including animals. This world is run by greed and that disgusting spik thinks he's such a man but in the real world he would get his as$$ kicked since about 90% of men are bigger than him.. There is something wrong with people who need to abuse those smaller than them He is disgusting and will burn in hell!

I think there's something wrong with people who feel the need to use derogatory racial slurs. Speaking of azz kicking, I dare you to use that word in a hispanic neighborhood.

But then, I had chicken for dinner tonight so I suppose I'm going to burn in hell too. Oh well.

"How many of you sanctimonous people have been out of your home town? How many of you eat chicken?"

I've been all over this country and in 11 foreign countries, for all that has to do with anything. And if you can't see a distinction between torturing animals for fun and eating chicken, you're a numbskull. Although agribusiness companies do engage in some disgusting, inhumane practices, if they employed this method to kill their chickens and invited bloodthirsty ghouls to watch and place bets, they'd be arrested. We do have laws against animal cruelty in this country.

why is this wrong? If its legal in his country then let him do it. Just because people in the United States say its horrific, it doesn't mean its true. People, be a little more tolerant. How is this any different then you wearing a leather jacket or eating a mcchicken? After all, moral and values are merely subjective

You can take the boy out of the DR but you can't take the DR out of the boy. Face it, they play a game for a living.... that's all. Underneath it all they are all still animals.....

How pathetic, never heard his useless name until this. Anyone who could do that has no brain or heart. What goes around will come around.

By the way, to the person who commented saying basically, this guy is ok because he is latino, that is that dumbest thing I have ever heard. Wait, second dumbest. The dumbest would be someone who gets any pleasure out of watching animals kill each other. And if you think torture before death is ok... hmmm...

191. I hope Pedro learns his leeson here. Animal cruelty is wrong in any fashion. Him trying to defend himself by saying it is part of his culture is just no excuse in my book. His culture needs to evolve.

Yea...U.S, needs to start first with their racist( including the Dominican bias, though 90% of people who posted don't really know what they talking about) one sided mind before judging other countries. You guys ( including TMZ for posting a two-year old video...slow news day huh?) are all hypocrites...I mean come on unless ur a vegan, u eat chicken ( not saying what they're doing is right but D.R. isn't the only country that does this, especially when it used to be a tradition in the U.S., look it up in wikiepdia)

Btw, prostitution is as illegal as it is in the U.S. but like the U.s. they do it anyway

YEAH IT IS LEGAL TO TORTURE ANIMALS WHERE THEY ARE SO WE SHOULD LEAVE THEM ALONE? MAYBE THE JEWS SHOULD HAVE SHUT UP AND ALLOWED THE NAZIS TO USE PITCHFORKS ON THEIR BABIES, AFTER ALL IT WAS SANCTIONED, OR MAYBE THE AFRICAN AMERICANS SHOULD HAVE JUST SHUT UP NEVER TRIED FOR THE RIGHTS THEY DIDNT HAVE IN THE 60'S AND HUNG QUIETLY FROM THE TREES!!! IF SOMETHING IS LEGAL IT MUST BE RRIGHT??? THERE IS SOME REAL IGNORANCE OUT THERE. MAY THEY ROT IN THE ETERNAL FLAMES OF HELL NEXT TO THE NAZIS AND THE RACISTS!!!

"189. Mallardman, you're not seriously comparing this chicken thing to the holocaust are you? Because there's no comparison at all. One is a cultural pastime that some find distasteful the way some find bullfighting distasteful. The other was the systematic extermination of 6 million people because of their religion. I don't see any connection."

Posted at 1:48AM on Feb 8th 2008 by Jenny

If you don't see the connection, logic isn't your strong suit. The principle--that the legality of an immoral act doesn't validate it on moral grounds--applies whether you're talking about the government-sanctioned torture of animals in the DR or the government-sanctioned torture of humans in Germany. The law of gravity equally applies to the falling of a leaf or the crashing of a passenger jet; the latter effect is a tragedy, but the law of gravity remains the same and applies to both situations.

I notice, too, that you keyed only on the suffering of the Jews in the Holocaust, although I also mentioned as an example the suffering of African slaves in America. Was the suffering of those slaves, an estimated 10 million of whom died in the Middle Passage, of less significance? Are you seriously suggesting that the suffering of those millions of Africans can't be compared with the suffering of the Jews in the Holocaust?

See, two can play your game.

what's worse

so pedro takes part in a legal custom in another culture and that's horrific, yet paparrazzi and this very site insist on covering every second of britney's life (including running into traffic lanes for pictures, making illegal turns, etc) to sell to TMZ and other sites, but that's ok.....

selective journalism spins at their best...

MY POINT IS JUST BECAUSE SOMETHING IS LEGAL IT DOES NOT MAKE IT RIGHT. MY CONDEMNATION IS FOR THE ACTIONS THEMSELVES NOT THE PEOPLE COMMITTING THEM. I HAVE LOVE IN MY HEART FOR ALL PEOPLE AS IT IS NOT MY JOB TO JUDGE AND I DONT PRETEND TO. I AM FAR FROM PERFECT YET IT HURTS ME TO SEE BLOOD SPILLED FOR THE PLEASURE OF OTHERS IN ANY FORM.
