Yoko to Rocker -- Ono You Can't Use Your Name!

A hard-working heavy-metal-rocker is in danger of losing her musical identity -- all because Yoko Ono wants to bring a silver hammer down on her for using the name Lennon.

Lennon Murphy, a singer-songwriter whose band is called Lennon, has been sued by Yoko for "tarnishment" of her widow's name and for "fraudulently" registering the name as a trademark.

Ono, claims in court papers that Murphy is (intentionally) exploiting the name and confusing people by using it -- and wants her trademark canceled.

Murphy shoots back on her MySpace page that Yoko and her lawyer were asked back in 2000 about using the name for her debut CD on Arista Records, and they didn't object. Lennon (the band) has since been dropped by Arista, but continues to record. "If Yoko prevails," writes Lennon Murphy, "Lennon might never be able to tour or release records using the name Lennon."

196. Sorry Yoko, you had to get married to get the Lennon last name, where as Lennon was born with the name

197. Couldn't she fix the problem by simply adding to every cover, in small print on the bottom... "Not John"

198. It's just a name. Take a different one and you could be come "The artist formerly known as Lennon", and probably be do better.

199. It's nice to see the 'Dragon Lady' rhetoric back in full swing. Nothing like a lawsuit that doesn't affect many people to have tons of folks showing their true colors (not to mention ignorance, as the court papers are online and people are still talking about copyright -- this is not a copyright case). Shame on each and every one of you who are enjoying your 'hating' moment in the sun.

Lennon - the band and singer, not the ex-Beatle - made a grave, grave error by not getting written permisison from Lennon's estate - the ex-Beatle, not the band or singer - back in 2000. Lennon has every right to sue Lennon for the use of Lennon's name.

200. ok first yoko is evil. The funny thing is she(ono) when she hooked up with John didn't take his name, she was known as Yoko Ono, now that the name is worth something to the witch she wants it. Ono is truly using the Lennon name as much as she thinks this poor girl is. this girl Lennon has more right to it than Ono does. Lennon where can I buy your album? I listen to jazz music but if by buying your album I can help you and get Ono then so be it........

201. Dear Friends

A musician named Lennon Murphy is claiming that Yoko Ono has sued her and that Yoko is seeking to stop Lennon Murphy from performing under her name, Lennon Murphy. Both of these claims are untrue.

Several years ago, Lennon Murphy sought Yoko's permission to do her performances under her name, Lennon Murphy. Yoko, of course, did not object to her request. Subsequently, without Yoko's knowledge, Lennon Murphy filed an application in the United States trademark Office requesting the exclusive right to utilize the name "Lennon" for musical performances. Yoko's attorneys asked Lennon Murphy's attorneys and manager to withdraw her registration of exclusivity to the name LENNON for the trademark. Yoko also offered to cover all costs Lennon Murphy had incurred in filing for the trademark. But Lennon Murphy went ahead to register.

Yoko did not sue Lennon Murphy, but sought to stop her from getting the exclusive right to the name Lennon for performance purposes. For that, Yoko's attorneys, simply notified the Trademark office that Yoko did not believe it was fair that Ms. Murphy be granted the exclusive right to the "Lennon" trademark in relation to musical and entertainment services. As you can see, this is a very important issue for Yoko and the Lennon family.

Yoko says: I am really hurt if people thought that I told a young artist to not use her own name in her performances and had sought to sue her. I did no such thing. I hope this allegation will be cleared.

Thank you for your kind attention,
Yoko

203. Yoko. Get over it. I'm sorry that John can no longer rock. But Lennon can, should and will. Get a life that's yours and leave hers and everyone elses alone.
