"Idol" Contestant a Giant Phony?

Last night, 16-year-old "Idol" contestant David Archuleta said he "doubted" his talent. We're calling his bluff!

This kid's been a pro for years. TMZ tracked down one of his earlier (and chubbier) performances from the"Jenny Jones" show. Jennifer Hudson eat your heart out -- the kid killed it with a version of "And I Am Telling You ..."

"Jones" wasn't his only pre-"Idol" TV appearance and he may have even had a record deal! For the record, FOX tells us that contestants cannot currently have a management or recording contract.

Watch TMZ TV tonight for everything else we uncovered. Check local listings.

32. Uhh, you know you can be the best artist in the world and still be insecure and unsure of your talents. As a highly regarded artist, myself, I still have a lot of self-doubt. I'm not alone ... there are a lot of actual famous people who doubt their worth.

TMZ is just trying to dig new dirt on a new crop of wanna-bes. And I guess this is all they can find, for now. It's ridiculous.

33. Yes who cares. The real story and tragedy is Josiah Leming got the boot! You need to give him some press !! Idol took advantage of his life story --- kept him hanging on and then kicked him to the curb.

True raw talent. And they let him go. Idiots.

34. Ummmm, how is he a cheater? Or a phony? All he did was make one comment that he may have always doubted his talent, is that a crime? Or is that against the American Idol rules? I think not!

35. If TMZ is going to talk about David Archuleta, they also need to out Michael Lee, the Aussie, for his music video produced by Maverick Records http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WquoHxNMo0Y and Brooke White has a cd out for sale I saw on Amazon that was released in 2005 and produced by New Millenium Records. So if anyone should be out, it should be them. But I believe they only thing that would make then ineligible is if they currently are with a label and have a contract.

37. Just in case everyone missed it, he did mention at the beginning of the auditions that he had gone through a serious viral infection which attacked his vocal chords...he didn't think he would ever be able to sing again, it is by luck that he can...He;s not a cheater, just lucky to have his voice back again....

38. HE HAS THE SKILLS THEN HE SHOULD BE ON THERE. I AM SURE ALL THE OTHERS HAVE TRIED BEFORE IDOL WAS AVAILABLE. TMZ IS SEARCHING GO GET SOMETHING ELSE.

40. You think it's a sham that a 16-year-old boy has doubts about his talent? How much confidence did any of you have at 16, expecially when you compared yourself to those several years older? Even talented people can have low self-esteem.

41. he's a liar, bring back josiah...
randy and paula must give him a chance....

42. Don't be so mean spirited. He's sixteen...appearing on the Jenny Jones show as a kid doesn't mean he's a pro.
As for the record deal, anyone with a computer and a microphone can offer to record you and give you a deal.
That doesn't make him a pro, either...anyone who can talk can get one of these bogus record deals in LA...done in a garage. Give me a break. He is incredible and deserves to be on American Idol...where he can get a chance for a real record deal and career. TMZ, why are you trying to spoil TALENTED PEOPLE'S DREAMS.

44. TMZ you are waaaaay behind on your crappy "news". Every single one of the top 50 "idols" from this season has had some kind of professional music experience including previous contracts AND record deals that have since been dropped. No one this year is new to the music business.
