Autism Group to CBS: Fire That Retard!

Some idiot on "Big Brother 9" has irked more people than usual by referring to people with autism as "retards." Moron.
Click to read the letter!
TMZ has obtained this letter from John Gilmore, Executive Director of Autism United, to Viacom bigwig Sumner Redstone and CBS, demanding that they take action after a segment aired on Wednesday's show featuring Adam Jasinski making the unfortunate remark. According to the letter, Gilmore claims CBS made a "conscious choice" in running the quote -- and used it for "their own personal goals."

The organization calls for "Big Brother 8" (oops) to be canceled, and expects an apology to people with autism. Gilmore also tells TMZ they've contacted the show's advertisers.

256. re: 252

whatever you need to tell yourself to make it through the day. if your child was so smart, why isnt he standing up for himself on this board? why was he mute til he was 9? why did it take him til 21 to move into his own apartment? why was social services called numerous times on him/you to take your child away? why cant he tie his own shoes still? why does he work at mcdonalds? (I hit that one spot on earlier as a guess)

Reading your blog, I understand your frustration with your child and others who dont share your same opinions on autism vs regular folks, but constantly comparing your son to people and suggesting he's smarter is a bit long in the tooth. MSDOS wasnt exactly a shining example of a language - most kids of my age bracket into computers could program it in elem. school or early middle school. Show me some programs of him doing object oriented C or something modern and then Id be impressed.

Anyway - that's neither here nor there. I still contend that autistic kids are a drain on society and the medical percentages of retardation/social issues/etc of a large percentage of them still aligns with the non-PC word that got you in a lather: retard.

257. Well D...you better get used to these "retarded" autistic people because their being born at an ever advancing rate. ! out of every 150 children and 1 out of every 70 boy are presenting a dominant gene with obvious symptoms. What the stats don't show are the millions who are carrying a resessive gene for the disorder. "Bright" guys like you are going out like the dinosaurs, and I do use the term bright loosely. Pretty soon guys like you will be the special ones D...Idiot.

258. I have to apologize to everyone in the autism community for being a heartless, disgusting, human being. I have nothing else to do but to show everyone how idiotic and low class I am. I will vow to learn about autism by reading books about it during my lunch break at my job at Mcdonald's. Also, I hope you will tip me when I bag your groceries since that is the my part time job. Since, I don't want to be a drain on society. I know that autistic people are smart people who I will have to learn to live with and respect. I thank all of you for teaching me a valuable lesson. By the way, I have ridden the short bus to school most of my life and I am clearly traumatized by it. I am merely a child who needs some significant mental help. Please forgive me.

262. I think politically correct terms are just a new way for society to make its citizens feel inferior. I have grown up with an Aunt that was chellnged. At one time it was correct to call these people retarded. Then it was phystically and mentally challenged..Now i'm not really sure WHAT I'm supposed to call her. Retarded means "slow" which is what certain people are. They are slower physically and mentally than the norm in society. They don't care what you call them, so why should we? Adam can be very crass, but I, for one, do not believe there was any malice in his statement. I choose to treat challenged people the same way I treat those that are not slow. So in all reality, when we try to box them into a neat little politically correct term and then fight about what "they" want to be called you are doing more damage than the initial statement that was made.

263. You can't kill a whole show because one of the members has no clue on how to fit in. This show is the best experiment of human nature and you should watch without becoming emotionally attached. Look at it like the teenagers who watch, check out some nice bodies and laugh. Remember whoever wins is NOT going to share the cash with you!

265. As a mother of an 8 year old daugher with high functioning autism, I was truly offended by this guy's remark. Also I do not think it was appropriate for CBS to air it. I feel an apology by Adam would be sufficient. It is truly frustrating as a parent to get people to understand what autism is all about. I feel all the hype over this will raise some awareness. Autism is not a "disability, but rather a "different ability"!

266. The issue is not Adam and his poor choice of words.... the issue is RESPECT AND VALUE for those with developmental disabilities. The "r" word is just one of the ways to de-value this population of valuable people. Families who have children, siblings or even loved ones, go day in and day out defending the VALUE of their loved ones. This is wrong. Using the "r" word is only the evidence of the prejudice. When people start giving value where it is due, to ALL INDIVIDUALS, the "r" word will disappear.
Now is the time to respect ALL PEOPLE!

268. That comment was very "uncalled for". The show should have definately been cancelled a long time ago. It's getting worse and worse on there, getting dirtier and nastier as well. Anyway that comment should not have been said. Even though my brother does not have Autism, he is mentally handicapped, which some people would call that being "mentally retarted" or call him "retarded". He was born like that and can't help it. So there is no need for comments on a show like that--it is bad enough trying to be X-rated and show body parts without calling people names. You need to always think BEFORE you speak.
