Autism Group to CBS: Fire That Retard!

Some idiot on "Big Brother 9" has irked more people than usual by referring to people with autism as "retards." Moron.
Click to read the letter!
TMZ has obtained this letter from John Gilmore, Executive Director of Autism United, to Viacom bigwig Sumner Redstone and CBS, demanding that they take action after a segment aired on Wednesday's show featuring Adam Jasinski making the unfortunate remark. According to the letter, Gilmore claims CBS made a "conscious choice" in running the quote -- and used it for "their own personal goals."

The organization calls for "Big Brother 8" (oops) to be canceled, and expects an apology to people with autism. Gilmore also tells TMZ they've contacted the show's advertisers.

77. Has freedom of speech in this country died? Sure, what he said wasn't very nice but he has a right to say it. Whether it's nice or not neither CBS nor the person who said it should have to apologize for anything.

79. My son was diagnosed with Autism when he was just 6 yrs. of age. Today, at 21, he prevailed and overcame as much scrunity from all people from all walks of life. His story was trully one that would make every parent cry. All autistic people are "Angels" created by God.

He graduated from high school w/ a GPA of 4.0, and the only student who received a perfect attendance award, never missed school in 4 yrs. They may have the disability, but they are unique, and not morons.

There is no reason a dialogue like this one should have gone on air.

This insensitive jerk is the real moron, and his callous comments will follow him for a long time.

81. Uh, those "retards" are clearly smarter than this ignorant idiot.

My son is 6 years old and has severe autism and is more articulate than that jerk.

82. It is indeed amazing the amount of people who get all up in arms when someone says something on television they dont like. Jeez - Id imagine you must have a $#!TFIT every time you read these boards.

If your child rides the "short bus" to school and has difficulty interacting with other children his age because of his mental limitations - he's probably a retard. As for the person above who's child got a 4.0GPA - Id be curious which program that was in. "Special" needs or big boy highschool.

83. As a parent of a child diagnosed with autism, it is not difficult to see the ignorance that engulfs that person on the tv program. No one is perfect and we all need to learn a little bit of acceptance for those who were born with some type of challenge or limitation. I deal with ignorant people like that guy everytime I step out of my front door. I would like to remind people that 1 out of every 150 people has autism. Every one of us will know or be related to someone with autism at some point in our lives so be very careful about how you treat others. Derogatory terms such as retard should not be used to describe anyone let alone a wonderful child who may have autism. This country frowns upon those who use racial slurs and in this case it is no different. People with autism are valuable, kind, loving, and sensitive people who deserve our love, compassion, and respect. I think individuals such as the person in the clip have a need to degrade others because of low self esteem issues. He needs to put others down in order to make himself feel more powerful. To everyone out there who wants to use words such as retard to refer to disabled people, autism may strike your family at some point and you wouldn't appreciate someone treating your relative with such a heartless disregard. A formal apology should be made and he should be kicked off of the show.

84. Tara - you and all you other "Freedom of Speech" idiots need to get a clue. Freedom of Speech doesn't mean you can say whatever you want and no one can call you on it. It just means you can't be arrested by the government. You can't go around offending people and expect that no one is allowed to say anything back. Yes, he can say what he wants, that's his right. And its my right to call him an ignorant a$$hole for it. And its my right to tell you to zip it unless you know what you're talking about.

87. The guy looks like he has special needs too!!! that's a nice way of saying rtardd!!!

88. 13. *rolls eyes* Even though the guy is a jerk, MOVE ON. Retarded, mentally challenged---MEANS THE SAME THING. A person can't even speak anymore without fear of "offending" someone.

As a matter of fact they do not mean the same thing. People should know what they are saying befor ethey spaek and then maybe they wouldn't "fear offending someone"
re·tard 1 (rĭ-tärd') Pronunciation Key
v. re·tard·ed, re·tard·ing, re·tards

v. tr.
To cause to move or proceed slowly; delay or impede.

v. intr.
To be delayed.

n.
A slowing down or hindering of progress; a delay.

Refers to those whose IQ is below 70-75 and who lack proper adaptive social behavior. Around 3% of the population has some form of mental retardation. As a group, mentally retarded children walk and talk later, are slightly shorter and are usually more susceptible to physical problems and illnesses than other children. They also generally score lower on tests of motor ability and physical fitness, although this is more due to neglect and lack of opportunity to improve than their disability.

Now as for :

12. how many times do you have to be told?
they're not retards....they're doughheads!!!

89. Why in the world are the Autism Folks so upset? No one watches this ridiculous show .. so you go figure about 100 people actually heard the comment anyway. By bitching and complaining ... they are getting more coverage on TMZ and elsewhere than there are actual people watching that old tired show.

Posted at 2:20PM on Feb 18th 2008 by Diane

90. Adam's comment was incredibly tacky but not enough for CBS to remove him and certainly not enough for the show to be cancelled. I really think this was a lie he devised in an attempt to further himself in the game and when challenged about his comment by his partner, he realized he had really stuck his foot in his mouth (you could see it on his face). Don't waste your energy on this idiot by letting him upset you. However uncomfortable the comment makes people, the fact is that he said it, he can't take it back, and if it upsets you that much, then don't watch the show.
