Academy Screws Renfro, In Memoriam

Brad RenfroSo in case you missed it, Brad Renfro was ignored during the "in memoriam" montage on the Oscars last night. You're not gonna believe the statement the Academy gave TMZ.

The tape featured 50 movie types who died in the last year. They included actors, studio execs, makeup artists, agents, and on and on. Renfro was nowhere to be seen. We asked the Academy why and they gave us the following statement: "It is simply not possible to include everyone in that segment."

Interesting. Renfro, whose credits include "The Client," "Apt Pupil" and "Sleepers," seems like a bigger player than Margaret Gardner, the head of the international division of a P.R. firm.

Someone in Renfro's world called the slap in the face "unbelievable and disgusting." We couldn't have said it better ourselves.

226. Sometimes they show people on that "in Memory" segment, I have never even heard of. Even if they were only able to show this guy for less then a second, that would have been worth a lot more then anything else. I hope that if I was an actor (God willing one day I will be) that if I have my fifteen minutes of fame, that they will give me my fifteen seconds when I die. How do those bastards sleep at night?

227. You have to be kidding me right? Out of 130 comments the vast majority think this chronic and habitual heroin addict deserved to be praised post mortem for his work?? You want to know why Heath Ledger was included while the druggie's death wasn't--Accidental overdose (that what it was deemed to be) is a little different than deliberatly sticking a needle in your arm to get high. Ya, they made the right decison--I feel sorry for my kids that this is the kind of world that we live in where junkies and low lifes actually get praise regardless of how F'sd up they are and will have people argue their case for them.

What a sad state of affairs.

228. Through the years the Oscar's failed to mention many people who died in the film business. I only heard of Renfrew when he died. I had no idea who he was. The list goes on,,,,,

229. Grayson Hall an oscar nominee for "Night of the Iguna" was left out of that segment the year she died. An oscar nominee no less. Politics. I was shocked when Yvonne DeCarlo was left out too.

230. I was VERY disappointed to not see Brad Renfro in the memorium! Then, to top it off, Heath Ledger's tribute was a quick shot - unlike many others before it. I didn't know, or truly appreciate, half of the people shown. They absolutely should have included Brad since he passed before the deadline (no sick pun) and is an obvious talent from the most recent generation. I think TMZ and other media should hold them to a tribute spot in next year's memorial!!

231. Brad was forgotten in a rather deliberate way .
My mother Yvonne De Carlo was deliberatly voted out of the in memorium segment in 2007.
The lower staff (unnamed reported that the upper staff had held a private vote oin who gets in .
At This same academy of motion pictures arts and science ,I witness old men voting as judges of foriegn film in 1977 .They would sit upstairs eat cake drink coffie then WITHOUT SEEING THE FILM they would cast a negative ballot against the film and Price Waterhouse took the ballots and honored them .The only rule was that they had to stay upstairs where the wilsher theater was .
The acdemy has been due for a public outcry for some time .
They are an elite and largly secretive group responding to money and influence pressure .
Yet They want public respect for thier public Broadcast .
This year Oscar viewership was down 20 per cent.
The Academy will demolish itself ad a better recognition Awards group will take its place --I Hope .

232. Renfro, of course, couldn't care less at this point and chances are that his family really doesn't either. They wish they could have their son, uncle, brother and cousin back. But the Academy could have included Renfro in the memorium. After all, besides his key role in the Oscar-nominated "The Client," there was also the aforementioned "Bully" (one of the better movies of this decade) and "Ghost World" (another great film).
