John Waters is a great director from Philadelphia. Yes, he's gay. Has never been in the closet. Ricki Lake has been in several of his movies including Cry Baby with Johnny Depp. He tends to use the same actors in his movies including the late Divine and Patricia Hearst among others. He is very weird, occasionally disgusting and incredibly funny. I'd call him the modern Ed Wood but John Waters knows he's making schlock and plays it all tongue-in-cheek.

Sorry to nitpick but....Waters is from Baltimore. And he always shoots or bases his films in the Baltimore area.
And some of you people who don't know who he is, don't show your stupidity by commenting just for the sake of it. This man is a genius when it comes to film making and created one of the first Midnight Movies ever. His resume is filled with legendary cult films and a few main stream films as well. Not to mention he discovered the fabulous Ms. Divine! (rip)

Sorry, Katja, you're right. I remember seeing him in an interview saying Baltimore now. I think I went with Philly because one of my worst enemies was from Baltimore so I have a bit of a block against the city. Not fair to Waters or Baltimore.
