Celebrity Justice
"Dateline" Judged by Jury

A New York judge has refused to throw out a $100 million lawsuit brought by the family of a man who committed suicide after police, accompanied by a camera crew from "Dateline NBC: To Catch a Predator," showed up at his house to arrest him.

The lawsuit, brought by the sister of former Kaufman County, Tex. Districy Attorney Louis "Bill" Contradt Jr., alleges that NBC and police acted with deliberate indifference to Contradt and that cops had a duty to protect him. She says, "Apparently unable to face the humiliation of the public spectacle that faced him, Conradt took his own life."

Cops say Conradt solicited sex from a decoy online posing as a 13-year-old boy as part of a sting operation conducted jointly by "Dateline NBC" and the internet watch dog group Perverted Justice.

Amanda Leith, a lawyer for NBC Universal, had no comment on the ruling. The company previously called the lawsuit "completely without merit."

Bruce Baron, the lawyer for Patricia Contradt, tells TMZ, "This decision sends a strong message to law enforcement officials throughout our country, that you may not subcontract your uniform, badge, and the oath you take."

91. Good ! Sue their asses off ! Cheap entertainment and vigilantism has absolutely nothing to do with "law enforcement".

92.
That being said, I do think the media (are you listening TMZ) should
be held accountable for their actions. In years past, the purpose of
the media was to report the news, not to influence news or to be an
active participant in a news story. In this instance, Dateline seems
to have crossed the bounds between "reporting" and acting as
"enforcement" for purposes of entertainment.

How far off the mark would it be to say that there are some media
outlets (blogs, etc.) which could potentially be held responsible for
possibly causing suicidal actions by *ahem* certain celebrities due to
their vicious rumormongering and razor-tipped remarks? If, say, they
chased, hounded, belittled and ridiculed someone who might have mental
problems and this certain someone decided that they were so ashamed
and persecuted that they could no longer go on living, then.....would
those media people also be held accountable for their direct
participation in the demise of the unfortunate person they had
targeted and ridiculed in such a public way?

Just something to consider......

93. Oddly enough, the first paragraph of my comment did not come through the first time........

I can't say that I am able to work up a lot of emotion over the loss
of someone who was trolling for young boys on the internet. In a
way, you could say that pedophilia is a crime that is committed in
"secret". Once their actions are brought to light, they seem to
suddenly feel "ashamed". By bringing their actions into the open,
they are shown to be who and what they are. This man was obviously
unable to face what he had done (and as a D.A., he knew perfectly
well what he was doing and what the criminal charges would be).

97. Just think how many children have now been saved from this pervert.

98. What 'public humiliation'? Soliciting a minor, having proof of explicit text/email messages, and to show up at a house to meet a minor shows that this dude had some issues! The only 'humiliation' that this guy suffered is being a dumb a** in the first place, and going after children!
He should of had his man-junk cut off-the pervert!
Patricia Condradt is trying to make a quick buck off her brothers death.
Does anyone know why these guys go after young kids? Why not consenting adults?

99.

This is not meant to be a blanket forgiveness anyone's actions, but I have often wondered how much the accessibility of porn, the ease with which predators and other sick people have the ability to enter chat rooms and their ability to "act out" online and say things "anonymously" has on our society.

The internet is a wonderful tool for communication, education and research, but its dark side has obviously affected our society.

102. You are all missing the point here about the article. It's about a courtcase being put through because someone's rights were violated. We do live in America remember? We all have rights to due process of the law, to be judged by a jury, and innocent until proven guilty. Would you like to be the first to give up your constitutional rights? Then move to China. We don't need anymore Communist, narrow minded, Vigilante's in our country. All of you who are waiving this man's rights, whether he's guilty or not (and most likely is) are no better than Osama Bin Laden who made himself God, Judge and Jury.
I hope the suit goes through and they win, simply to prove our legal rights mean something and NO ONE is above the law, including Hollywood film crews and bad cops.

103. This judge has appropriately set the stage for the opening of NBC's deep pockets. And, appropriately so. These outrageous TV shows should be illegal. This lawsuit will hopefully put some nails in the coffins of these sleazy public spectacles.

I hope that there is a corresponding lawsuit against the police department involved. And, I hope the amount is so great that the city involved will be brought into bankruptcy because of it. And, of course, the police department should be cleaned out - from bottom to top - especially the top.

Some country of law we have here. JUST DISGUSTING.

Go empty NBC's pockets, Ms. Plaintiff.

105. Dear Cynic!
People like you disgust me! Playing God, and accusing people like myself of approving what that sick man did!
YOU GET REAL!
The position of God is already taken.
God created this sick person just as well as the rest of us. Even you who want to take away HIS position! He alone was to decide when this man's life would be over. ONLY THEN, would the man be judged by HIM! Because we all have free will while we're here!
The thing is, the man had until his last breath to reconcile with his maker. Even in a suicide, we don't know if the person had, at the very last moment, regret and remorse, and conveyed that to the ALMIGHTY SPIRIT!
But DATELINE, and its minions decided to interfere with the process of this sick man's relation with God!
God's mercy cannot be measured by humans! We are nothing! And it would be beneficial to our spirits, if we remember this!
