Ellen Torn Up Over Gay Murder

Ellen DeGeneres broke from comedy for a few minutes on the show she taped today and got deadly serious.

Ellen looked into camera and talked about the murder of Lawrence King, a 15-year-old student in Oxnard, Ca. King, who was gay, was allegedly shot to death by a fellow male student whom he asked to be his Valentine.

Ellen was on the verge of tears and as close to political as she gets. The show airs tomorrow, check local listings.

17. It's very sad that in this day and age this sort of thing still happens, I hope the murderer gets life.

18. Condolences to all concerned. I thought they were more tolerant in southern california.

19. This is a terrible incident and everyone loses...People have VERY DIFFERING opinions on the gay life style, but no one should die over it. Unfortunately every time we turn around, ACCEPTANCE of gayness is demanded and that's not acceptable either...we should, however, be TOLERANT! Oh, just a "by the way" I thought Ellen wasn't going to get political...Sure sounded political to me! Guess it's my turn...MCCAIN for President, 2008.

20. why would a gay person ask a straight person? in high school ? you know that kid was going to be given hell at school! did not deserve to die, but not very smart asking that

21. Some years ago when Ellen decided to "come out" on her comedy show, Oprah supported her by guess starring as her psychologist and got a lot of death threats. Despite the threats, Oprah supported her anyway. It was bad then, and it still is now unfortunately.

22. fruit should have given the valentine to another fruit.

Posted at 8:06PM on Feb 28th 2008 by leave the straight guys alone!

23. @ Nor Cal Reader

But it's important to bring these topics up. Considering the audiences Oprah and Ellen have, it's a good idea getting this out to such a wide range of people and showing them that things like this still happen today. It's something all parents should pay attention to.

And perhaps she kept herself from getting hysterical and saying nasty things (I know I would) because the last time she got emotional, it seemed to do more harm than good for her.

Whether Ellen decides to sob over this on public television or not, it's still an important topic and something every parent should pay attention to because they could have a child that's gay, or be the parent of a child that would murder someone for being gay.

24. I feel bad for the boy and his family but gay people cannot go around and ask a non gay person to be there "valentine." It might and it did offend a non gay person. Why can't people understand that?

25. This was a hate crime, and hopefully will be prosecuted as such. That boy had a right to show his interest in somebody just like any other person. It is sickening to read the hatred and contempt of so many people who post comments. What if this was your son, brother, friend? I hope that his family will not let the thoughts of the ignorant few tarnish this boy's memory. Please know that the majority of people are good, they just don't always post their beliefs for fear of retribution or whatever reason. And thank you Ellen for having the courage to speak out.

26. i can't believe how mean some of your comments are! this is proof to what ellen was talking about. the fact that people can make fun of a kid for getting murdered because he's gay. that's just sad

30. Ellen is a terrific, well-spoken woman who deserves to have her views aired in hope that the obvious hate as stated here will eventually end...as she clearly points out in this clip...
Thanks, TMZ, for airing this.
