Ellen Torn Up Over Gay Murder

Ellen DeGeneres broke from comedy for a few minutes on the show she taped today and got deadly serious.

Ellen looked into camera and talked about the murder of Lawrence King, a 15-year-old student in Oxnard, Ca. King, who was gay, was allegedly shot to death by a fellow male student whom he asked to be his Valentine.

Ellen was on the verge of tears and as close to political as she gets. The show airs tomorrow, check local listings.

76. I teach my kids that being gay is not a bad thing. If two people choose to love each other unconditionally, it is so much better than being in a loveless or violent or any kind of bad relationship. I have known a couple of gay people, and they were the most kindhearted people, while many straight people are mean and vicious.
To the person who commented on Ellen being a hypocrite because she doesn't express sorrow for the black on black killings, how is that hypocritical? She never said she supported it, did she? Like someone else posted, black on black killings in the inner city gangs is a choice, maybe for survival, who knows. But it is a choice. Being nice to someone, asking to be a valentine, also was a choice, a brave one at that. Was it such a bad choice that he had to be murdered? NO. A simple no thanks, I'm straight would have been fine.

80. We are talking about the death of a child here people..what the hell is wrong with those who chose who still throw slander.. I fell in "love" with Ellen years ago on her show.. I thought she was fantasicly funny, original and sincere. When she came "out of the closet"..guess what, I still loved her..she was still funny, original and sincere. Just because she has different sexual orientation from me is fine.. you know why? Because she is secure in who she is...and I am secure in who I am. All those of you who spew hatred, sarcasm, and redoric are ignorent to today society.. Who are we to judge??? Are you god?? God states to love one another! Not pass judgement... that is his job..not mine...So please...there is enough problems in this world then to waste your time passing judgement on Ellen.. You know what? At least she is honest with herself every day when she gets up...and I am sure... you don't enjoy the same freedom. God bless you Ellen ( and Porchea) for being true to yourselves and giving a rats a$$ what the rest of society thinks...and Ellen .. your wonderful! Keep up the good work in your show, your honesty, and your smile..People who really care.. don't really care about you orientation.. they care about person you are..and the issues you care about. And for those of you who will assume I am also gay...Not.. I am a happily married ( 20 Yrs.) woman ( to a man) with two children.. Both boys.. who belieives in raising my kids to be open minded to the joys of the world not the hatred that the majority of ignorent people seem to willingly share...If people only spent more time on being positive then negative, think what we could accomplish? Grow up!

84. Ellen must have way more information on the sad story then I to come to the conclusion the shooter killed Larry because of his hatred for gays.

85. My thoughts and prayers go out to Larry's family and friends. It also goes out to Branden and his family. If someone would have taught him that being gay is ok, and they are no different than the rest of us than this would probably not have happened. I commend Ellen for bringing this issue to the surface.

86. I AM SICK OF HOLLYWOOD USING THEIR CELEBRITY STATUS TO PUSH THEIR AGENDA . . . WHAT ABOUT ALL THE OTHER YOUNG PEOPLE MURDERED EVERY DAY? WHEN WILL THE HOLLYWOOD IDIOTS SPEAK OUT ABOUT WHAT HAPPENS IN THE WORLD OF everyday PEOPLE? THE SAD THING IS MOST OF THE POPULATION HAVE BECOME SHEEP AND FALL INTO WHATEVER HOLLYWOOD LEADS THEM TO. WAKE UP AMERICA DON'T START FIGHTING THE GOOD FIGHT FOR MURDERED GAYS . . . FIGHT FOR THE RIGHTS OF ALL MURDER VICTIMS AND THEIR LOVED ONES!

87. Wow, all I can say is wow after reading all of these comments. I hope and pray that many of you do not have children, and if you do I hope they are not classmates of mine.

If your child came to you and said they were gay, what would you do? Would you think it would be a normal reaction for some classmate to kill them for it? Sad.

You know what? People speak out about what is close to them, so Ellen speaking out about this particular situation is no different than a lot of other situations. When Jesse Jackson speaks out about what happens to a black person you do not hear people saying why doesn't he speak out about white people.

I really am surprised at how deep the ignorance runs in the comment section of this site. I guess it is a good thing for many of you that there is not a big movement to kill stupid people or you would all have to live looking over your shoulder.

If my children were to receive a valentine from a same sex classmate, I would hope they would be flattered that someone thought that way about them and just let them know they are not interested, if they aren't. I for one, would not love my chid any less, nor think thier life was any less meaningful and precious if they liked boys or girls or boys who looked like girls, or whatever. It is called unconditional love for a reason folks.

88. What makes you nincompoops think that just because someone wants their lifestyle "tolerated" and justified that the rest of us must oblige you? Why don't you oblige us and keep it out of our lives and off the streets, - where's YOUR tolerance? The fact is that neither of us is obliged to tolerate the other (as is continually displayed by gay public behavior). Your lifestyle is a sickness (I know, conceding the fact would be admitting your degeneracy - so, you won't) and will not ever be accepted by decent minded people. So, you try to change the definitions of things and change laws, - whatever. Truth is still truth, murder is murder, and gay is indecent and morally wrong.

I'll just sit back and wait for the intolerant gay-speak and heterophobic drivel in rebuttal.

89. I'm disgusted at all of the rude comments on here...if it wasn't for Ellen bringing this toattention, I would have never of heard of it. I'm glad she said something about it, because it makes people think...how bad society is today that people are being killed because they are gay. And its not just gay people...she also said different "groups" meaning, people of different color, of different race...it's about time someone who is out in the open and has a fan base finally is serious about something this, and has the guts to go on national television and stand up for Larry who lost his life and the rest of the people in the world that is faced with tragedies like this everyday. What if it was your brother, cousin, friend or family member...im pretty sure you would want someone to stand up for your family and make this aware to people all across the country...Ellen did a good thing!

90. Kelly, I agree. I still wonder if he wasn't teased or baited into approching this other male. 15 is a hard and confusing age. Didn't we all have confusion about our sexuality in high school? Just sad.
