28. Sorry guys, but 1981's "Ordinary People", while loosely based on Mary's son's suicide, was not about the suicide of her eldest son, but about the guilt of the younger son when he and his brother were out sailing, got caught in a storm, and the older son accidentally drowned. The younger son, played by Timothy Hutton, was pretty messed up and tried to commit suicide before the film began. He carried the tremendous guilt that he could not save his drowning older brother, the stronger jock. As it eventually turned out in the movie, he was the stronger of the two, surviving the capsized boat by hanging on while he watched his brother as he was swept away by the waves.
