Brit to Lawyers: Dang, Stop Dinging Me With Fees

Britney SpearsTMZ has learned Britney Spears' conservators are ballistic over the legal bills she is being asked to pay in her custody fight -- bills totaling more than a million bucks for a five-month period.

Sources tell us the conservators have filed documents with the court and will appear on Monday, challenging lawyers' fees in the case. K-Daddy's lawyer, Mark Vincent Kaplan, has asked for around $500,000 for the five-month period from October 2007 through February 2008 and has filed papers demanding that Brit pay his bill. The court has ordered Brit to pay K-Fed's reasonable attorney's fees.

We're told Brit's last law firm, Trope and Trope, has billed her more than $600,000.

Sources say the conservators feel they're being fleeced and the bills are inflated. In particular, they're upset that multiple lawyers on Brit's side have attended various court hearings -- they say unnecessarily. The conservators will argue this is a simple custody case and bills of that magnitude are simply outrageous.

121. I think that Britney should have to pay. If she hadn't gone nuts, Kevin wouldn't have had to set up all of those court dates. When you play you have to pay.

122. I think that is outrageous, it sounds like someone is padding the bill. She has money so they must think they have a right to part of it. What exactly have they done to help her? I don't see her winning much, shouldn't they be able to make things better? I think she needs to get away from overpriced Hollywood/Beverly Hills attorneys and try one from another town without so much show. Just saying, I don't think she got her moneys worth from these people.

123. One way or the other Brit Brat is going to have to pay. How much we don't know. Some people are so angry at Kev because he is taking care of the kids and isn't in the same situation and state that Brit Brat is. I suppose some people would be happier if Kev was acting more like Brit Brat ...then who would care for the children. These same people wouldn't be happy with any of the other choices of people left to take care of the children. Whatever we say Brit Brat is going to have to break some off to everyone that is involved.

124. She should be forced to pay because she's so damn annoying.

>> Oddly there has been no more about this in the prss. You'd think that Sands would be dying to do a press release about it. And it's been 3 days!!! Maybe he's waiting for next week for good measure. Spekaing of no press releases - Kaplan didn't feel the need to brief the press on that depo did he?! hehe. At least Phillips doesn't feel the need to stick her face in front of a camera with every small development!

>>I know. But if as you say you get what you pay for. Then maybe Fedex shoudl hire someone in his budget.

Isn't it incredible that you can go hire someone you can't pay for and get your rich ex-wife to front the bill because she can. I read that heather McCartney dropped her legal team because she couldn't afford them. Imagine how much more money Macca has compared to Brit... Well. She got £20mil or something didn't she. That's incredible compared with Fed's $4mio (i.e. $1mio + half of house sale).......

Anyway. She hasn't lost. Yet. I think the judge said she had to pay at the first request of $100000ish because she has a larger income.

126. Who is watching the kids, you can bet you a$$ it isn't k-loser, its a nanny or maybe two. The only reason he married Britney was to get money in the first place. Let his sorry tale go to work and support his kids and all of his partying ways. He needs to pay his own bills. He is worse than Britney ever thought of being.

127. Well, halleluah. The key words here are 'reasonable fees.' I hope the judge has a brain in his head, or better yet, some down to earth no-nonsense common sense. I'd like to see Judge Judy rip into this lot.

128. Yep,brit should be forced to pay up.

129. WAKE UP PEOPLE! Stop feeling bad for this selfish piece of trash! She brought this ALL upon herself! If you want to feel sorry for somebody then feel sorry for the two boys she abandoned and screwed up in the head.

130. When an attorney is hired they are hired to speak for you in a court of law. Well Kaplan was hired by K-Fed so K-Fed should pay Kaplan as K-Fed is the one who hired Kaplan and not Britney Spears. It would be K-Fed who would have had to tell Kaplan that his fees would be paid by Britney because it is obvious he could not afford Kaplan. It was then and only then that Kaplan agreed to this as he saw the publicity for himself all over! Remember there is no such thing as bad publicity. And as far as Trope and Trope they also need to be reminded that Britney could not go to court many times as she had many problem because of Sam Lufti, etc. Then I would ask to see comparable billing. I honestly dont see how Britney can get out of paying them something.

131. If Britney wasnt a homewrecker non of this would happen

132. Did Kevin hire her attorneys too? They ran up over half the bill and she got nothing out of it because she refused to follow their advice. Kevin's (and her) attorneys were just responding to events in her life, and she ran up the costs by constantly missing her appointments. Maybe it would be good for her to learn that she's not royalty. She appears to charge quite a lot for her services and none of you complain about that. Why shouldn't the attorneys be paid their going rates? It's not their fault that she refused to respond to court orders as required. Do you think she could have avoided all this with one good nip slip or coochie shot for the judge? I think not. She's going to have to learn to act like a normal decent person if she's ever to recover from this.

I seriously doubt that it was K-Fed who told Kaplan what the law is. Kaplan is an experienced domestic relations attorney and did not need to be reminded that California Family Code section 2030(a) obligates (the language in the statute is "shall") the court to order the party with greater financial ability to pay the reasonable attorneys fees and costs of the other party. If you want to see the statute that K-Fed's fee request is filed under, go to:

http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/cgi-bin/displaycode?section=fam&group=02001-03000&file=2030-2034

As for Britney's former lawyers, the fact remains that regardless of the reasons they had to defend Brit's conduct while she did everything to lose custody and visitation, they put in a lot of time preparing for and making court appearances on her behalf. That's what she hired them to do. Whether Brit showed up or not, the attorneys' had to. Doesn't matter whether it was because she was scared, decided to sleep late thaqt day, or even whether Lutfi prevented her from showing up. The attorneys showed up. According to TMZ.s story, what Pap Spears and Andrew Wallet are steamed about is that every time Trope & Trope went to court, depositions, etc., they took several attorneys -- all of which billed their time. That is a legitimate gripe, as there probably was not reason why one attorney, possibly assisted by a paralegal, could not have handled these appearances. No need to bring the herd along.

Not sure what you mean by "comparable billing" though. I look at it this way. If I go to an expensive restaurant and order a steak and bottle of champagne, at the end of the meal I'm not entitled to pay less because I could have ordered a burger and fries at In-N-Out Burger.
