"Lost" Diary -- Another Woman

"So because last week's 'Lost' was so good, does that automatically mean that this week's has to suck?"

That was the IM I got from my friend Chris on Thursday morning and now I have the fear of God in me. Is it possible? Can "Lost" be that good last week and this week too? One can only hope ...

For all you "Lost" Diary newbies, here's how it goes: I gather with a group of friends watching "Lost," writing what happens on the show as it happens, and throwing in my two cents along the way. I am watching tonight's episode of "Lost" alone as Ari and Lauren are in Las Vegas. How is it I get emails from total strangers wanting to watch "Lost" with me and my own friends bail on my constantly? Let's roll:

9:00 -- Time for my new favorite game: flashback or flashforward? Now, I know all we have had so far this season are flashforwards, but I don't think we're done with flashbacks just yet -- at least I hope. I'm going flashback, but I know I'm probably wrong.

9:01 -- Hang on a sec, isn't Tom dead? Has to be a flashback.

9:02 -- "Welcome to the island." -- Harper to Juliet. Winner!!!

9:03 -- "We want you to feel at home." Ben to Juliet. As always, even the most gracious words sound ultra-creepy when Ben says them.

9:04 -- Faraday and Charlotte have gone missing, and on cue it begins raining, the island starts whispering and Harper appears out of nowhere. I'm assuming she's real, but you never know with "Lost."

9:07 -- Ok, so Faraday and Charlotte are headed to the tempest (whatever that is) to release the gas and kill everyone -- or at least that's what Ben thinks.

9:08 -- "Ben is exactly where he wants to be." -- Harper. Didn't Miles say the same thing when Kate had him tied up in that shed?

9:09 -- Under the cover of whispers (yes, I said whispers), Harper disappears. Seriously, WTF?!!?!??

9:10 -- All our favorite dead Others are back this week. Good times.

9:11 -- Apparently Harper is Goodwin's wife. Now, we know Harper is still alive and we know Goodwin and Juliet got it on -- so I guess that means Juliet is a slut.

9:12 -- Once again, Jack asks someone a really, REALLY important question -- but when they don't answer, he just let's it go. Jack might be a great doctor, but he'd make a shitty cop.

9:13 -- Based on their conversation, it sure seems like Faraday and Charlotte are planning on doing what Ben thinks they are planning on doing. Ben's never really wrong.

9:17 -- Kate, for a change, is not acting like an idiot and asking all the right questions.

9:18 -- Wait, scratch that.

9:19 -- "It's very stressful being an Other, Jack." -- Juliet

9:20 -- Goodwin busts in on Ben and Juliet with the offer of an egg salad sandwich -- that sly dog!

9:21 -- Harper knows Juliet has been sleeping with her husband and apparently Harper is afraid of what Ben would do. And did you catch Harper's "You look just like her comment"? Has to be Annie, right?

9:22 -- Claire wants to interrogate Miles to find out why he and his crew are really on the island -- and she's actually making sense, which confuses me. Charlie dying has done wonders for her.

9:23 -- "Don't you want to know whose boat it is?" -- Claire

9:24 -- Ben and Locke are throwing out so many good quotes, I can't even keep up.

9:26 -- Another fantastic Ben/Locke scene. First off, why doesn't Locke see that Ben is right? They are on the same side in this. And secondly, the man the freighter people work for has to be Penny's dad, right?

9:30 -- Juliet in a bikini. Not bad. Not bad at all.

9:31 -- "What's Ben gonna do?" -- Goodwin. Hmmm, something tells me we are about to find out.

9:32 -- Apparently what he can do is send Goodwin off to die.

9:33 -- Jack and Juliet find Kate passed out in the bushes -- and Juliet uses that as an opportunity to leave Jack behind.

9:34 -- I need silence please -- Locke and Ben scene, Locke and Ben scene, Locke and Ben scene!!!

9:35 -- "I taped over the game." -- Ben. Has the playing of any tape on "Lost" ever not been completely awesome? I am downright giddy right now.

9:36 -- Ladies and gentlemen, Charles Widmore.

9:37 -- "If 5,000 people came out to see a piece of mold, how many people do you think would come here to see you?" -- Ben to Locke

9:38 -- Ben just told Locke that the Widmore file is "the last bargaining chip" he has left. Now that I don't believe.

9:39 -- Last chance -- who is Ben's man on the boat?

9:43 -- Hold the phone -- Jack just got a straight answer out of Kate!!! First time for everything.

9:44 -- Out of all the creepy things Ben has said and done, where does cooking a ham rank? It's got to be up there.

9:45 -- Zach and Emma are on the list, apparently. I love all the "list" talk, but when do we actually get to find out something about it?

9:46 -- WARNING: MANUAL ENTRY OVERRIDE DENIED

9:52 -- Faraday is trying to say that he's trying to make the gas inert. He'd be more convincing if he weren't wearing a GAS MASK!!!

9:52 -- Cat fight.

9:54 -- Ok, so Faraday succeeded in making the gas inert so that Ben couldn't use it against them later. I'm having some problem figuring out what to make of all this.

9:56 -- Ben couldn't just tell Juliet that Goodwin was dead, he had to show her his rotting, decaying corpse.

9:57 -- "How could you possibly not understand that you're mine?" -- Ben to Juliet. That's not creepy, it's just kinda sad (with a touch of crazy thrown in).

9:59 -- Jack and Juliet finally kiss. I don't have Lauren hear to gauge the female reaction, but let me try. "That slut!"

10:00 -- "See you guys at dinner." -- Ben

"So because last week's 'Lost' was so good, does that automatically mean that this week's has to suck?"

Eh, guess so.

Look I can't flat out declare this episode a clunker, but it really did only one thing for me and that's question my undying love for Ben. I know he wants to protect the island at all costs, but I am starting to doubt how pure his intentions really are. Is he really all about the island -- or is he all about himself?

The rest of this episode (I think we all suspected the freighter was Widmore's) I could have done without. I give it a C+. The Ben/Locke scenes were great and Juliet in a bikini did not disappoint. Hey, I'm still a guy here!

Here's my question to you this week: Even though "Lost" has cut its season down to 16 eps (and even less after the strike) we're still getting dud episodes. Is "Lost" better served with even fewer eps, say 12? Works for HBO, Showtime and FX. Just a thought.

Over at thelostdiary.com, I do a question-and-answer column every week. I had to skip this week because my laptop is in the shop and I can't get to all the email. Don't feel like you have to ask a straightforward "Lost" question. Have fun with it. Click here to send me a question.

76. #70 Because Ben is an amazingly creepy actor and he brings so much to the show. He always keeps you guessing and he's always playing mind games. he pushes everyone's buttons and he learns a little bit more about that person every time. which he, of course, exploits to his advantage.

The show is more that just eye candy. although seeing Sawyer and Sayid sure are an added bonus.

77. Annie is not Ben's mom, she's the Dharma girl he fell in love with. Remember he made her some dolls, or something like that. They showed her in a flashback last year I think. i agree Ben's man on the boat is Micheal...wonder where Walt is though. My burning, burning question is why does Sayid end up working for Ben. Sayid is usually the smart guy on the show, and fair (he even makes torturing Sawyer and Ben seem like the right thing to do....), so I cannot buy that he ends up being ben's paid assassin.

78. Emily is Ben's mom, Annie is his childhood sweetheart that he met on the the island. What I want to know is what happened to Annie. Did she die during her pregnancy with Ben's baby, thus his quest to get a fertility specialist on the island. I think Michael has to be the spy on the boat. It makes sense why Michael and Walt appeared to leave the island. When Ben told Juliet that she belongs to him, it was sufficiently creepy to make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. Ben's reference that his people would be storming the barracks if they still wanted him implies that somehow they are done with him. What does that mean for the rest of the Others?

79. For once, I don't agree with you on the quality of the episode. I thought it was great. The only things that disappointed me were that neither Kate or Juliet seriously beat down Charlotte. No matter what, I do not trust her. Learning a bit more about Ben's weaknesses was great. And it's obvious that Michael is Ben's man-on-the-boat.

80. i too wonder how ben is getting information being as he is a prisoner...his only outside contact has been miles and that suspious 3.2 million dollar comment...maybe that was code for something ....possible scenerio...miles has been bens mole to the outside world and freighter people ...miles could be an "other"...ben and others (harper and miles) have had this back up plan...how else would ben know where the freigter people were headed...we all know ben is 2 steps ahead...it was mentioned ben is where he wants to be and same was said for miles...i believe michael is on the boat but not the spy...i think it is miles...i think the freighter people just wanted to inert the gas from ben so it never happens again (like when he killed dharma.)...that was there main mission...ben is lying to locke...locke better be careful or he is going to blow it for everyone which is what i think he ends up doing in the end

Lisa Lee.......I totally agree!!! Miles is the Man on the boat, and Lock ends up blowing it for everyone in the end. Remember Hurley telling Jack in His flashforward He's sorry He went with Locke. Jack bowed his head and nodded.

81. Boring terrible episode. We could have missed it and never known any of this stuff (nor cared). The writers must not know which way they are going....very disappointing. They could have at least told us who Ben's person on the boat is.
Besides, we already have too many mysteries for them to resolve - why add another with this new "blow up the whole island" scenario?
And we are really HUGE fans of Lost!

82. I know that we have to stretch our minds a lot of times with Lost, but in the end it's never TOO huge of a stretch when we have all the info. That being said, it is WAY too complicated to have Sayid be the man on the boat. It has to be Michael. It was said that he would return in about 4-5 episodes anyway. I mean think about it people, really think about it. Sayid is the man on the boat? NO

As for JACK (you people spell his name JAKE a lot) and Juliet, I agree they are both on the rebound. However, I get the feeling that Jack is one of those guys that is always seemingly on the rebound. He saves women. He is saving Juliet, but the great thing about her is that she really can exist on her own. Kate will never be ok alone. She is too volatile!

83. it's walt on the boat. remember minkowski saying to desmond after he had one of his time travel episodes and desmond was looking in the mirror, 'you look older right'? i guess the time travel ages you. this also would explain the 'taller walt'

84. I think Locke is Ben's man on the boat... he is the most dedicated to maintaining the sanctity of the island. Plus, I assume Ben has figured out how to manipulate time. With time travel possible and Locke's blind devotion to all things island- I think he is the only person Ben would "trust" spying on someone clearly intent on ruining him.

85. harper = smoke monster, e.g. the scene with eko and his brother before the smoke monster kills eko

86. OK I onylread the first page of comments. Sorry is any of this has already been addressed.

Anyone notice that Juliet's hair is usually curly but there were some scenes when it was REALLY curly( like in the flashback) and then the jungle doo. Still curly but not all nice and maintained. My question is why did it get all straight at times. Like completely stick straight. What time were we in then?

87. I am thinking that Ben has that mind time travel condition and that explains how he knows what is going to happen. Therefore everything he has and continues to do is based on his attempt to stop or ensure that something happens. For example....he knows how desperate Juliet is for love and he manipulates her into acting on his will. Much the same as he does on Locke, Jack and all the others. And it appeared to me that this mind traveling condition also can alter the past; hence, the note about his constant in the scientist notebook after speaking to Desmond.

Also, I think Harper was brought to the island to be Juliet's constant.....remember how she was a celebrity when visiting with Harper?? Celebrity as in a Oceania survivor???

88. THANK YOU TMZ!

You are my balance.

I watched that episode and thought . . . what happened??

Do they rotate writers!?!?

I just wasn't getting it, and I thought it was me.

But thanks to TMZ . . . which is turning out to be my LOST "support group" . . . I'm SO GLAD to know I'm not the only one who was SO eager to watch this week, and seemed lost in the script!

I want to know why SAID is offing people . . .

I loved that episode with the woman he loved / hated . . . what is UP with Said!

Desmond . . . ? What's going on with him?

Who are the final 6.

How'd they finally get off the island -- I've been waiting months to find that out!

What's going on with Jack when he stays on the island?

Are the characters' lives REALLY that interconnected??

But, for now . . . thanks for making me feel 'NORMAL' this morning for feeling quite lost myself. I know it just wasn't me!!

89. Wait- I've always thought that Locke was the man on the boat b/c of his love of the island- but in truth the only one Ben trusts is himself. What if Ben is his own man on the boat?

Posted at 1:59PM on Mar 7th 2008 by Jess

90. man on the boat - locke's dad?
