Did David Cook Rip-Off "Eleanor Rigby"?

166. EDHGirl - completely agree 100% whatever people, get over it. The surviving Beatles should be greatful that folks still loves to cover their albums, BUT Doxology, while a great band, need to get over themselves. They didn't write the piece. It is Eleanor Rigby, isn't it? You can only sing the melody in so many ways, no matter how rocked up it is.

167. folks. it's all about the recorded version. check out what david recorded. it was released this morning on itunes. it's a complete rip from doxology from start to finish. and for heavens sake people, im not talking about the vocals. the instruments. that's what arrangement means. this is not even an argument. seriously people. the intro, the same, the verses, the same, chorus, the same, bridge hits, the same, acapella chorus, the same, its all the same the format and everything. check it out.

The band Doxology is great as is David You people waste your time writting stuff & I bet you 100 to 1 that Cook & Doxology are sitting back taking it all in ready to join a stage together! I give credit to any one who is on stage good or bad because at least they are doing something & not sitting behind the screen writting loads of crap they really have no clue about & like someone stated earlier the band nor david is making as big a deal out of it as many of you & no one is trying to cash in on anything. If anything they are both getting nothing but noticed out of this , you guys are making both David & Doxology A big hit. I respect them both & liked the way both performed this song.

170. not even a ripoff... i listened to both versions. Davids is even a faster tempo. i think dox also used a different instrument in theirs as well. the melody arrangements were both very similar to the original yet still slightly different from one another. David simply out sang Dox and they just want some popularity the cheap way! plus, there are thousands of versions of that song around the world. the chances of one rocker making an arrangement similar to another's is very understandable!

171. Plain and simple they both (Doxology and David Cook) Rocked the hell out of the song... The Beatles should be happy that an incredible song that they wrote has been spun to sound fresh and new no matter whose arrangement it is... Now can we get on to more important things like the fact that our brothers, friends and fellow country men are dying over in iraq right now. I mean I don't mean to spoil this idiotic fun but come on. I think the least we can do is pay a little bit of respect to these guys come on they are FIGHTING FOR OUR FREEDOM you know!!!

173. I most definitely agree with Fanito Bandito. These Doxology guys are just pissed because he covered it much better. How the hell can you be angry that someone else's cover of the same song sounds "similar" to YOUR cover of the song. It's Lennon and McCartney's song to begin with, and DC's version sounded nothing like that Doxology crap, it was much much better and had a lot more feeling behind it. Everyone tries to get their 15 minutes of fame I guess.

174. This is stupid! Yes, they recorded a cover of the song- but the only reason it sounds even remotely the same is because it is the same FREAKIN' song... hello, is anyone there?? If you listen to both versions (and I have about 10 times now) David's version has a faster paced rock edge to it and the Doxology - who in the hell are they anyways?- version is much slower paced and they do not rock it out like David did. They don't even have the rights to the song to complain about anyway! So, what is their point? They are deluded to think he stole anything from them. This is just something for them to try to get 15 minutes of fame out of.... Sorry guys, but David Cook is on American Idol and he earned his right to be there.... stop trying to take that away from him and besides he has probably never even heard of your band before, just like the rest of us haven't you whinny bitches!

175. I don't think he ripped them off. It's a similar arrangement, but so what? If anything, they should be glad that he's drawing attention to their music. Look what Jason Castro did for Jeff Buckley's "Hallelujah." Stop crying already!!

178. People, this is not even close to what David sang. I'm trying to find similarities but they are few. I guess David must really be a threat to win the whole thing!!! Doxology's version put me to sleep. David's version was alive and exciting.

179. I had never heard of Doxology until the American Idol incident. But hey I agree the Beatles did it first, its up for grabs. I like the way David performs, but then I hate pop music, I am from the rock n roll generation and much perfer his style than any of the others. On the contestants forgetting lyrics that is worse than singing bad, that to me is a ticket to exit. Rock on David Cook.

180. What a stupid accusation. This isn't a musical arrangement competition- it's a singing competition. Why are these the first people to complain about someone else ripping off their arrangement when it's been done on Idol a million times. David Archaleta ripped off Eva Cassidy's version of "Imagine" the last week and that horrendous version of "8 Days a Week" was a rip off of the Lorrie Morgan version. Katharine McPhee's HUGE hit with the "Over the Rainbow" performance was another Eva Cassidy rip. These guys don't own the song and their lucky they got the rights to release it in the first place. Who cares if someone used their arrangement? It's not like David got up there and said that he arranged the song- all he did was sing it.
