Did David Cook Rip-Off "Eleanor Rigby"?

David Cook was on fire with his rendition of the Beatles classic "Eleanor Rigby" on "Idol" last night -- but a Seattle band claims he swiped the arrangement from them.

The band DOXOLOGY recorded their version of the track a year and a half ago, putting it up on iTunes and on the band's MySpace page. The band's manager tells TMZ the song is what they're best known for and have played it at nearly 200 shows.

Click to hear! The manager says the band has no intention of suing, but they're trying to get in touch with the show -- they want some props.

"Idol" tells TMZ the contestants pick their song and present their ideas for the arrangement to the show's musical department and work with them on it.

Welcome to Hollywood.

167. Let's talk about David Cook's hair. He has the worst comb-over since Donald Trump.
Admit your balding Davey, Comb-overs are pathetic!

168. Doxology is just trying to cash in on the hype. I just listened to their version of Eleanor Rigby and I still think David's was better. I agree with what a lot of people wrote already: How can you accuse someone of ripping off your arrangement when you're doing a cover of a song that's already been done?! I'm sure there are a thousand garage bands all across the globe that came up with the exact same arrangement as David and Doxology. When you're doing a rock cover of a song that's already been written it's not a shock that several versions are going to be similar. These guys are exactly what's wrong with the industry: they want to blame everyone else for their misfortune. If they were that good they'd be signed. People would have heard of them without TMZ.

169. You guys know you're making a much bigger deal out of this then Doxology is right? I'm reading all the comments telling them to stop crying and whatnot, but Doxology isn't crying at all. Their manager's the one that went on a tirade to TMZ but if you look at the actual band's page, they only have one teeny tiny blog about the situation. A blog where they openly say they respect Cook and thought he gave a good performance. They'd just like a nod for their arrangement being used. That's it. That's all they want. It's really not that big a deal.

170. So, another band called Doxology is claiming that David Cook stole their version of Eleanor Rigby. Wait a tick, didn't the Beatles do that song? I am sorry, but can anyone say "shameless promotion?" I am sure that this song has been covered several times and every band that covered the song thought they had an original rendition, but no matter how you slice it, the Beatles did the song first. Just a little hint for Doxology, if you want props for a song, try getting props for an ORIGINAL SONG!

171. puhleeeze....hiw many different ways can you arrange the song anyway...Iwas ready to condemn the guy, but it's really not all that similar

172. Doesn't even sound like the rockin' way that David Cook did it. He started really slow and quiet, then ROCKED it out, then ended slow & quiet. This band is bland.... they're dreaming if they think it compares to David's version.

173. they do different peoples arrangements of original tunes all the time, whitney's arrangement of dolly's partons tune gets done all the time, the list goes on and on and the judges may mention whose arrangement it is but not even nearly always and nobody gets accused of ripping these people off.cook made these guy's famous,SHUTUP AND SING!!!!!!!the manager should have been more gracious about it and just said "hey david cook did a great rendition of our arrangement" just like lionel ritchie said the week before.
hernadez was bad but there must of been more country fans than latin stripper fans because that chick should have been gone, gone, gone, actually hernadez should not have said he worked at a pizza place,i think people thought he was being dishonest.just my opinion folks.
HEY AUSSIE craig
love INXS,loved them when micheal was alive but now fortune is fronting them and he is canadian i can take some pride, even if he totally mimics micheal,it works, what can i say, love you aussie's,alway's wanted to meet and take one home to mum.:)

174. David Cook's sound is much better than these guys. Cook deserves to win. As Paula said he is a "dark horse" and rocks way better than any of the others! Hope he beats out the irish girl because he has a way better voice

177. Doxology's Version
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P9UE3RkxsR0

David Cook's Version
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k8VAeYwTNCs&feature=related

Godhead's Version
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yWiRcuK6U6k

Now... tell me... WHO has the version most similar to each other? oh snaps! Doxology and David Cook??? Isn't this why this TMZ story is about the two? If any one says that Godhead's version sounds like Doxology's, you have to get your ears checked, maybe get yourself a hearing aid because I don't think you hear the differences clearly. And the only noticeable difference between Doxology's and David Cook's is the intro.

And I think most of you hatin' are just listening to the first few seconds and commenting. Maybe you're not even listening at all. And also, you have to take into consideration, Doxology was at a local venue, which means, quality of sound will not be as great as American Idol's. Equipment is a lot more professional and of high quality. Get Doxology on that show, and you'll see them drop out of A.I. like Mario Vasquez, with a recording contract, with a major label. :-)

179. EDHGirl - completely agree 100% whatever people, get over it. The surviving Beatles should be greatful that folks still loves to cover their albums, BUT Doxology, while a great band, need to get over themselves. They didn't write the piece. It is Eleanor Rigby, isn't it? You can only sing the melody in so many ways, no matter how rocked up it is.

180. folks. it's all about the recorded version. check out what david recorded. it was released this morning on itunes. it's a complete rip from doxology from start to finish. and for heavens sake people, im not talking about the vocals. the instruments. that's what arrangement means. this is not even an argument. seriously people. the intro, the same, the verses, the same, chorus, the same, bridge hits, the same, acapella chorus, the same, its all the same the format and everything. check it out.
