Jason Castro: Ditches Orphans for "Idol"?

Jason Castro of It's 3:00 AM. Jason Castro is asleep in his bed. Two phones ring: one has Simon Cowell on the line, the other is a group of orphans in Honduras who need a home. Which phone does Jason answer?

Soft-spoken Jason Castro, a junior at Texas A&M, was inducted into the Aggie Mens Club this past fall -- an organization that provides a "social atmosphere of Christian fellowship and brotherhood." They're currently on a trip to Honduras, donating time and money ($14,000) to build homes and orphanages.

TMZ spoke to Chris, the Club's president, who's now in the country's poverty-stricken capital, Tegucigalpa. Chris spoke highly of Jason -- saying Jason would likely have joined the 14 guys who are in Honduras right now ... but for "Idol."

BTW, the guys way down south caught Jason's performance Tuesday night -- thank God for Honduras cable.

33. No way should TMZ be slagging on Jason - this kid seems so sweet and unaffected by his new gig on AI. I doubt he makes it to Top 5, probably Top 6, but I would love to see him win. Look at him - the camera LOVES him as we call all plainly see.

34. Jason is a doll. I wish him the best of luck and I know that when he does make it big, he will help the less fortunate. That's the kind of guy he is.

35. Well atleast he's in the country that supports HIM. When are people going to stopping worrying about all the other countries and start worrying about the one thats made them who they are? Obviously it can't be that hard for foreigners to get in this country *To provide for their families* it happens everyday, just look at all the hotels and 7-11's, advice when your on a trip in the US take a translater. QUIT WORRYING ABOUT OTHER COUNTRIES KIDS AND FEED OUR OWN!

37. I think it okay that hechose idol. Its not like hes stopped caring about orphans. Idol is a once in a lifetime opprotunity and i am sure he will go back after and help them.

38. "Ditches orphans for idol"?! Are you freakin kidding me? You obviously have nothing else to write about and must enjoy trying to ruin someone elses character and dream.

39. I love this guy; he seems extraordinarily warm and genuine. Now I read that he's a Christian. Doesn't surprise me in the least.

41. This article sounds like a desperate attempt to find something controversial about Jason Castro. In fact all this article does is illustrate what a good person he is. The very fact that he is a member of such a group shows the public what a good-hearted person he is and gives people yet another reason to vote for him. Also, what gives the author of this article the right to judge Jason for choosing to take a chance for something that he is obviously very passionate about, when being on American Idol will allow him to be a really good influence upon the world. I very much doubt that the people who came up with this article is involved in humanitarian projects like this, and yet they invade people's privacy, trying to make them look bad and crticize them....as if thats a worthy occupation!! (The word hypocritical comes to mind!)

42. If this is the worst that TMZ can find on Jason Castro, he's doing alright! What a beautiful, classy, and talented individual he is.

43. if you guys are so worried about these orphans why dont you go help them. i dont think there is one person who would have done different. so hes suppose to give up his dream for something that probably wont make a huge difference if hes there or not? hes gonna help even more when hes on idol gives back.

44. Oh PLEASE!! It's bizarre to me that this issue is coming up at all! This young man is 20 or 21 years old and from what we've all heard he is a really nice kid and has been doing good works and outreach for years in needy communities. As well, he is blessed with charm and talent and kindness. Why is it questioned that he is following his dream at this moment instead of being in Honduras with his mates? Plenty of time for all of his passions. I ask anyone who criticizes Jason for doing the AI thing right now to ask yourselves "And what exactly were you doing or had done by the time you were 21?".
Give it a break, already. The world needs more young people like Jason. He's been blessed with wonderful talent and a giving heart...and he is sharing that. That's enough, no?
