Massive Firing -- You Can't Do Dat to Brit!

UCLA Medical Center is terminating at least 13 staff members and suspending at least six others for looking at the confidential medical records of Britney Spears while she was hospitalized there.

The LA Times reports that in addition to these firings, at least six doctors will face disciplinary action for snooping into her computerized records at the hospital.

According to the Times, UCLA officials admitted this wasn't the first time Spears' privacy had been compromised. Several employees were caught snooping into her records in September 2005 after she gave birth to her first son, Sean Preston, at Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center. A few of those employees were fired as well.

Spears was admitted to the hospital on January 31 -- after being placed on a "5150 hold" when it was determined she posed a danger to herself or others. She was released February 6.

47. UCLA is a University Hospital, for training / teaching College students, on an Intern basis. There is a high rate of Non-accomplishment in the Intern community, in all fields of training. There are MANY waiting in the wings to take their place, and the only way they were caught, is to be seen on camera, talk about it, or violate security proceedures. There is a decoy / baiting system set up in most security systems to disclose violators, and expose the identities of those in code violatoins, along with the regular means of human interaction that, when become an issue, are brought to the attention of the Director of Services, and you get to take a POLYGRAPH, or are TERMINATED

49. #36. Well, I guess that pretty much validates TMZ's assertion that "sources inside UCLA Medical Center tell TMZ" when TMZ was reporting on Britney during her hospitalization.

just me..... I just googled "sources inside UCLA" and found that TMZ did break stories using that phrase. So TMZ is the cause of them getting busted. But that's a good thing. Right?

50. 16. That behavior is outrageous. Doctors are no better than the staff, and should be fired too. Their ethics went right out the window. This should be interesting in the days to come. britaculous / lawdawg - get ready - here come the lawyers, and here come the law suits. Bella

25. The hospital firing of the nurses but giving the doctors disciplinary action is discrimination. Why do the doctors receive a lesser punishment when what they did was just as bad?

Posted at 7:09PM on Mar 14th 2008 by George Clooney is a CryBaby

***************************************

George, Bella ... The hospital cannot "fire" the doctors because the physicians are not hospital employees. Doctors have hospital privileges, which allows them to admit their patients to the facility and to practice on the premises. The disciplinary action that is being taken is suspension of their privileges. The doctors have appeal rights, so it is not as easy to show them the door as would be the case for someone under the hopital's direct control.

51. My My, looks like TMZ and the other rag Mag's are losing their inside scoop.. All I can say is, IT's about time.........

52. Moe -- How do you think all the info leaked out when Brit was in the Hospital, they don't allow little birdies to hang on the drapes or little tale telling mice hiding in the corners.. It was from employees who were paid well for the info they leaked, and no sir, just because the records are there does not mean they are open to the other employees to read, that is a privacy violation. Only, and I repeat Only, the Doctors and Nurses treating that patient are allowed to view those records. And since this is a privacy issue, and that is mandated by the Fed's, guess who might come in to visit with these people.

53. In response to: 4. Kinda hard to have records there and not read them. Gimmee a break.

Posted at 8:02PM on Mar 14th 2008 by Moe

Unless the records were printed and laying out for the whole world to see (which I doubt), the people who looked either had to call them up on the computer or actually go get the file and look at it. They knew they were doing wrong when they did it. What's wrong with expecting people to have a little honor and integrity on the job.

54. Stoopid (who posted earlier) if we did get pictures of the staff as you desire -- the punishment would fit the crime.

If staffers knew that not only would they be fired, but their pictures taken and published by "anyone" in the media?

How did the L.A. Times break the story?

56. 4. Right on. Finally. The shameless violations of HIPPA law must cease. It is not only with celebrities, it is with non-celebrity patients, too. Hospitals and doctors do not respect HIPAA or medical privacy.

Posted at 6:18PM on Mar 14th 2008 by HIPAA must be enforced

RIGHT ON IS RIGHT! This is criminal - and wrong on EVERY LEVEL. If TMZ reports ANY of it - they should be brought up on criminal charges as well...

Posted at 8:20PM on Mar 14th 2008 by TMZ is full of it

57. There is another issue at hand.... Anyone who contacted these people to obtain this information, encouraged the violation of the patients rights, would be deemed a conspirator. If they were acting in a profession manner and encouraged the violation, then the company they work for could be held liable.......... How do other media agencies receive info, they take it off the wire, who ever scooped the story and published it put it on the wire........ You know how snow balls roll down hill, yep, because people are going to start talking.....

Shouldn't the tempter share culpability with whom they tempted to do wrong? It's a matter of relativity.

59. i say let em leak! who cares. I can't wait until it does. Just a matter of time.
