Massive Firing -- You Can't Do Dat to Brit!

UCLA Medical Center is terminating at least 13 staff members and suspending at least six others for looking at the confidential medical records of Britney Spears while she was hospitalized there.

The LA Times reports that in addition to these firings, at least six doctors will face disciplinary action for snooping into her computerized records at the hospital.

According to the Times, UCLA officials admitted this wasn't the first time Spears' privacy had been compromised. Several employees were caught snooping into her records in September 2005 after she gave birth to her first son, Sean Preston, at Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center. A few of those employees were fired as well.

Spears was admitted to the hospital on January 31 -- after being placed on a "5150 hold" when it was determined she posed a danger to herself or others. She was released February 6.

61. Moe -- How do you think all the info leaked out when Brit was in the Hospital, they don't allow little birdies to hang on the drapes or little tale telling mice hiding in the corners.. It was from employees who were paid well for the info they leaked, and no sir, just because the records are there does not mean they are open to the other employees to read, that is a privacy violation. Only, and I repeat Only, the Doctors and Nurses treating that patient are allowed to view those records. And since this is a privacy issue, and that is mandated by the Fed's, guess who might come in to visit with these people.

62. In response to: 4. Kinda hard to have records there and not read them. Gimmee a break.

Unless the records were printed and laying out for the whole world to see (which I doubt), the people who looked either had to call them up on the computer or actually go get the file and look at it. They knew they were doing wrong when they did it. What's wrong with expecting people to have a little honor and integrity on the job.

63. Stoopid (who posted earlier) if we did get pictures of the staff as you desire -- the punishment would fit the crime.

If staffers knew that not only would they be fired, but their pictures taken and published by "anyone" in the media?

How did the L.A. Times break the story?

65. 4. Right on. Finally. The shameless violations of HIPPA law must cease. It is not only with celebrities, it is with non-celebrity patients, too. Hospitals and doctors do not respect HIPAA or medical privacy.

Posted at 6:18PM on Mar 14th 2008 by HIPAA must be enforced

RIGHT ON IS RIGHT! This is criminal - and wrong on EVERY LEVEL. If TMZ reports ANY of it - they should be brought up on criminal charges as well...

Posted at 8:20PM on Mar 14th 2008 by TMZ is full of it

66. There is another issue at hand.... Anyone who contacted these people to obtain this information, encouraged the violation of the patients rights, would be deemed a conspirator. If they were acting in a profession manner and encouraged the violation, then the company they work for could be held liable.......... How do other media agencies receive info, they take it off the wire, who ever scooped the story and published it put it on the wire........ You know how snow balls roll down hill, yep, because people are going to start talking.....

Shouldn't the tempter share culpability with whom they tempted to do wrong? It's a matter of relativity.
