Mel Befriends Britney

TMZ has learned Mel Gibson and his family have very privately befriended Britney Spears to help her through her troubles.

The two were at Romanov Restaurant and Lounge in L.A. last night and according to one report they broke bread together. Our sources say Gibson, his wife Robin and their kids reached out to Britney during her darkest days and began seeing her.

We're told Mel and Robin feel like they know how tough it is to live in a fishbowl and they think they can help the Britster. There have been private dinners in which Mel, Robin and their brood have hooked up with Brit to give her support.

At Romanov's last night, Mel and Brit did not walk in or out together. Looks like Mr. Mel, unlike lots of other celebs, isn't into splashing his good deeds in the media. Nice.

4. He probably wants to help her get back on her feet. He does a better job of helping others than helping himself...case in point: Robert Downey Jr. He gave RDJ a break and a role when no one else would take a chance on him after his last meltdown and he's managed to hold it together since..

Meanwhile, everyonelse else wants a piece of her, to pay for attorneys, fund a business or to just be her parent.
It is nice to know there are still good people out there that have an interest in the person and not the money.

8. dreamer - ARE YOU F**KING KIDDING ME??? Mel is no Mr. Wonderful. His Jew-hating movie only fueled the fire of nutty religious zealots. If you were a Jew you'd know EXACTLY what I mean. But you are most likely a "nice" white Christian who preaches "Jesus loves me!" while you talk about "cheap Jews" behind their backs. Mel, like his father, is a horrible anti-Semite who wants to push his conservative Catholicism sect (which does not even allow women on the altar) by decrying the Jews who crucified his Jesus. Passion plays and movies for decades (if not longer) have made sure that Jews are depicted as slimey, hate-filled back stabbers. Shame on Mel Gibson - he brought his downfall on himself. I hope he is never received by Hollywood again.
