Mel Befriends Britney

TMZ has learned Mel Gibson and his family have very privately befriended Britney Spears to help her through her troubles.

The two were at Romanov Restaurant and Lounge in L.A. last night and according to one report they broke bread together. Our sources say Gibson, his wife Robin and their kids reached out to Britney during her darkest days and began seeing her.

We're told Mel and Robin feel like they know how tough it is to live in a fishbowl and they think they can help the Britster. There have been private dinners in which Mel, Robin and their brood have hooked up with Brit to give her support.

At Romanov's last night, Mel and Brit did not walk in or out together. Looks like Mr. Mel, unlike lots of other celebs, isn't into splashing his good deeds in the media. Nice.

16. First, let me state that I believe that Mel and his family are sincere in their desire to help Britney, aqnd not for any personal gain. I believe he is sincerely guided by his religious, moral, and spiritual beliefs. However, I would hope that his help does not include indoctrinating her with with strong anti-semitic views. As a Jew, I am offended by some of his remarks and attitudes, althougfh I am far from surprised. He only publicly voices what many in our society secretly believe, but avoid publicly stating due to "political correctness" and fear of reprisal. Unfortunately, the acrimony towards the Jewish people is borne of ignorance, as history has proven that, by percentage, Jews have been the most prolific writers, philosophers, scientists, and researchers in the world. That we have been awarded nearly half of the world's Nobel Prizes while comprising less than 5% of the world's population attests to that fact. Sorry, didn't mean to lecture. I've just been seeing a lot of racist activity lately. But this is not the forum for such causes.

20. Unfortunately, you are right. We Jews do include some very hateful, ignorant people. But we don't blindly stand behind them and extoll their virtues. They embarrass us and lessen us as a people, and we do our best to enlighten them.

25. As children, "some of us" were taught............if you can't say anthing nice about someone, say nothing.........Cmon people, how many "nice A list stories" does TMZ ever publish? The TMZ metality is....... if they wont' answer the front door, sneak around back and dig throught their "trash"........... it might be fresh, stale, moldy or down right rotten. It doesn't matter.........throw it to the street and see what gathers............maggots, flies, etc. It is interesting to note that most TMZ responses follow this same pattern. Those swaying from the storyline, finding any bone to pick.......I wonder how many would be so "brave and polished" in front of a microphone.

27. Don't know about Mel Gibson - but I went to Catholic schools in the mid-50s thru 1960s in several different areas of the US. We were taught consistently that 1) Jesus was a Jew and a lot of what he said was based on Jewish tradition, 2) a lot of Catholic ritual was based on Judaism (e.g., vestments etc.; also every Mass had different Old Testament readings every day of the year except the one Mass-less day, Good Saturday, where another ritual was performed), and 3) the Romans killed Jesus, not Jews. Good ol' Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor, tried to pretend otherwise, of course. (Typical politician, looking for a scapegoat for any potentially unpopular decision.) But Palestine was an occupied country at the time and what Rome wanted, happened. Roman soldiers carried out the execution order. Obviously the Catholic Church had forgiven the Romans long ago ... :)

I even survived 4 years at a Catholic college, and one of the courses acceptable for the religious studies requirement was Modern Judaism, taught by a local rabbi.

I have no idea what various flavors of Protestants or non-US Catholics were teaching at the time I was in school and don't know where Mel gets it, but definitely mainstream US Catholics were not teaching hatred of Jews here in the US where I was living during my childhood and teens. So if Catholics of that era and since then picked up antisemitism, it was from the general culture or family and not from church. I dimly recall some weird famous priest (I think he was defrocked, tossed out of the official priesthood) ranting about everybody on some radio show, probably against Jews also. But he was not anywhere near the mainstream, just off in his own muddy little creek somewhere.

28. Mel Gibson thinks he can cure his alcoholism and anti-semitism in the comfort of his own home, using his own ego rather than a Higher Power. This will not help Britney, and only confuse her into wondering why she can't pull it off. And, of course, together, they can both blame the "Jewish media."

29.
what does being jewish have to do with this story about one family reaching out to another??????????? Mel's Passion of the Christ is not biased.........I think most would agree that history dictates that christ was killed by the jews........Not unlike the millions of Jews killed by Hitler, or American Indians slaughtered by the white man, etc..........unfortunately it is reality! Having said that, I am catholic, which is also ridiculed in our very small world. However I too know that the Jews were and are the chosen people of "my god"........I wish them well each and everyday........
