Brit's Lawyers -- Oh the Irony!

So we just read the order forcing Britney to pay $375,000 for K-Daddy's legal bill. Here's what jumped out at us.
Click to read documents!
In the order issued by Commish Scott Gordon, he notes that disso queen Laura Wasser charged Brit $164,972 in legal fees. Remember, Wasser handled the case for 10 months. She's the one who handled the divorce and fought for joint custody and dealt with Brit during the meltdown.

After Wasser quit, Brit hired Trope and Trope to rep her. On Trope's watch, Brit lost custody and visitation. Their bill for five months? $685,985.22 (the 22 cents is a killer). In fairness, Brit's craziness made it impossible for the Commish to do anything but strip her of custody. But seriously, $685,985.22???!!!

So what did Shakespeare say again?

49. Everyone here (including TMZ) seems intimately familiar with the quote about killing all the lawyers. However, have any single one of you actually read the play and is at all aware of the context of the quote? Apparently not. It's two conspirators discussing how to start anarchy. Killing the lawyers is their first step because lawyers are charged with the duty to uphold the legal system and see that justice be done while still zealously advocating for their clients. Get real people and stop using the sound bite without knowing the full context. The quote is supposed to be a good refelction on the profession. That's why THUGS would want all the lawyers dead.

Well, Wendy, I believe domestic relations orders are made according to what the law is, not according to popular vote of tabloid readers.

52. I'm sure that Trope and Trope are overcharging, but a good deal of the responsibility for this also falls on Britney. She blew off court hearings while her Trope and Trope lawyers wasted their time waiting for her, she refused to cooperate with them, and in general, she used them like playthings and treated the whole court thing like a childish game.

And if I'm not mistaken, Wasser gave up on Britney, and it was because of all of Britney's childish antics. This is why an alternate law firm had to be found in the first place. If Britney made a minimal attempt to imitate the behavior of a semi-responsible semi-adult, Wasser would have stayed, charged Britney in the ballpark of only 16.5 grand per month, and Britney probably would have ended up with a much better divorce settlement.

Therefore, the fact that Britney's divorce turned out the way it did can be blamed to a great extent on Britney having driven her _good_ lawyer (Wasser) away.

Also remember that even Trope and Trope were trying to get off the case because of Britney's babyish, uncooperative behavior.

Nonetheless, I think that Trope and Trope should be forced to lower their fees. But at the same time, Britney should not be let off of the hook, and she should definitely pay them for their legitimate efforts and for their time that she wasted. Britney needs to take responsibility for the messes she made, for a change.

And if Britney is too mentally incapacitated to take on this responsibility herself, well, that's what her conservatorship is for. They should to pay to clean up after Britney using _her_ money.

54. To those of you who are talking about the Trope and Trope billing Britney for Kevin's legal fees, you are confused. Trope and Trope were _Britney's_ lawyers. She is the one who hired them to represent _her_ after she drove Wasser away.

Therefore, all of Trope and Trope's billing goes to Britney.

K-Fed's lawyer is named Mark Kaplan, and he's the one that OK Magazine was referring to. There's a different TMZ discussion about Kaplan's billing going to Britney. That's the place for you to be up in arms about Britney paying Kevin's fees, if that's the way you feel.

59. 38. Does anyone know the going hourly rate for attorneys in LA? I'm quessing it's over $1000.00.

Posted at 4:19PM on Mar 17th 2008 by emme

Emme, Britney's attorney, Stacy Phillips, charges an hourly rate of $700. Kaplan's rate at the prior interim application for fees in made in August (and partially granted in November) was $500, but in this latest fee application his rate was $600. Nothing has been reported about the rates of other attorneys or the paralegals in their firms who also work under their supervision on the case.
