40. Well, first of all, Kaplan didn't get everything he asked for. The judge lowered it by something like 25 percent (half a million down to 375K).

And don't act so suprised and indignant, people, because IT WAS PART OF THE DIVORCE SETTLEMENT that Britney would pay for these legal fees. This was reported months ago, and it's totally consistent with the way that lots of divorce settlements are handled, even when the parties aren't celebrities. She was the one with the much larger income, and as was mentioned here already, when that's the case, it's normal in these kinds of cases that the fees are apportioned this way.

Also keep in mind that every time Britney did one of her immature court no-shows, she was still responsible for the legal fees of the lawyers whose time she wasted as they waited fruitlessly for her. Britney treated these people like playthings and the court appearances like a childish game, and I'm glad that she is being forced to take responsibility for her actions (for a change).

Nevertheless, none of this alters the fact that Kaplan is a greedy, self-promoting jerk, and I'm hoping that Britney's current lawyers appeal and get his fees lowered even more.

I'm interested in what will happen with the fees that Trope and Trope are asking for. They are the ones who worked for Britney and who got jerked around the most with her no-shows and her refusal to follow their advice and her childish games with them. And if I'm not mistaken, they have asked for even more than Kaplan was trying to get.

I'm sure that Trope and Trope are inflating their charges as well, and I hope the court cuts down what they will receive. However, also I hope that Britney still has to pay at least something for the irresponsible and babyish way she treated them and for all of their time that she wasted.

It's about time that Britney grows up and takes some responsiblity for her actions, instead of leaving it to others to clean up the trail of destruction that she has left behind her. If Britney herself is not mentally fit to deal with these issues, her estate (as managed by her conservators) still needs to be financially responsible and to use Britney's money to mop up her messes.

And Diane, your info on divorce and custody is about 20 years old. Barring the unfit, Dads who don’t move out (i.e., abandon) keep the STATUS QUO that the kids live with both parents. Courts then strive to maintain this status quo, and dads who petition for it will get joint custody in most Western states. Child support is based on the state Child Support Schedule, available online, which determines each party's expected contribution. The state mandate is far less than it costs to feed, house, school and medically insure the kids unless you live in Apalachia. Visitation orders and parenting plans are very individually determined these days and no longer the cursed tender years favoring of the mom over the deadbeat and abandoning dad. Those are stereotypes. Those very stereotypes are used by deadbeat parents to excuse why they didn’t bother to spend the money to petition for joint custody. It’s easier, when you don’t actually want to parent your children, to blame a court system which is all against you, despite the fact that the argument hasn’t been valid for 20 years. In my state when both parties are working there is no alimony. When mom isn’t working she’s ordered to get a job, regardless of the children at home being infants. So puhlease, stop the 70's stereotyping and all the other caca that makes women evil and men victims. Read your state's child support enforcement schedule and see if you could feed, house, school and provide medical, dental and vision care for (average) 2 children on the paltry support amount your state feels is adequate. It’s actually a boon to the paying parent, not the custodial parent.
